Canning lids are non-existent in our area. We can get jars, but I don't need those, I just need the lids. Canned pumpkin is also hit and miss. Last week there weren't any cans of pumpkin across two shelves, today there was only the big cans, but not the little cans. I have also noticed that some of the canned soups are hit and miss, one week empty shelves and the next there will be some.

I've heard the canned pumpkin is late this year. Libby said the harvest was late. No hurrying mother nature.

Funny you should mention non-existent canning lids... I wound up canning more jams than I originally anticipated. I'm glad I grabbed fresh liquid pectin back in July when I saw it - I have enough to finish my unexpected amount of canning. I'm down to about 18 lids... and went looking for more - the 3 local hardware stores had nearly empty shelves with a couple of novelty things (weird jars or spice packet) where the canning stuff would normally be. No typical jars, no lids, no nothing. I even tried Walmart and target (and Meijers) not a jar or lid or ring to be found. Amazon had boxes of lids for $12.99. Um, no, they are 3.99 or less in a store. In the past when I needed something (pectin or jars or lids) this late in the season I would usually be able to find what I needed if I visited enough stores. This year - there's nothing to be had. Did everyone take up canning?? Anyway, I've got 3 more batches of jam to make... Some of it is gonna be freezer jam. as I think I'll have more product than I have lids.

I actually made it in to a Container Store... sections of the store were strangely barren AND yet it was filled with people shopping. It was really weird. I didn't find what I was looking for - but didn't really expect to find it. I was hoping the online store was lying to me about avaiilability of what I wanted.
I have noticed that there are more people shopping... I was surprised by how full the parking lots were everywhere I went. It was the weekend though - so maybe everyone is back to work Monday thru Friday?
I have to admit, I'm tending to think further ahead and buy stuff (on my I'm gonna need x eventually list) when I see it. Kind of like the liquid pectin - I knew I was canning this year and normally I wouldn't buy it in July (cause it's often closer to it's "good by date" than the stuff that will hit the selves in August) but I'm glad I checked the dates and bought it when I saw it.

Me too. We were at Costco this weekend, and before the pandemic it was a zoo on weekends. The border shutting down has cut customers by at least 2/3 (according to the guys at the gas bar). So this has made shopping in Costco during the weekend feasible. I think I am going back to either my weekday trips, or evening ones if TD leaves work early.
