Years ago I stumbled upon a website that dissected the federal budget and listed the wasteful grants. I thought I saved the link but can't find it now. Stuff like money given for studies like what type of mood lighting makes cows give more milk or the proper way to sharpen and hold a pencil.
Anyone help me out?

Probably didn't find exactly what rip was looking for, but not surprising that the Dept of Agriculture might fund studies that increase US GDP and/or increase the food supply. afs.ca.uky.edu/dairy/effects-lighting-manipulation-dairy-cattle-managementPhotoperiod is the duration of daily light exposure. Manipulating photoperiod length can increase milk production in dairy cattle. When manipulating the photoperiod, two common time divisions are used. The first one is a long-day photoperiod, 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark. The second is short-day photoperiod, 8 hours of light and 16 hours of dark. Many studies have shown having different photoperiods for the different stages of a cow’s life cycle improve milk production, reproduction, feed efficiency, and heifer growth. Lactating Cows Cows given long day photoperiod increase milk production up to 10% compared to cows that have natural lighting. Results of a study show that within the first 10 days of the lactation, cows that receive 16 hours of lighting a day produce 3.7 pounds more milk a day than cows under a natural lighting scheme. After 20 days in milk, the difference in milk production between the two groups increases to 6.8 pounds per day. This difference in milk production remains constant until 100 days in milk when the groups switched lighting schemes. After the switching of lighting, 16 hour lighting post switch slowed the decrease in milk production of those cows that originally started with natural lighting.

There should be a study in Iowa on how making people on EBT buy only canned meat instead of fresh meat, no canned beans, only brown rice, etc. will make women and children healthier.

I read about those restrictions. Crazy and probably won't save Iowa money just make the people on the program less healthy.

Conservatives like to make fun of scientific grants they find "wasteful." It is easy to poke fun at some of them. The funny thing about science is that you never know when a new finding can be applied to another field. Happens all the time. Knowledge for knowledge sake is rarely wasteful. Unfortunately, give the anti-intellectual bent or republicans and our country in general, poking fun at the "intellectual elite" seems to be a national pastime

This is aimed at their belief that poor people are poor because it's what they want or deserve. Forget the parents. The kids don't have a choice.

If someone I disgree with does it it's wasteful government spending! FIXED!

I thought of the benefit of the cow study immediately- good for capitalism and for the food supply. I instinctively knew that someone making fun of it hasn’t given it an ounce of thought.
The pencil one - is it like when Jack Donaghy went to work for the government and his department couldn’t afford pens? Maybe just trying to get the most from every pencil. 😛

Hey rip…how about defense spending which is running about equal to the next 9 countries combined. What say we abandon our imperial overreach, chop 50% off that bloated golden goose, and use the money for debt reduction?

What say we abandon our imperial overreach, chop 50% off that bloated golden goose, and use the money for debt reduction? Actually that's really not a bad idea. Something you and I agree on. I could get behind it. Stop being the policemen of the world. Since NATO is really just a toothless tiger, whats the need? Why do we need to have forces in Europe? Isn't there enough NATO countries, 28, there to handle any problems? I hear the UK has one hell of a military ready to go an a moments notice. Just call us when things don't go well. Asia is little different story. With rocket man in N. Korea and China courting other nations with economic help and business, we have to cast a wary eye on them.
