Made walnut, raisin, banana bread last night using up a couple of over ripe bananas. The walnuts were from my own black walnut trees. Now that I have tasted them, I am a little less apt to complain about the extra work and mess in the fall! Had a lemon poppy seed muffin for breakfast, which was one of three that I brought home from work Saturday morning. Whipped up a batch of Spanish vegetable soup. I think it ended up with more of an Indian flare in the end, but sooo good and satisfying on this blustery snowy day.

I ate breakfast at home, and not at the "oh, so good and worth the price", breakfast buffet. I would have felt inclined to pay to treat grandkids so I save a bundle. I love you but I can scamble eggs and make pancakes as good as theirs if not better.
I'm off the make a spinach/ mushroom quiche.

Last week I bought a roast that was marked down because it was close to it's sell by date. I think I paid $6.50, can't remember how many lbs it was. I cooked that sucker up in the crock pot and got 3 dinners a piece out of it for myself and my finance. Then, I took what was left and made a beef pot pie. I inadvertently made too much pot pie filling and didn't want to throw it away. Being the smart spender that I am, I added the left over broth and some more veggies and made a soup! So the pot pie made 2 dinners for each of us and the soup made us each dinner and 2 lunches for me. That's 10 meals out of one roast and all of the delicious broth that the crock pot gave me! Man I love my crock pot and marked down meat!

I finally cleaned my living room area rug. I borrowed a friends carpet cleaner so it just cost me a bit of the cleaning solution. I was also a good girl and did take out coffee from home.

On Saturday I used a coupon for a hair salon, so, a very discounted haircut. Got about 6" cut off. I noticed I now use less shampoo and conditioner. My stockpile is going to last me a whole lot longer. And blow drying now takes half the time. So, saving money on shampoo and conditioner and electric.

I saved about $12.97 a month. I recently purchased some YakTrax (they go over your shoes so you don't slip on the ice) from footsmart.com. On the receipt it gave a website to get your shipping charges refunded. The site www.claimyourrebate.com gave the information to begin on its site which also gives you free shipping on other sites, low cost movie tickets, and other deals but it said nothing about cost. Before giving them my credit card I read the terms of agreement and in there it said it would be a monthly $12.97 charge on your credit card after the first free month but none of this information was under FAQ's. Glad I read the terms! I backed out of the website so fast!

Merryheart--I love you "call sign"--what a cheery name! Waffle--who did the flowers? Very nice! I stayed in bed past breakfast so will start the day with lunch! Does that count as saving money? (had a headache that started at 4:30--not much sleep after that) Gosh it's cold here in Montana and we just returned from two weeks in Cancun. I guess one pays for every bit of pleasure, eh? We've found that by renting a two-bedroom, two-bath time share with full kitchen (dishwasher included) dining area, living room, and big balconies we can economize by eating breakfast and lunch in (except when on excursions and it's included) and eating half of the dinners out (bringing home leftovers--the portions are really large) with the other half in. Cancun City has a Wal-mart, Sam's Club and Costco--what a hoot! Some like the all inclusive, but we like the additional space and to try restaurants up and down the hotel zone.
What have you others done to enjoy a snazzy vacation and still "try" to save while doing it?

Thanks. I took a picture of the center of an old vintage floral hanky. I posted it to photobucket, so I could use it here as an avatar.

One of my clerks has a birthday today (actually, two of them have birthdays today!) and his GF sent him a cookie bouquet. He offered cookies and I longingly declined and then ate my orange. Didn't save me money but did improve my life!

I went to the Real Deal $ store and bought 10 16 oz cartons of heavy whipping cream. (2/1.00) I'll get about 9 lbs of butter out of it. A savings in my area of about 25.00. I started making butter out of it today. It takes a while, but well worth it. Yummy.
I also found garden veggie seeds for 6/1.00 and bought 5.00 worth. Most of them were heirloom varieties. So I am in my glory today.
This one is hard to believe. DS works in a restaurant as the cook (he said it takes years to be called chef). There were some fresh veggies left from a party. Under these circumstances the staff can take home the left over food. Patrons can not take food from the restaurant with a banquet or party. And the restaurant can't use the food for making an additional profit. (This info is for anyone who doesn't understand the rules and laws.) No one wanted the veggies. So we have a load of fresh broccoli, peppers, cauliflower, and carrots. I gave 1/2 to a neighbor and we are dipping the others in blue cheese dip.

