House Ethics Complaint Filed Against Ilhan Omar

According to the complaint, there is "Substantial, compelling and, to date, unrefuted evidence has been uncovered that Rep. Ilhan Omar may have committed the following crimes in violation of both federal law and Minnesota state law: perjury, immigration fraud, marriage fraud, state and federal tax fraud, and federal student loan fraud."

That unrefuted part is very important. She doesn't seem interested in explaining any of this- and that is her right under both the 1st and 5th Amendments. She can't be compelled to speak. However, her refusal to address these very serious issues isn't the end of it. It's just the beginning. Meaningful investigations at both the state and federal level should already be ongoing.

You might want to check that. It's as false as most of their "facts".

JW has made numerous false and unsubstantiated claims that have been picked up by right-wing news outlets. Courts have dismissed the vast majority of its lawsuits.[1]

Interesting that the same level of hysteria isn't being leveled against some of the other congressmen who currently caught up in legal/ethical investigations - from both sides.

She is a first term Representative. She is one of 435 Representatives. She does not represent me. The charges do not involve any policy issues. Why should I care?

Actually those actions have been very successfully refuted and that is why she hasn't been charged with anything. Those falsely accusing her of this should serve the sentence she would have gotten if convicted.

Given that Omar and her siblings all came to live in the U.S. under identical circumstances as refugees, and that Omar herself became a naturalized U.S. citizen while still a minor, how did one of her siblings end up with such a radically different immigration status that she would have needed to marry him in order to facilitate his U.S. residency application?

Also, if Ahmed Elmi were truly Omar’s brother, why would he have needed to take the drastic step of marrying her in order to secure a path to U.S. citizenship? U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policies qualify immigrants as eligible to apply for permanent residency status (and later become naturalized citizens) if they are the “spouse of a U.S. citizen” or the “brother or sister of a U.S. citizen.” Why would Omar commit a federal crime and risk a prison sentence (and possibly her own citizenship status) in order to provide her brother with the opportunity to apply for something he would already have been eligible to seek?

Elmi reportedly attended North Dakota State University with Omar between 2009 and 2012. But as a British citizen Elmi could have studied at any university in the European Union or European Economic Area, and in some of those countries his education would have been tuition-free. Was attending school in North Dakota instead such a priority as to merit committing marriage and immigration fraud and risking a fine of up to $250,000 and five years in prison?

If Elmi was so desperate for U.S. residency/citizenship status that he engaged in a sham “marriage” with his sister in order to seek it, why did he return to England after his split with Omar? And why is there no record of Elmi’s having applied for or obtained such status if that was the whole point of his supposedly “fraudulent” marriage to his alleged sister?

Danielle Stella of Minneapolis made a splash this month as a vocal challenger for Ilhan Omar’s congressional seat.

The self-described "special ed professional" from Minneapolis posted lengthy threads on Twitter, accusing Omar of “increase[ing] crime in Minneapolis” and “laugh[ing] and smile[ing] about evil acts,” which got support from the far-right. But she also posted a suggestive hashtag evoking the far-right conspiracy group, QAnon, prompting people to question her philosophies.

She didn’t respond to interview requests, but in the internet scuffle that followed also churned up some alleged patchiness in Stella’s past.

It turns out that Stella – under a former surname -- has been arrested twice this year on allegations she shoplifted $2,300 worth of stuff from a suburban Target in January, plus $40’s worth of stuff from a grocery store in April, according to the Guardian newspaper.

A complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court says Stella told police she remembered arriving at the Target to do some shopping, but “nothing else” due to post-traumatic stress disorder. (She has publicly stated that she was the victim of a violent assault in 2008.) She allegedly explained that she “normally goes to Target with someone because of anxiety around people.”

In April, a warrant was issued for her arrest for allegedly failing to show up for a court hearing. Bloomington officers arrested her later that month after she was spotted stealing a bottle of tick spray for cats at a Cub Foods – among other “cat merchandise” and cat food she was putting “under her purse so that they could not be seen.”
