I'd rather pay for an ice cream than wait in line with 6,984 other people. Ben and Jerry's used to have a Free Ice Cream Day....the lines reminded me of bread lines in Soviet Russia....snaked around for blocks and blocks.

I am making double dark chocolate frozen yogurt this weekend in honor of National Ice Cream Day. Does that count?

I celebrate National Ice Cream Day most every day, all summer: Edy's Double fudge brownie.

I celebrate National Ice Cream Day most every day, all summer: Edy's Double fudge brownie. Yum. I liked that one, when I could find it. Edy's used to occupy a lot of space in the grocery store freezer here, but so many new brands have come out, that the space is pretty tight. I've tried Vice, Jeni's, Magnum (the pops and the pints), Talenti, Tillamook (a new one here), and Blue Bell recently and liked them all. Three I tried that were not worth a second try: Halo Top, Blue Bunny and Mayfield's; they weren't awful, just not the best.
Publix store brand is good (it is made by McArthur) and some of the Breyer's premium flavors are good, too. It's nice that some brands are offering pints, so you can try new brands and flavors without investing in a gallon.

I am now eating Edy's Double fudge brownie with fresh blackberries. Nice combo.

I like Coaticook's Black Cherry. It's a small dairy in Ontario and they don't even advertise. Their packaging looks industrial, but the ice cream is to die for. It flies off the shelves.

I am now eating Edy's Double fudge brownie with fresh blackberries. Nice combo. I like to top mine with either slightly cooked-down blueberries or cherries. Not mushy fruit, just cooked enough to create some juice but maintain the fruit integrity. I am making waffles for breakfast tomorrow, which I planned to top with blueberries. I think I will make the topping tonight and make extra for my frozen yogurt. That mixture is in the fridge, chilling. I used a 72% cacao with sea salt from Iceland (Fresh Market stores carry the brand) and added a quarter-cup of high-fat unsweetened cocoa powder, plus a half-cup sugar. Never made this recipe this way, so I hope it's good, or at least interesting.
