This means that they have no need to toe the party like with regards to impeachment, right? That’ll help.

Depends on their reasoning for not running again.

John McCain had to be dying to defy the party. Jeff Flake spoke out against stuff, and then voted with the party on just about everything, even after he announced his retirement. I don't know the reputation of these guys, or why they are not seeking re-election. Maybe they are going to run on the Q platform for a presidential bid in 2024.

Up until about March 2017, he didn’t always follow the Trump party line. After this date, 100% of his voting did. I wonder if he announced at that time if he was not going up for re-election? Strange. projects.fivethirtyeight.com/congress-trump-score/jeff-flake/

Well, Toomey voted that the impeachment should move forward, and didn't vote that any of the electoral votes should be invalidated. I think that he may actually vote based on the evidence. Not sure about the others.

never mind all that.
this is 8% of the GOP caucus. it is not hard to imagine Democrats holding on to the Senate.

The reason is because Trump would fucking destroy your career if you so much commented negatively on his tie.

If their retirements usher in more of the likes of Josh Hawley, we are in trouble.

From my Toomey letter on the subject... I’ve been cautiously optimistic... (Heck about half the time his form letters aren’t even on the topic I wrote about.)

Saw an article yesterday that all Trump is doing right now is plotting revenge on the 10 republicans who voted to impeach him. A petty, vengeful man with millions in PAC money he is willing to blow just to fuck over someone who pissed him off.

He has as much power as they give him. Frankly they are going to have to give in to the rabid part of their base and become full blown authoritarian, or dismiss that rabid faction and move on. The sooner they do it the better for the party long term... the better for us all long term.

The reason is because Trump would fucking destroy your career if you so much commented negatively on his tie. I suspect it has more to do with going along to get along. The Republicans were in a position to push it's agenda forward and I suspect they thought they had a President (they didn't like) but who they thought they could manipulate. There were also enough of pro trump elected officials at many levels. A single man (or woman) is not powerful - they become powerful when they have people who side with them OR who they can influence to do things (good or bad). It's like a clique in grade school or high school - the kid at the top is only at the top because they have "followers" or "enforcers" - without those they can't accomplish much (they have to ride on someone else's coattails (their parents??) to derive power. trump by himself has no power - even if you comment negatively on his tie. someone who supports trump might destroy you... with or without an ok from trump. I think trump is more a puppet than a power. maybe that's our difference when thinking about trump.

Trump has power. He has the undying affections of tens of millions.
He also has the "ya, but..." admiration of millions more. (Yes, he is gross, but...I got taxes, judges, deregulation, etc.)
He has money. He can advertise. He can go on tour. He can post on You Tube. He can get Parler back online and use that. He can fund raise and campaign for candidates that still support him. He can go on Newsmax and OAN and send out any message he wants (except the smartmatic thing).
He has power.
