Ok, I'm in! I'm 5'-11", and 146 as of this morning. My lovehandles are making muffin tops on all my pants. I'd like to get to 140 and maybe 135 by the end of summer. Last summer you all helped me A LOT to be accountable and reach my goal. Unfortnately over the winter I gained half of it back. I did ok until Halloween, then there was one weekend where the stress compounded and I eventually tumbled back into gaining. Short-term: 1 lb a week, I did this last summer and it worked good. i don't look at the big picture, just getting from 147 to 146 by next Tuesday. Long-term: My mother was very heavy and it scares me. I'd like to maintian a healthy weight thru out my life. Which means losing when I go up and learning to maintain as I age. Plan: I weigh myself every Tuesday morning. I made an exception today just for WIR. I try to mix activity into my day. I figure any type of calorie burning helps, from standing while on the phone at my desk to doing heal lifts while I sit, to parking way at the end when I shop. I will try to choose healthy snacks when munching, and no going back for seconds at dinner (i'm not hungry it just tastes so good), and no eating when I get home from work after 9pm. Exercise: I don't exercise regulary, and my schedule is...well it matches my life, crazy. DF is trying to help me, so he walked with me around our yard Tuesday night, within 5 minutes he was shaking uncontrolably, so I need to find another way to move in the evenings that I'm home that balances spending time with him, the kids, and both of our needs. I hope you all help as much this summer as you did last year. Happycat, this is a toast of my unsweetend tea (DF makes it for me) just for you. Really I just took a gulp for you. I understand your vices, mine are similar. I've gone back to unsweetend tea to hydrate (and forced myself to like it). Someday I'll try to quit the soda all together. Maybe then I'll learn zumba (like Chicg) and use that as my vice. No promises, we'll see how the summer goes, one thing at a time. Thanks for all your help ladies, both with debt and weight!

CrazyLady: I will have the glass of unsweetened tea with you! I don't mind the taste of unsweet tea and can even drink it with no sweetner. If I have unsweet tea I don't even count it. Well, my trainer canceled again. It's ok. We were trying to work me into her school/work schedule with not much notice and it just didn't work out for her this week. So, I won't see her til next Thursday which is fine. It gives me more time to lose a few pounds. I ordered lunch in because I am trying to get stuff done before the weekend hits. I don't want to take anything home so I can concentrate on studying. I did order a coke for lunch (regular size). One in three days is not bad and I'm not striving for perfection...just improvement. Have a nice weekend ladies. I hope the nice weather burns off an extra pound!!

CrazyLady: Wasn't your DF serverly injured in a major accident? Is the shaking as a result of that?? How is he doing?

WIBeth: He had a brain injury and his brain doesn't always control his body temp. When his brain works too hard, such as paying attention to his surroundings, it can't handle body temp too. If his temp drops too much he starts shaking, then, well, long story. I was really hoping summer walks would be easy exercise for us both. Maybe he can only walk when it's 98.6 outside, yuk! It was 60, we can try again when it's in the 70's, and try some other things to reduce brain stimulation. Yeah, we'll see, maybe I'll just walk by myself.

I'm sorry, that must be hard for you both. I hope he can recover more from his injury.
What happens if he bundles up? Or walks somewhere boring so there's no stimulation? Does that help any?

HappyCat: Yeah, it's a result of the accident. He's doing ok, it'll be 2 years next month. He still needs 2 naps a day to function and even then has VERY little short term memory especially by the end of the day. We are adjusting to him being home all the time and he's trying really hard, which makes it so much easier for me to handle.
WIBeth: Bundling up helps slow the drop in his temp, but once it starts you have to reduce the brain stimulation to a level that it will start controlling his temp again. Walking somewhere boring would be great, I don't know where that would be. He has learned that a hat, dark sunglasses, and ear plugs help cut down on stimulation when he's out and about. I've gotten him into stores, I haven't given up on going for walks yet. If I can exercise and spend time with him, I'll be sooooo happy. ;D

I was wondering if a walking track in a gym during non-busy hours would work (I've always found that to be boring...) It's a bummer that it couldn't be neighborhood walks though. Or maybe walks after dusk?

I am waiting to see how badly I get injured climbing on this roof this weekend... I just have fears of waking up in the hospital in a body cast. I guess I should be happy I am not still a kid growing up in a town where everyone was a member of the fire dept and my boyfriend would probably be the one pulling pieces of roof of op of me- even if I did weigh 75 pounds back then. I just have a bad feeling about this. At least my tetanus shot is current.
Weight is still holding steady, so I am not complaining, but I am really hoping for a loss soon.
crazylady- I admire you. Not everyone has that kind of fortitude.

Hopped on the scale this morning, 154.7. I am trying to stick with portion control. I have been eating half to 2/3 of my regular portion sizes. Every time I look at what's left on the plate I can hear my mom lecturing. "Clean your plate. There are kids starving in etheopia." I have been working on my yoga dvds. I felt pretty good after a workout the other day. When I got up the next morning I couldn't bend down to tie my shoes. If it hurts it must be working.

Just ordered the Zumba collection from Amazon. I think it's the same as what's on the informercial...comes w/4 DVDs w/6 workouts and the "shaker sticks." The website showed 7 workouts...guess I'm getting the essentials. AND it was $40 bucks cheaper on Amazon w/free shipping.
Hard as it's going to avoid the temptation, I'm going to stop weighing myself and start going by my measurements. The scale hasn't budged in the past 2 weeks, but I'm almost in a smaller size. Just wish more of it was in my waist instead of my hips/butt...I actually don't mind those.

I am down to 191.8 now and only stepped through the roof 6 times yesterday. Unfortunately today I hurt so bad I can barely move. Can't wait to have this done. I would much rather do regular workouts.

