Tonight I was getting ready to cook dinner and realized I needed some milk. I jumped in my car and went up to the corner market. As I pulled in there was a young man, early 20's, outside of his car on the phone. His car, to be polite, was a POS. Dented, cracked glass and peeling paint. I went inside and got my milk and went to my car. It was windy and when I went to open my car door the wind assisted me in opening it.
My door bumped the young mans passenger side mirror. I got in my car and then I heard the man yelling at me. I looked over and he was rather irate that I bumped his car. I rolled down my window and apologized. I said the wind pulled the door and it just hit his mirror. He said "old man, you better be careful" as he started to walk over to my car ranting.
Apparently someone called 911 for some reason. Surprisingly, 2 police cars arrived rather quickly. The young man went back to his car. One officer came to me and did the usual routine of asking for my ID. Fortune smiled on me as I recognized him and he recognized me. Years back, he had been dating my ex-wife's friend and our group of friends socialized together. He went and ran my name and of course came back clean as newly fallen snow. The other officer went to talk to the young man.
And this is where it went down hill rather fast for him. When they asked for driver license he didn't have it but the other officer recognized him apparently from earlier run ins with the police. He ran his name and lo and behold to no surprise, there were outstanding warrants. They smelled booze and pot on him and went to search his car. Just out of curiosity, I just had to hang around to see how this played out. It was great. They cuffed him and put him in the patrol car for the warrants. Beside his license being suspended, no proof of insurance and the car tags being expired they found pot, drug pipe and a open bottle of hard booze. I had to chuckle. If the guy had just accepted my apology, he wouldn't be heading to jail. I guess the lesson here is if you have outstanding warrants, keep a low profile and keep your mouth shut. Ahh, the arrogance of youth.
