Treasury sent nearly $1.4B in stimulus payments to dead people: reportThe Treasury Department and IRS sent almost 1.1 million coronavirus stimulus payments, totaling almost $1.4 billion, to dead people as of April 30, a Government Accountability Office (GAO) paper released Thursday reported. "Treasury and IRS did not use the death records to stop payments to deceased individuals for the first three batches of payments because of the legal interpretation under which IRS was operating," GAO said. The watchdog was provided the figure about the number and dollar amount of payments sent to dead people by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. The payments sent to deceased individuals are small when compared to the overall number of payments made. Treasury and the IRS have distributed about 160 million payments totaling nearly $270 billion as of May 31, according to the GAO report. And now some satire from The Onion about those checks. Heaven Flush With Cash After Trump Administration Sends $1.4 Billion In Stimulus To Dead AmericansTHE HEAVENS—Expressing their excitement over the unexpected windfall, heavenly sources confirmed Thursday that eternal paradise was flush with cash after the Trump administration sent $1.4 billion in stimulus funds to dead Americans. “I felt a little guilty about spending my check because I didn’t really need the money, but I’ll admit, it’s been nice to go out to eat more and finish up a few DIY projects I’ve been working on around the firmament,” said the departed soul of Henry Davies, telling reporters that the sizable cash infusion had helped buoy the flagging tourism industry for popular afterworld spots like Valhalla and the River Lethe. “It’s nice to see people out and about in the Kingdom of God spending freely, and we’re expecting a second round of stimulus checks soon as well as a massive influx of deceased Americans, so the economy should be booming for the foreseeable future. It’s a great time to be dead!” Davies went on to admit some frustration that the $1,200 per person didn’t come close to the massive corporate giveaway Congress had approved for businesses based in Hell. I finally called the IRS last week to ask about my stimulus check. I was on hold for 1½ hours before I talked to a person. I haven't filed for 2019 since I'll pay in. For 2018 I filed a joint return as surviving spouse - my sweetie passed away in April 2018. I was basically told to wait until I file my 2019 return. And, as a single person for 2019, I won't qualify for the stimulus. But they'll send checks to dead people. It's a good thing I don't need the money.

I do estate work. I've returned multiple stimulus checks for dead people.
I don't understand why they couldn't cross check the list with social security list.

Because that would be hard, and display a level of competence that they do not have. The more incompetent they are, the more they prove that they are right that government is the problem.

Yep, my Mom got one, or I did, as she died at the beginning of the year. Social Security knew it immediately. The administration? Obviously, not so much.