Hey all - heard a really interesting podcast last night I thought I would share. This guy (Gary Taubes) is a science journalist who just wrote a book called "Why we get fat". It's not a diet book, it's a book on the biology of obesity, but its practical applications were pretty clear. Hearing him speak about it was really interesting, breaking down the body's reaction to different foods. To sum up his conclusions: Sugar bad, carbs mostly bad, even FRUIT can be bad, but high protein high fat are good. Even for your cholesterol. There's a bunch of biology behind it, and it seems pretty solid. I never bought into Atkins, but I am starting to rethink that. I don't know what this means for me yet (I'm a vegetarian, so a majority of my diet is carbohydrates and I don't eat meat for moral reasons, so not changing that.) But it is definitely getting me thinking about at least 1) minimizing sugar in my diet, 2) minimizing white flour (bread and *gulp* pasta). However, if I get to reintroduce real sour cream and butter into my diet it might be worth it. Just some food for thought on a Monday morning. (Sorry, couldn't resist). *Edited for spelling.

In other news, the weekend got me again. I did good workouts both days, but may have accidentally made and eaten an entire batch of cookies on Sat night. Scale back up to 167. *Sigh*

I'm currently not working out on the weekends. I'll eventually add in a bowflex session on weekends but for now, not yet. I was 185 this morning. I think I'm going to weigh in on Monday mornings.
the thing with using whole grains/different grains instead of white flour is the taste, at least for me. After eating DH's gluten free pancakes (it's a mix), it's BORING to go back to eat white flour pancakes. And while I don't like the brown rice pasta, I do prefer whole grain/spinach pasta so that's what I and the kids will be eating once we eat the rest of the other stuff.

Still debating on what day to make my weigh in. I currently weigh every other morning but I think I will be better off if I just weigh myself once a week. On a plus note this is the first weekend in a long time that I feel that I did not overindulge and I was even able to run around the yard for about an hour with DS on Saturday until he got too cold. This week I am working on portion control and making healthier choices. So far so good but it is only 10:30 on Monday morning

Wholewheat pastas have come a long way within the past 5 years (when I bought them initially I had to force myself to eat it) but now they are really tasting much better than the regular pasta. I like them in organic marinara though instead of the regular pasta sauce. It somehow brings out the best of both flavors.

bsb- I am very suspicious of high protein, high fat diets unless they are very specific in their approaches. Where the science behind a vegetarian diet is very solid, high protein and high carb diets have often been tilted to benefit one group or another or have not been designed for long term use- yet that point has been glossed over. I myself am moving towards a flexitarian diet- for health and financial reasons- but also things I am finding out through some reading I am doing.
Can't wait until we are done at my grandmother's- I think my hair hurts...
I tried doing sun salutations this morning and ended up downward facing bear...

I was bad this weekend. Didn't really eat too much, but drank A LOT on Friday night and then was pretty much useless on Saturday. I drank most of a half gallon of chocolate Silk. So dehydrated.
I'm with you mizbear on the Wednesday weigh ins. This morning's number was not pretty. I did jog/walk on the treadmill last night for 45 minutes though. Yoga tonight. I need start my Jillian Michaels dvds again.

I've always been suspicious as well, which is why I was focusing on the biology of what he was talking about. I will be reading the book for myself, but a lot of what he is saying makes a huge amount of sense, biologically and evolutionarily.

I am very proud of myself so far- even if my DB did show up with chik-fil-a for lunch. I had a Zone bar for breakfast, a basic chik-fil-a sammy and fries for lunch (I dipped the fries in ketchup and put a teaspoon of chipoltle mayo on the sammy) and am making whole wheat pasta with veggies for dinner.
bsb- Let me know what you think of the book.

bschool - I can't wait to listen to that podcast. I agree with you about high protein/high fat diets making sense. Obviously not too much saturated fat or fried foods but I did a lot of research into atkins before trying it years ago and it made sense to ME, so I tried it. My body really agreed with that way of eating, I lost weight and my bloodwork was great (I was also working out so it wasn't just diet.) THe only reason I haven't gone back to it is I'm trying to eat more vegetarian and I can only focus on so many changes at once, but I'm starting to think my health and losing weight might be more important right now then my moral reasons for wanting to go more vegetarian. All the girls at my gym studio that have been losing said they eat pretty low carb (in addition to zumba!)
Sugar - I haven't eaten "white" pastas and rices in years. They actually taste weird to me now, chewy and gummy, unless I'm at a great restaurant with home made pasta. I think whole wheat pasta has more flavor, especially since I prefer to eat pasta with just pesto or olive oil or an egg versus red sauce (my fav is to whip an egg with a little milk/cream and good cheese and mix it into the pasta while still hot. Add sauteed/roasted asparagus and top with cheese, yum, and if you use an egg, you're adding in protein which is good to do with a carb-heavy meal). Aldi's light and fit line is actually decent for the price but I've found others with a lot more fiber. I still prefer white rice to brown but oh well, I don't eat enough to miss it that much.
I've been out of town for a funeral, eating has been so-so. Eating out more but trying to watch portions and no snacking. We'll see how I do, by the way my clothes fit, I'm guessing I'm breaking even. Not bad considering I've missed 6 of my regular workout classes.

I am definitely going to cut down on sugar, move to no sugar added foods. Carbs are going to be tougher, but I figure more lentils and beans, less rice, bread and pasta (even though I eat brown rice, brown bread, and brown pasta) is the way to go. Even if I'm not following the low-carb diet strictly, it still cuts down on huge amounts of carbs in my diet. In the interest of making this money-related, we will finish what we have first before buying anything new. And I will finish reading that book!
