of course there was a quid pro quo.
they have already abandoned that defense.
now they seem to be resting their case on the idea that impeachment is not a thing.

My favorite part of this investigation has been how many lifetime public servants in the State department have just ignored Trump's ominous threat to them not to testify before congress, and testified anyway.
Trump's obvious next step is to sully the reputation of those traitors who ignored the order not to testify, and he's struggling to do that, too - like Taylor, who has worked for each of the last five presidents and who was appointed to his current position by non other than Mike Pompeo. So much for calling him a 'deep state Dem plant.' Even his early military service appears to be unimpeachable.
If you can't bully your employees into testifying, and you can't find any dirt of them, you're fucked, as Trump is discovering. Even some in the far right might find it hard to believe every single senior State department employee in the Ukraine is lying because he wants nothing more than to take Trump down.
