Wow, I see a few causes here.
One is Amazon and other companies that ship tons of merchandise; I suspect that they get price breaks on shipping when they use only a limited number of box sizes that stack easily in trucks, so the item goes into the smallest box that will fit, but may be way too big for the item.
Another is "blister packaging" in stores; small items are put on big cards and encased in plastic so you can't tuck it in a pocket or purse and steal it. Unfortunately, I believe a lot of these items are bought on-line so shoplifting isn't a risk- but they still have the excessive packaging.
Some is convenience- I shudder when I buy snacks at convenience stores on road trips because I end up with so much plastic. (I travel with silverware to avoid using plastic for that.)
And, finally, some is to force you to buy more than one. Want one apple? Tough- they're four to a package. You just need one screw? Here, have a card of six.

Why break eggs and put them in plastic bags? It makes no sense at all!

Why break eggs and put them in plastic bags? It makes no sense at all! I wouldn't take them even if they were free - looks downright nasty to me!

That was a surprise seeing the coke cans wrapped up. We usually wipe off the can from a vending machine, etc, before opening it. Obviously we have way too many people that support this visible waste portrayed in front of them, otherwise companies would never be able to sell it. I think some people do worry about human contact with food sources in public sales area, where someone touching loose product with dirty hands, etc, and then putting it back down for someone eslse to pick it up might be a problem. We noticed some hotels with continental breakfast in the morning are serving apples and pears in wrapping for their guests, but the bananas are still loose. Probably because you peel the skin off the banana but eat the skin of the other fruit?
