Good article, as improving teleomeres seem to be in the news lately. Although I expect most will be interested in other parts of the article, this was my duh of course moment - And it's not all about food: participants' activity levels at work were taken into account; they also received a free gym membership as part of the trial, so exercise was a factor too. What's more, past research has uncovered how the good fats of a Mediterranean diet work on a cellular level. But it has also exposed clear discrepancies in who reaps the health benefits of a diet rich in Mediterranean staples. People with well-paying jobs and higher education who could afford to buy lots of fish and whole grains saw greater improvements in cardiovascular health than those on low incomes – even if their adherence to the diet was the same.www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/scientists-witness-patients-brains-de-aging-after-changing-their-diet/ar-AA1cmaHJ?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=fc0f14b11a6e4469972282bc5571eef9&ei=8You can do so much more at a certain income level and above. Sure maybe everyone gets a free gym membership but who actually has the ability and access to use it? Now that I am back FT at work and still without car, I am freaking out on how I will get things done. Sure I am lucky that the bus exists, and I can take it. But it puts a bunch of overhead into my life. Besides wait times of an hour or so a day, I also have walk times of at least 30 minutes a day. I don't have a pass, so I hate getting off to do something and then having to pay a whole nother fare just to get home. So, yet more walking and shlepping. NO wonder the EBT folk using busses do a once a month shop. I prefer to shop weekly, heck more on demand because of the possibilities near me and I save money by buying lettuce here and meat there, etc. But that's been over about 6 weeks. Anyway, I'm stopping as now I only have one delivery day I can choose really for groceries, Sunday, and I should look to see if there is even a slot to grab since its late Saturday.

Many thousands of NJ folks take the bus into Manhattan every week. Does the bus actually cost much more than buying gas, oil changes, car insurance etc? Walking is very good for you probably even better than a gym so try to think positive about this time Having groceries delivered is very helpful and a small positive that’s come out of the miserable Covid experience

Many thousands of NJ folks take the bus into Manhattan every week. Walking is very good for you so try to think positive about this time I know all about commuting into the city. This was a choice thrust on me due to a bad tow. I almost broke down into heaving sobs Friday while waiting for the bus. I had no food with me. I was exhausted. My back hurt, my tendon in my right knee is very inflamed and I had to wait and hope. Because earlier that morning I just missed the bus because it came early, so I had to give up most of my lunch hour because I was in 30+ minutes later than planned. Good thing I still had stuff in our break room freezer or I would have starved for lunch too. I am doing the best I can positivity wise. I almost gave up and sobbed to the depth of my soul because I was so hungry and in so much pain. Walking can be good for you, but not if you collapse before you make your doorway. And that has happened since AAA killed my car.

Walking is very good for you probably even better than a gym so try to think positive about this time Having groceries delivered is very helpful and a small positive that’s come out of the miserable Covid experience Look up how much it costs me to order in groceries. Actually I'll tell you, I'm still paying for car insurance so there is no savings there whatsoever. Thankfully the car is paid for, because that crap does not stop just because the tower disabled my vehicle. I am bleeding money. I barely drive. I get groceries on my way home to minimize drive time and gas. Just one grocery delivery from Shoprite a week is more overhead than what I spend in gas a week. I'm in an apartment so I am not set up for every two weeks or more storing of food. And I have to lug it up stairs and put it in an apartment sized fridge with freezer on top (from the 70s, you should see the DW but I am grateful for the old dying thing.) Shoprite grocery delivery costs - $15 delivery charge with a preselected tip to who delivers of $5. Minimum of $1.50 in reusable shopping bags, so $22 before I even start ordering although since I know the drivers sometimes only get the tip for delivery I beef that up a little if I have water delivered or important frozen things. So I usually tip $7 or $9 even though I am less than 5 miles from the grocery store. I spend a couple hours setting up an order versus going into the damn store and just getting what's available. No cruising for bargains. I have to preselect substitutions and hope they will read the notes. I should just toss it but I still have lite dairy sour cream because someone ignored I wanted non dairy on sale for other things in my order. And the system seizes up and orders things you don't want and sometimes even selects crap you don't want. Still have to call about this last delivery to get corrections. I am grateful there is the option. But I am exhausted just making it day to day. Yeah so I lucked out on the bus, I only spend 6 quarters a day back and forth if I don't have to fit in a blood draw, the drugstore or anything extra. And sometimes worry about who wants to steal off me, because I am not riding with people who commute into NYC for jobs because it makes economic sense. I am riding with people working at restaurants downtown, the hospital, etc. At least two have made moves to rip me off. I am in such pain, I'd lay their asses flat out if they acted on it. Its cheaper for me because I am 63, and I carry only quarters because of the weight of everything I carry.

OK Jerseygirl here's real numbers. My car has been dying so I crunched numbers since I had to record gas costs. I spent $147 over 11 weeks which includes the week before tank fill of $50. (Almost ran out of gas, lucked out when the light turned amber)
So $13.36 a week in gas 1.50 x 6 is only $9 if no extra stops that week, but I still am paying my car insurance and no one is delivering me groceries for $4.50 a week.

Sorry for all the money flying out Opti Your ShopRite is much more expensive than mine. Mine has a $8.95 delivery charge plus the $1.50 bag charge. No tip on bill just what I decide to give driver Driver is great, he brings all the bags into my kitchen Is there another SR by you?

Getting off topic for a moment here Opti but have you been able to figure out what, if anything, AAA will be paying toward the damage of your car? I remember distinctly that you quoted a part of the terms of service where it states that any damage to a car due to towing is NOT paid for by AAA but needs to be addressed with the towing company's insurance. You need to get this sorted out asap as you are spending money insuring a car which never may be driveable again at all. And your health does not seem to be such that you can keep this up long term. You need to get some type of wheels to get you around

Imo, it’s expensive to be poor. I’m not saying you are poor Opti, I’m speaking in general, because your OP reminded me of how I believe that.
When I lived in the ‘hood, there was only once grocery store nearby. To get to another one was at least a 15 minute drive. It was a large chain grocery store, but it was horrible. Dirty, and it smelled bad. And they didn’t sell things like boneless, skinless chicken breasts, not that I would’ve bought them from there if they did.
Fortunately, I had a car and could go to cleaner, nicer grocery stores, but as time went on, I had to drive further and further because the grocery stores on that side of the city were deteriorating, and I’m picky about where I buy my food from. The first one I had been shopping at, one day I went shopping and almost every package of prepackaged deli meat was expired. When I couldn’t find what I was looking for that wasn’t expired, I started looking at other meats out of curiosity, most of it was expired, not just by days, quite a bit had been expired for weeks. I was appalled. I asked an employee to please get a manager for me. I showed him all the expired products on the shelf and told him it was ridiculous, they were going to kill somebody. And I left my shopping cart right there and left, never to return.
That is why, to this day, I ALWAYS look at expiration dates.
At the time, I wondered what people that lived near me and didn’t have cars did to manage. The city has buses, but the system leaves a lot to be desired. It’s not nearly as efficient as in other large cities. And everything is so spread out that you really do need a car to get around. Having access to clean, well stocked grocery stores is one of the things that a lot of people take for granted, but I know it’s not always so simple. Now, the dirty stinky store closed a few years ago, so the people in that area have no choice but to find a way to get to a grocery store miles away from where they live.
Anyway, I went on a tangent, sorry. I understand your frustration though, trying to make things work. I’m sorry you’re having such a difficult time right now. I hope your back and knee stop hurting soon, that you start feeling better physically and mentally, and that everything else works out for you sooner, rather than later.
