Thanks. I got the messages.
I've applied for a lot of blogging jobs through ProBlogger over the years. Historically, I have found it to be a giant time sink that never pans out to actual income.
There is an overwhelming number of "customers" out there looking to "hire" writers to write their blog posts. They make a lot of demands and edits, then use my work and never bother to pay me for it.
Or, they claim to want "test" articles and again they use them or sell them and then never pay me for the work. And, then there's absolutely nothing I can do about it.
I have a second mill and another gig site I can pick up some work from if it comes to that, but I am really hoping my usual gig will stay around until I get my house sold and I can get out of the content mill writing business. After that, I will be more open to writing for private clients.
I'm really not trying to be like, ahem, you know who, and dismiss everyone's suggestions. Getting my house sold and getting rid of all my crap is a massive job and I really just want to work where I know I will actually get paid for the effort and get my house done, sold, and get out of here.
A realtor is coming out today to look at my property.

Establishing residency in SD requires you spend a day there. I don't have a car or the money to get there. It would also immediately end my access to health coverage. So, not sure how that would work, the same for setting up an LLC. The companies I freelance for only hires individual contractors. We already all run our own businesses as sole proprietors. And, my IP address still will show I am sitting in CA and working until I move. I don't have the option to buy a car or move until my house sells and provides me the money to do so. I don't have credit and no one to help or loan me money even for the short-term. So, selling my house is the only way I can move on with my life and fund the project. The good news is once my house sells, I will have the cash to purchase a vehicle and the ability to go buy a new piece of property. And, my art and lapidary businesses will be fully funded and I won't have to write anymore for a living. Getting to that point is the challenge, since I planned to list in March. For now, I am doing as much work as possible to save some income in case I get "your services are no longer needed, thank your state" emails at the end of the year. However, this time of year is a serious challenge because the freelance writing market gets flooded with people who write to make extra money for the holiday season. It's also going to change the amount of cash I spend fixing/repairing my house prior to sale because I need to pile up all the extra cash I can find in case I need it to feed myself and pay my winter heating bills. Ok, I'll outline this as clearly you have never moved states for work. - Google Mail Boxes in SD in 2020. Pick one, call, pay ~$250 to get a mail box (yes I know you don't have the money, but find it or charge it as this is better than your income going to $0).
- Declare to your employers you are moving and here is your new address.
- Don't tell CA so you keep your health benefits (but don't lie about the income).
- I have used my prior state Drivers License for all forms at any new job in a new state. They have NEVER asked me to update these after changing residency and rarely did I get it changed in the required 30 days, much less 90 days. Normally it took 6 months to a year.
- Fill out new SD withholding form (probably isn't one).
- Call a realtor and ask about some properties, get them to e-mail you information as you want to buy once your house sells.
- Don't worry for 6 months, if you house sells, great, no fraud you intended to move to SD and just started the process early.
- Life changes, a great property showed up in OR and you couldn't find a SD property. Move to OR, change residency again.
In move years you have to file in both states for the year you move. So CA won't catch you for 2020 if you "move early" but don't actually move until Dec 2020. People do this all the time. Moving states is messy and never have I known anyone that followed all the rules or anyone that got "caught". You just have to move within that year. When you do your taxes, don't worry that what % you declare for each state (do what it actually happens). Your 1099 for 2020 is for the year and doesn't break down each month, so for 2020 you are a SD 1099 worker, even if only for 1 day in Dec.
Could you get caught for violating some rule? Yes, but highly unlikely and trust me, people like me have way bigger pockets to get taxes from by auditing these moves than you, your not worth the time. There are at least 10+ license plates in my parking lot with out of state plates as people haven't changed their residency fully.
Is this unethical = YES, but it is also the stupid government and everyone won't be able to figure anything out for some time.
Finally, of course the employers are sending the letter, business wants CA residents to tell their representatives to block the bill. That benefits all companies, so it is a scare tactic, nothing will even go into place for months.

Easy to say, but you may not realize that this poster survives below poverty level. And when I say survives, I mean that literally. She was in a tough marriage, her husband was disabled, had lots of medical bills, and died. She's been supporting her son who had been having seizures that haven't been fully diagnosed or treated because Medicaid won't cover it.
I, for one, admire what she's been able to accomplish these past few years, and hope that she's able to figure out this latest hurdle and clear it. She can't afford to just pick up and move. Selling her house is complicated by the local pot cartel.
The way I read it, she can't afford not to move. Sometimes shit's just gotta happen.
