You might just need a vacation to recharge your battery. Then you can go full throttle. Might I suggest some beach time, and tequila?

Yeah, I'm also wondering if some time off in a nice locale would get the juices flowing again. Sometimes you just gotta step away for a bit.

So what do you get if you get this other job? More travel? Earlier retirement? More power to stick it to asshats? No travel. Retirement. Health insurance. Steady paycheck. Lots of power to stick it to asshats. so - you'd be giving up your solo practice?

Are you maybe not sure you want the changes this would bring? I used to be sure I wanted it. Now I’m not so sure I do. I like not answering to anyone amd picking what I WANT to do. But financially it’s the right thing to do.

At this point in life I’ll give up a lot before my flexibility... have you talked to the family about life under both options? Are you the only one giving things up in the deal?

Run for state government. That should shake things up. Better yet, sign up for some work on the Donald Trump re-election campaign. That will get your mojo back

That's what you said the perks were. I'm not on facebook and whatever, so I think some more words are needed as to why retirement, health insurance and a steady paycheck are needs at this point of your life.. I thought you were on track for retirement. You guys were doing well, I thought in a low COL...I would assume you can afford private health insurance. But, I'm assuming private insurance won't eat up like 50K a year of someone's income.
You are smart enough to figure out how to deal with income hills and valleys....Shit, I can do that, and I have a music degree.
So, does it really come down to power?

Then the focus probably needs to be on the benefits, not necessarily the job... if that makes any sense. Don’t get excited for the job... get excited for retirement... Woot! (And the job stuff is just the means).
That helped ... right? 😜

It’s also very high deductibles and basically only catastrophic coverage.

S steady pension in retirement is nice. I don’t need it. DH and I have $1.5 million in retirement accounts. I want it. Health insurance would give DH more job flexibility. One of his co workers is toxic. Ive got the fluctuations down. I have a steady draw and have enough reserves to cover expenses. I can also get LOC no problem. I’ve never run a deficit or not been able to cover expenses since I opened in 2014, but that fear is always there.

I just saw this its in the wrong thread.
I keep telling hubs he is underestimating the value of our houses. A flipper bought one down the street from us, need a roof, had mold in it. I'm not sure what all they did, I think new furnace, roof, painting, hope more. It was $17 to $20k I think, but more work then we could handle at this time. The thing was just listed for $99,500. I told hubs ours would go for about $69, he laughed at me and said $45k. He has no idea, a tiny one further down went for around $60 I believe. He just sees how bad they look in the beginning. I have always sold our houses for way more then he would have. The street has a lot of houses in poor repair but nice ones too. One was torn down in blight conditions by the city. Now we have 3 and another on the street fixed up of late. I know of another to be torn down. As it goes toward town, its 3 blocks away it gets even better. There are other houses in town being fixed up, a good sign.0
We probably should list the thing, but to be seen.

Try being retired and trying to keep motivated.
It's 1PM and I have not done much. Went down to get meat for dinner and always take something with me to the basement or bring it up each trip. Had 3 canning jars and broke one in the food pantry. That of course motivated me to clean it up then fill the softener. Just a useless tidbit and my boring world.
But I am having a very very hard time being productive. I love to sew and haven't done much in a few years, not sure why, hubs built me out a beautiful, functional sewing room and instead I'm reading. Right now need to catch reports up, take the Xmas decorations down. And I'm so frustrated by not being able to get MIL's stuff fixed.
I would like to go for a drive its beautiful out. Instead I'm going to work on reports for DIL and MIL, sigh.
I think that is what keeps hubs going is having a project. If he wants to buy more houses think I will just let him, like he said just not in such bad shape as this one was. He is over working today, think it gives him something to get up and feel useful about. Not sure what would happen with him if he just stopped.
So yes, its harder for me. Now I would have been planning a motorhome trip. Instead nothing. DD and I may plan a car trip anyway. As hubs said for the costs of maintaining and running it we could take lots of trips, think he is right, just got in a rut. But now have a walking problem, sooo, not sure.

I was playing tennis with 2 friends. We needed a 4th person. One of the older men was waiting for his group. When he joined in, our tennis playing perked up considerably.
I doubt having a new playing partner would work in your situation.

Or how many years had you planned on continuing to work? Is there a point where one or both of you could scale back? That might come with lower insurance costs and some financial aid for the swamp jr 1 and 2 college years....Could that be an option?

Look around more. I'm paying about $400/month for myself and 2 kids with a $2,500 deductible. It's part of the exchange. Their client support number is 877-687-0779. Co pays are $40

Swamp, are you suffering from a lack of challenge in your career?
Seems like your work life has been a series of challenges. The District Attorney’s Office, a shift to learning the private practice world, then going out on your own and building a successful business.
Now, you appear to be finding your legal work is mostly routine things that you have done before. Several times.
I suspect that you are motivated by obstacles to overcome.
If my guess is on track, how can you introduce enough challenge into your work to keep you motivated? Maybe you could engineer your practice around being a training ground for new lawyers. They handle the routine procedural stuff while you provide the mentoring for a year or two after they pass the bar. Or, you select a specialty to pursue that allows you to become the recognized expert, writing articles, making educational presentations, and the like. Or, make legal consulting a part of your practice (what kinds of consultants do attorneys use).

I've got to think about how to make changes to challenge me if this promotion/job change doesn't pan out. I'm not exactly in major population center, so mentoring new attorneys is tough. I do think I will expand my practice though. Hire another secretary, maybe 2, and an associate, and then see where that goes. I also need to get a different office, I have run out of space.

The little swamps will not be getting financial aid unless it's merit based, even if one of us went part time. But it is an option. DH would go part time in a heartbeat if he could.
