The name "Wyoming" comes from the Delaware tribe , their word was: Mechewami-ing , meaning "great plains". Curious because the Delaware did not live anywhere near here. I did not know that the other names in the running were: Cheyenne, Big Horn, Yellowstone, Sioux, and Lincoln. If you don't know, it appears a Lauren Cahn did an article 7-12-2019 in Readers Digest on this. MSN als has a site on lifestyles with the information. www.msn.com/en-us/Lifestyle/did-you-know-/the-literal-translation-of-everystate-name/ss-AAEg5Nr?li=BBnb7Kz Now, knowing me, you all realize the site I just list enevitably won't work without one of you correcting whatever error the system thinks I will have made &%$#@*** technology!!

Indiana was basically named for "Indian land" The original "Indiana territory" was the first territory in the Northwest territory to be named. It included Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan for sure, not sure about Wisconsin. I do remember Illinois and Michigan were carved out of the Indiana territory, but the state of Indiana kept the territorial name.
Will have to google it.

"Quebec" is from the Algonquin word, kebec, which means "where the river narrows."

"Quebec" is from the Algonquin word, kebec, which means "where the river narrows." It is amazing how much of the U.S.and Canada is tied directly with American Indian names for rivers, land areas and Indian settlements with English, Spanish, or French interpretation and put to towns, land areas and states settled by settlers. I wonder how many American citizens even think about how the names came into being and used today. It does show the direct communication of the early explorers with the native population and how the explorers uses native names for so much of the country.

I live in Maryland. Not much fodder for astonishment to be found in "translating" that.

Pennsylvania- Penn’s Woods/Penn’s Forest. Silvae-Latin for woods/forest. The king apparently was indebted(gambling problems) to William Penn and in exchange for erasing the debt Penn asked for a territory in the New World.

Originally from the state named after Feast of the flowers, then lived in state named for King George and now in state named for Indian word vegetation gatherers. That's the Choctaw meaning and then you have the Creek meaning tribal town! Take your pick

Florida. Derived from Flor - duh: place where stupid people gather in great numbers, go stir-crazy from too much sun and commit crime that puts them on the front page of every paper on the planet. Actually, it's derived from the Spanish phrase for "land of flowers" and was given the name by Ponce de Leon. If only poor Ponce knew what his paradise would become...

Connecticut, from the Indian word “Quinnehtukqut” meaning beside the long tidal river. I wasn’t able to find out which tribe the word is derived from.
