i think i am going to buy this book: www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/669716/the-persuaders-by-anand-giridharadas/this guy made a very compelling argument about why Democrats should navigate toward Freedom and steal the mantle away from the GOP, who have been standing on that principle since Reagan. and he makes a very good case for why: that under Trump they have ABDICATED that position. authoritarianism posits the opposite postulate from the Reagan vision of individual autonomy. under Trump, you have to submit to authority because they are the only ones that can protect us from our darkest fears. i think he is right. i think this positioning is brilliant.

"Illuminating . . . Efforts to persuade opponents instead of writing them off are probed in this searching study. . . . This is an incisive guide to the art of persuasion.”—Publishers Weekly
“Persuasion, Giridharadas effectively points out, is necessary for democracy to thrive. He offers strong stories and evidence that polarization and rigid ideology are not the brick walls they’re made out to be. While Giridharadas wrestles with contemporary issues, his inquiry has timeless qualities that transcend the news of the day in the hope of helping strengthen democracy for all time.”—James Pekoll, Booklist (starred review) Sounds good.
