I didn't do just a double take. I did a triple take with his comment about American versus French wines.

If a server brings you a glass of wine minus you seeing the bottle from which it was poured, can you tell just by looking at the glass of wine it's an American wine versus a French wine?

NFW
many (most?) American grapes are from Europe.
the climate is quite similar in the best growing regions.
there is no way in hell you can "see" the difference (with matching varietals).
many tasters can't taste the difference, either.
and I doubt Trump, Mr. Ketchup On Overdone Steak, is an exception.

Just more creative hyperbole.

Either he, Jr. or their company owns a vineyard in Va. (I think that's the location)….so of course he wants less competition from really GOOD wines.
I don't drink wine, don't like it, don't like beer either, nor coffee!

I like wine, but I can't tell a good WA wine from a good CA wine. Let alone a good French wine...
But then, this is the guy who said he was a "stable genius"

Super adorable way of saying "ridiculous bullshit"! It's Trump's phrase. Way back when paid someone to ghost write 'The Art of the Deal' for him, he claimed creative hyperbole was a great marketing tool.
Sounds better than lying, but it's still lying. Too bad more Americans didn't read that book (or like me, read the article by the guy who ghost wrote that book for him, and later regretted it enormously). More people might have realized we were electing a carnival barker.

On my 21st birthday...my gal pal didn't want to go out...so I went alone. I went to our regular haunt & about 8 guys bought me drinks...all different, all what was their normal drink. From there I drove to a beer bar (Ca., LA area) where I'd worked in the past...you got a free pitcher on your birthday there. Since I wasn't a beer drinker, I opted for a glass...and then a regular customer there challenged me to a chug-a-lug....I beat him....I don't remember driving home, but I woke up the next morning in bed by myself, so I must have driven. That may have been the last time I had a beer. ETA...That's not counting once before that when there was a party at my place...drinking beer & chasing with shots of what ever bottle was available. Boy, was I sick after that one.

I thought that Colonial America had to graft native grapes with European grapes to get them to grow here, but a couple hundred years later, there was that blight in Europe and they all used the new American varieties to replant. So, no wine is pure American nor pure European - but mostly all the same grapes, just grown in different places. Or do I have that wrong. I think my Dad told me all of that, so I believed it without any further research. I am sure the story is way more complicated than a few sentences and there have probably been changes since the blight.

I am sure the story is way more complicated than a few sentences and there have probably been changes since the blight. some of the strains are genetically indistinguishable. I believe it is MOST.
some of them are hybrids of unknown origin. Zinfandel is an example.
the Euro strains (again, going off memory) would include all of the grapes with French names. which is most varieties. almost all US wine grape stock came from the Bordeaux region.
DISCLAIMER: I am not a wine expert. I used to drink the stuff, and do the tastings, etc. most of what I know comes from the plethora of wine snobs in my region of California, and my extensive dining out.
