Was someone promising to balance the budget? All I heard from all of the parties was ways they were planning on increasing spending and/or decreasing revenue.

In case anyone is interested, the Liberals went with the minority government option rather than a coalition government. We'll see how long it lasts. Hopefully at least a few years although DH is betting it crashes with the first budget. I think he underestimates the NDP determination to keep the Conservatives out.

Trudeau, in 2015, said the budget will balance itself. It didn't. That was one election ago. Unfulfilled promises from then stopped counting after the polls closed on October 21st. Did anyone say that this time?

Strategically though a coalition with the NDP would limit some of their policy options. The Liberals are going to have to try to straddle the middle line this way. To avoid flaming out fast, everything they do is going to have to keep either the NDP happy or the Conservatives. It might be the best for the country or it might be the worst. It depends on what policies they advance and how much thought are put into them before implementation. On the other hand, if either the Conservatives or the NDP think they will get more seats in a new election, they will likely torpedo the Liberals anyway.
