why would anyone lie to other members about personal aspects of their life on the board?
this fails the test of logic for me for TWO reasons. first of all, there is nothing that obligates you to reveal ANYTHING about yourself on this board. it is not required by the admins that you give your age, sex, location, occupation, income or anything else about yourselves to them, or to offer them up publicly to the board.
second, this board is anonymous. you don't know much about me other than what I say, so why would I be inclined to lie about myself?
I have said before that I was raised by a hardcore Limbaugh Republican Catholic. strict disciplinarian. because of that, I was that kid that wrote letters to the local paper extoling the value of patriotism, and I was a strong Republican in my youth. when I got to college, I switched to Democrat, but I was never really much of a Democrat. being a strict fiscal conservative, Democratic policies were never that appealing to me. I am staunchly anti-War, but it doesn't come from a left perspective. it comes from the social utility and libertarian perspective. I have explained that many times on the board. I have run many businesses, and none of them have ever failed. I switched to Republican to vote for Ron Paul in the primary, and I switched to "unaffiliated" after Trump won.
every one of those facts listed has been "doubted" by Republicans. I get that y'all are a doubting bunch. hell, some of you even STILL doubt that the coronavirus exists, and that Obama was born in the US (even though as I have pointed out, it doesn't matter if he was born on Mars, he would still be eligible to run for president). but what does it accomplish to question the fact that a certain poster is an MD, for example? I can think of only one thing that does: undermine his or her credibility.
well, let me say this: the only credibility that such questioning undermines is your own. what you are telling us is that EITHER:
a) you are a pack of liars yourselves, and unable to trust anyone else OR b) you have nothing better to fight with than ad-hominem.
either way, it diminishes you in debate. so- why do you do it? isn't easier to just accept what you see in front of you? I honestly don't get it.

I know some who lied on the old msn men's sex and women's sex boards (Where some people came here from when all msn boards were stopped. I knew Laura and a few others who were on those boards and the money board). Ok back to answering your question. Some people wanted to create a persona of knowledge and position. From friendships some of us established via email, talking on the phone and even meeting we were able to vet the fakes. Some were harmless but a few became dangerous. I remember some having trouble at work and in their marriages due to inappropriate actions escaping this anonymous forum. I agree with what you say. Just as in real life, one lie leads to another and eventually you get caught. Without credibility no one will believe what you have to say anymore in a debate. Now having said that, those who know me know my real name is true. Just that I haven't made any movies, don't sing and am still alive.

I think people who lie frequently assume others do too.

Remember when Tina stated that she was being stalked by someone on the old MSN board? That is one reason to "lie".
I do not tell the whole truth on this board and I think my birthday is set here as Jan. 1 (which is a lie).
Although I do assume people here are telling the truth (or what truths they can to be safe).

I don't like lies...so I don't think I have ever lied on this board or any other. I may not tell ALL the truth, but lying just isn't in my nature....some details of some things are just too personal to reveal to strangers here. I only email with one person from these boards...and it's not an everyday thing either.

It's the internet, people pretend to be who they wish they were, or they catfish, or they are Russians seeding fake news across the web or they are just out to troll. I read a while back about people that are dedicated trolls and brag to each other about how much they can disrupt a message board. There are loads of people that lie about who they are on they net.
I tried to have a fake persona once but it was too hard for me. I didn't even like not using my "real" screen name. But that's me.

I LIKE telling the truth on the web, and giving personal information that I might not give in a more one-on-one setting. it is REFRESHING to me to be honest and open about how I think and feel, without feeling any concern about repercussions. I mean, what is the worst you can do? criticize me? call me a liar? I can just say fuck you to that, and I don't have to worry about you hitting me, or shooting me. I LOVE that.
I don't get why anyone would pass that up. seriously.

I don't bother to lie, because
1. It's too hard to keep track of what I told whom and where I said it.
2. I prefer to be known as someone with at least *some* integrity.
For the record, while there aren't many of you I'm friends with either in person or on FB, I'm glad to know all of you. Sorry for all the photo spam earlier, lol.

Sorry folks but I have to lie about myself on the board. If I told the truth about how fabulous I actually am on so many different levels, none of you could stand it.

I think there are different levels of "lying" about one's self online. There's the "lie" to obscure personal information (as in you might say you are blonde and love to wear jimmy choo shoes when you really have black hair and flat feet.) If you have enough knowledge about jimmy choo shoes and maybe about the trials and tribulations of dying one's hair to blonde- you could come across as being what you said you were. On a board like this were looks don't matter - what does it matter if everyone sees you as a blonde with expensive tastes in shoes? Unless you work shoes into every conversation. The easiest to maintain lies are based on truth or about something you are familiar with/know about. On a board like this - giving actual honest answers/opinions to some of the general questions or dilemma or situations may quickly put cracks in a "fake persona" as the person may speak/write in their own voice and not their persona's as it's hard to make up an experience/emotion/what you did in a situation you were never in on the spur of the moment. The thing I find most interesting is the screen names that people choose. Often times a screen name will tell you what kind of person is behind the name. And then there's the weird quirk of human nature where some people "need to win" every conversation. They need to have the last word, or they need derail the conversation (and draw it away from something they cannot intelligently argue about to something they can argue with success) - and the best and easiest way to do that is a personal attack/ad hominem attack. The tool of last resort. When you can't win on your own skill/knowledge/cleverness - a personal attack will get you across the finish line first. We just had 4 years of showing how that works. I do know a few people in real life who I think feel superior when they use a personal attack to derail a debate/argument/conversation. They made their opponent look like a fool when they took the bait. They may even be able to get the opponent to concede that they were right (about the new argument topic introduced by the attack - not about the actual argument topic). I tend to respond to their personal attacks with something like "yeah, and you are fat and ugly. And since you can't defend your position on this - you LOSE. and we're done." I love them, dearly.

Lars had everything going on: an amputated leg due to diabetes, a management job at a hydroelectric plant, a gay son who lived with his boyfriend in an apartment over the garage, a Guatemalan housekeeper who was also the occassional mistress. He lived on the corner of Baxter and Allesondro in the L.A. area. And if I remember correctly the son's boyfriend had sex with the son's sister. The drama! Lars wanted his son to provide sperm so he could have a Swedish woman provide an egg to a Polynesian woman so she could be the surrogate mother. Lars even provided a picture of himself. All was good for about 30 or so months until someone came across the picture of Lars on the internet. Unfortunately, the person in the picture on the internet died ten years earlier. Poof!!! Lars disappeared.

so, since then, I have been more careful. I don't name drop, and am way less specific about work. no trouble since.

Lars the Swede on the old MSN Boards. Quite the story teller and none of it true. sorry, but that is just weird. but for the life of me, I can't quite figure out why. maybe it is like wearing fetishwear. I can't imagine wearing anything that painful. but some people get off on it.
