Floriduh strikes again. www.washingtonpost.com/education/2023/08/09/florida-schools-drop-ap-psychology-class/Large school districts across Florida are dropping plans to offer Advanced Placement Psychology, heeding a warning from state officials that the course’s discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity violates state law. Eight of the 11 districts with the largest enrollments in the class are switching to alternate courses, and just one said it will stick with AP Psychology. Two others are still deciding, officials said. The state of Florida has encouraged schools to teach the course without objectionable material about sexual orientation and gender identity. But the College Board, which runs AP, says these topics are central to the study of psychology and cannot simply be excised. Last week, the College Board said the course was “effectively banned” and advised districts not to offer it. Further complicating the matter, a day later, Florida’s education chief told districts that his agency believes the schools can offer the course “in its entirety” but also said it should be “in a manner that is age and developmentally appropriate.” The state has previously said teaching school-age students about sexual orientation and gender is inappropriate.AP classes are taken by HS students, I'm not sure when FL thinks this concept should be introduced

If a student is taking an AP course, it's an option, not a requirement. If parents get their undies in a twist about possible topics, then just have your kid take Florida's dumbed-down version of psych.
<sigh> What a bunch of snowflakes...

Who wants to talk about those icky people. This will have kinds of ramifications. No college credit. You are competing with other applicants who have taken AP courses, so you are less competitive for those "elite" institutions who no longer can consider race, so they may have less of a chance for admission, and have to go to school in Florida. Seems like "owning the libs" may have some negative consequences

But, I don't think we are going back to a manufacturing economy. Education of some type will be necessary. So what are they going to do to ensure that happens. It sure as hell does not appear that they want to pay more taxes to ensure a quality education. Understanding and knowing "real" facts, instead of the made up shit that DeSantis wants to be taught will still matter. I guess it sucks to have dumb parents.

So is the goal for Florida to be populated by only old, cis, hetero, white people?

When FL colleges and universities and U.S. military academies show an acceptance of more non-FL residents than residents, they might take notice.

The people in charge in FL won't care. Out of state students pay higher tuition. Will make their budget better, and the state will have less to subsidize. Hopefully, all those "elites" will go home after graduation. A win all around.

I can only guess that they are trying to make the young-uns so ignorant that they are mocked and ridiculed and very confused if they try to live anywhere else. Maybe after that awful, humiliating experience they will come back and be happy to serve food, change bedpans, and toe the line in terror.

When FL colleges and universities and U.S. military academies show an acceptance of more non-FL residents than residents, they might take notice. Most state universities cap the number of out of state students they'll accept due to agreements with the taxpayers of the state. But, I'm not sure FL colleges are going to get a huge influx of OOS applicants anytime soon.

Same law here. Can't say gay, trans, etc. or discuss anything about gender identity.
Also increased funding to private schools and cut funding to public schools.

Ignorant, ill-educated people are easier to manipulate and control.

Back on again? Florida now says AP Psychology allowed in schoolsFlorida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. sent a letter to superintendents Wednesday making it clear AP Psychology can be offered in its entirety in K-12 public schools. Over the past week, Florida school districts have been switching their course offerings from AP Psychology after the College Board indicated it would not accept the class as taught in Florida, due to the state’s new law that bans discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in most classroom settings. Diaz told schools last week they could offer the class, but it was not clear if educators would be allowed to teach the lessons regarding sexual orientation and gender identity, which the College Board said would need to be in the curriculum for the class to count for college credit. On Wednesday, Diaz sent another letter to make it clear that no part of AP Psychology violates Florida law. “As Commissioner of Education, I tasked my team with reviewing the AP Psychology framework at length. I believe I was clear in my previous letter, but I want to make sure there is no room for misinterpretation,” Diaz said. Complete article here: Florida now says AP Psychology allowed in schools

I'm thinking it was easier for someone to write "K-12 public schools" than 'Senior year of high school'.

I'm thinking it was easier for someone to write "K-12 public schools" than 'Senior year of high school'. You're probably right. But it's fun to picture tiny scholars debating the relative merits of Jungian and Freudian psychoanalysis.

Can someone explain to me in simple english why 16+ year old college track highschool kids can't hear that some people are gay or transgendered? Because they already learned it at the age of ten from their friends and TV. That’s the thing. We’re not living in a little house on the prairie with the ingalls. You don’t even need to go further than the regular TV channels to see gay and trans people. Florida kids are going to self educate pretty early. If they learn stuff at school at least it would be science based.
