Granted I have the right to own a gun but I do not have the skills necessary to safely and effectively maintain and use a gun. I think possessing those skills is where the obligation of gun ownership exists.

I looked through the book of jobs offered by the Navy and the only skill I saw them teaching me that would help me in my future was typing, I was a Cracker Jack secretary, not a gun toting soldier.

Took two years of typing in high school: manual and electric. I learned early in adult life those were probably the best two classes/subjects I ever learned. I have been using a keyboard for work and home use for almost 50 years now. To paraphrase an old quote: 'The keyboard is mightier than the sword.'

When I was in a wheelchair for that year, going to the range and target shoot was about the only activity that I could do sitting on my butt. I also had about 40 hours of class time. That includes the laws and practical, safe use of guns. As far as I am concerned, this course should be a requirement.

My son retired from the Navy after 20+ yrs...he never touched a personal weapon during his time in...he did in civilian life or when he was on leave at home, but not for military purposes. He did touch mounted weapons on his salvage boat from time to time.

We know how to use them safely and how to take each apart & clean it. We also taught our grandkids how to shoot each of our guns and take them apart & clean them. Not all of our weapons are locked up because they would do us no good to protect our lives if someone broke in here...and this happens from time to time out here in our rural area. Doors have been kicked in with residents sleeping and during daylight hours too...we are loaded & locked, but ready. I notice an article earlier this morning that in many areas gun & ammo sales are up due to the protests. I'm more worried about government than I am about protesters.

""Discharging a full automatic weapon on a ship is definitely not a good idea. Therefore, during Navy basic training, you won't get to fire the M-16 rifle. Instead, you qualify with the M-9 pistol and the Mossberg 500 shotgun."""

Four years active and 22 years Naval Air Reserves. Never touched a gun, even on watches. Did have target practice during Army ROTC in college though.

Really, you are going to outshoot, outman the military? Wouldn't it be great if all the protesters had guns. Guns make everything better.

This is where the militia delusion of the second amendment really comes to the full light of day. Maybe back in the day when when all guns were created equal, but in modern times the US military could decimate a civilian resistance.
As much as I loathe the current regime, I'm not going to join an armed rebellion any time soon.

Personally, I don't see it as an "organized" resistance...more like a hit & run so harder for any military to get you...but now with the drones...not real sure about that either. But I'm not so sure the military would turn on citizens...at least not all of them. Could be a really messy civil war like in some other countries.

I was thinking that the NRA must be loving this. It has to be the best membership drive they've ever had.

The skill you learned kept you safe. The pinky finger on my right hand is a bit more muscular than the pinky finger on my left hand after hitting the enter key so many times in my life.

My problem with the old manuals was moving it when I slung the carriage back to start the next line. Had several close calls with nearly slinging it off the desk.

I meant more the resistance that any level of personal fire arms could make a dent against military weapons and organization.
Based on how the police are treating protestors, I have little doubt that the military would turn on citizens.

"Back in the day" the 2nd Amendment was about a (well regulated) militia having guns and there wasn't a US military, aka a standing army, from whom citizens needed to protect themselves.
