Summer magic! The fireflies are here! (They have been here for a few weeks, but I am rarely up long enough to see them).
This is a thread for joyful things.

My dog friends. While, certainly, my people friends are sources of joy, my fuzzy buddies are special. They only love me for the treats I give them, of course, but they do not make any pretense about it. They are there for the treats, but they are willing to tolerate being petted and admired as long as the treats are part of the deal. They are also entertaining and frequently hilarious. Dogs are good.

Summer magic! The fireflies are here! (They have been here for a few weeks, but I am rarely up long enough to see them). This is a thread for joyful things. Last evening I was sitting out front when I noticed a firefly flashing in my lawn. Underneath my chair is a small spotlight which was on. Among the area which the spotlight lite up was where the firefly was on the lawn. I moved my right leg and it cast a dark shadow where the firefly was. When I moved my leg to light up the area where the firefly was, it flashed. Odd coincidence. So I shaded the area by moving my leg again and shaded the firefly's area for a few minutes. No flash back. Moved my leg again to give the area light again and with five seconds, the firefly flashed me. I repeated the action about ten more times and shaded the firefly's area with different amounts of time. But each time I removed my leg and let the light light up the firefly's area, it always flashed me back within five seconds. We were bonding.

I'm loving seeing what's growing in my yard now that I'm not having it mowed. My neighbors probably hate me but I don't care. There are berries growing all over the backyard...strawberries right in the lawn. I throw my veggie refuse out the door and wait to see what grows. Who knows? Maybe a bell pepper or three will make an appearance.

My Dad brought fireflies home then let them loose. So, I go to school in the Fall where the teacher asks what was unique about our summer. I said fireflies. They weren't native to our state so Dad probably got told. The warm sunshine, green grass and smell of rain. The memory of my Grkids baby faces and smiles. Just a few thing I'm grateful for. I have a lot more!

I love this time of the year! Waking up to songbirds singing every morning. And right now, it's after 9 pm, and still not dark outside. It's actually safe to take a walk here until around 9:30 pm for our "peak" weeks of daylight during the Summer.

Warm cookies from the oven
My cuddling cat. His cuddles have nothing to do with food or treats. He would cuddle with me 24/7 if he could.
Soaking in a warm bath
A good book
On a different note, I hate this time of year where I live. We are into triple digit heat already and will be for the next 3 months. Ugh! Not fun!

I have plant hooks on the balcony rail and I was startled (and so was the bird) when one flew on a hook about a foot away, saw me and fluttered right back off. What really surprised me is that moment my brain noted the sound of the fluttering. Shortly after that, I realized there was a pattern to the fluttering that caused me to recognize when I heard the specific fluttering of cardinals between the trees!

We saw a few fireflies in our backyard last night. I was happy to see them since they don’t seem to be as common anymore around here.

I have many memories of watching and catching fireflies when I was little. We moved when I was 8. We were on vacation a few years ago and there were fireflies in the park. I got so excited. My kids were unimpressed 🤨

Around my area it is the mockingbird. I have heard mockingbirds singing at midnight quite often. They are still in the mating game until around the end of July. Then they go to sleep earlier.

I love the killdeer nesting in the empty lot across the street from my house. I love listening to them calling out on nights I have the windows open.

Things I love: Cold (fresh) sheets in summer DS and the peanut's look on their face when they get all zen
DD1's laugh. Thanking about not being able to her her belly laugh just kills me.
The missy is the right amount of little kid softness/pudge
The missy waking me up in the morning because she's snuggling in. Fat folds on babies legs. Knowing better, doing better. Having my hair brushed/stroked. Sock yarn with a bit of sparkle in it.
My irises.

I love being in the "Between" (or maybe it's the transition of one thing to the next): False Dawn - when the sky is brightening but the sun is not yet over the horizon. I rarely am awake at this time of the day. Twilight -when the sky is darkening and the sun has slipped below the horizon. My favorite time to take a walk is just before the sun goes down. The way the light and sky changes. The moments before waking (or just after) the moments before falling asleep (I don't remember the moments after). The moments before something anticipated happens when you are "between", when you arrive and the car is parked and it's time to get out and go on to the next "part" of why you were in the car. The best is when you move through a building (a home or a church or a museum or office building). When you leave the outside and come inside, when you move from a foyer or mudroom or entry way and into the bigger (or smaller) expanse of space that's next. (The best part of DisneyWorld was the transition from "real life" to being in the park... The "between": the winding road into the parking lot, the tram, and then the train OR the ferry to get you into the park and to complete the journey. ) Unity Temple in Oak Park, IL - you enter down stairs and into an enclosed lobby/entry and then go up into the open main part of the building. It's designed to awe and it does. The Luxor hotel in Las Vegas did something like that - you enter thru an enclosed area, get your room key and then move into the big open area at the center of the hotel. The luxor is kind of kitschy but it's still cool. That moment when you are with someone (friend or lover) and everything else stops and you share a moment between - laughing at something that no one else finds funny, or a shared memory that was triggered, or when you "fall in love" again with the other person. FWIW: you can keep "falling in love" with a pet or a friend or a family member or a place. Those are the best betweens. English needs more words for "love". There's lots of other "betweens" in a typical day.