bobbysgirl, I have a question: do you use your hand mixer, blender, Cuisinart, etc. to make butter? Or do you do it by hand?
I've tried once with the blender, and results were so-so.

bobbysgirl: When I have made butter, I have molded in 1 cup measuring cups and frozen that equals a stick of store-bought butter. For a special treat, I have added chives and/or roasted garlic and molded in a measuring tablespoon and frozen...WONDERFUL on baked potatoes, chicken, or beef. Idea for veggies: toss in a little olive oil, salt, pepper and/or garlic/herbs and layout on a jelly roll pan and roast in the oven...YUMMMMM! You could also melt a bit of that butter with or without the olive oil and add the S&P and/or herbs...sometimes I sprinkle with Parm Cheese too. Use those peppers for fajitas or chicken chow mein or stir fry too!

Got my Angel Food order-shouldn't have to buy meat or chicken for the next month. I also got 3 cans of salmon at Walgreen's yesterday for $1.91 a can-one of my favorites to have for salmon patties.

I exercised at home to a DVD that has long paid its price. Also made pizza from scratch. It's a lot cheaper than eating out or even ordering one and I can have all the toppings I want (I went with veggies mostly).

I'm also interested in what anyone else does. I made a post a week ago or so in the "travel" sub-board over on EE notmsnmoney.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=travel&action=display&thread=3712 about handy little travel tips, really looking forward to any and all input. I posted a few of my own tricks over there--I love to travel but love to save money and be creative about it--new ideas are fun to read! Bobbysgirl--I'd also like to know how you make your butter. I don't know if I use enough to make it worth it, but it would be fun to try

I learned to make Bread from scratch sans a bread machine (because we don't own one.)
I'm never buying bread again for the rest of my life.

I poured the coffee from my drip coffee maker into a thermos. The coffee maker draws as much or more electricty than my electric dryer.
I have used two electric space heaters. One in the basement to keep the heat ducts warm and the other in the cold living room corner. I have saved about $200 per winter month over using my wood fireplace. That figures in $100 per cord of wood, which is a low figure now for wood delivered.

Way to go Waffle! I'm sure you will get the $6900.00 paid off in NO time. I did what everyone else does, (I think) grocery shopped the sales items using coupons to cut the costs further. The items I purchased I needed, but also stockpiled a little.. . Also did dinner menu planning using many of the items that we have in the pantry. I did use a coupon for an eye exam and a free set of glasses. I was due for an exam, my eyes did improve (YES!) and I'm feeling kind of good about all of this. I really like seeing what you do. (no pun intended) It keeps me motivated. Thanks.

I took a 14K gold chain necklace, mangled by what I imagine was a car tire decades ago, that my mom bequeathed me twelve years ago to the local coin shop and sold it for $760 USD.

I have to buck the trend here because I saved nothing today but some of my sanity. I have been really stressed over work and decided it was time to take a day trip and spend time with my wonderful Mom. We went out for lunch at an Indian restaurant, a first for her and she really enjoyed it, as did I. We then commenced to browse some other food shops and bought just a few inexpensive things to lift our spirits. We are both very frugal, and sometimes you just have to spend an extra $20 and treat yourself. If she were on this board I'd give her some karma just for being the wonderful person she is every day of the year!

I just found this thread. I love it!
It's too early to add anything for today, but yesterday I went to my Weight Watchers meeting and was 0.4 pounds up. I decided I didn't deserve my usual reward, breakfast at the restaurant a few doors down. I put the $10 saved into my saving/coin bucket. Went to the grocery store, thought it would be nice to have a bottle of wine for last night. Decided to save the $10 instead. $10 more went into the bucket.
This didn't save money but it did improve my life: I gave away some freezer burned meat to someone who has a dog on a homemade diet. I hated seeing that in my freezer all the time, knowing I spent good money on it and would not be eating it. I organized my freezer which is now filled with food I WILL eat. It definitely gave me a nice mental boost.
