It had been a National Lakeshore designation but has now become a National Park. Surprisingly nestled next to steel mills and refineries we have a park that is vast in diversity, close to millions of citiznens and such a treasure for our citizens. www.msn.com/en-us/travel/tripideas/indiana-dunes-is-americas-newest-national-park-and-one-of-its-most-diverse/ar-AADNtla?li=BBnb7KzI was born and raised in the area, and have watched the government buy up land over the decades, buying homes, businesses located north of highway US 12 hugging along the Lake Michigan shoreline, reclaimiing the land and restoring it to it's original beginnings. Indiana has had a great state park here (Indiana Dunes state park) for decades on the lake front, but it was the Federal government who came in and bought surrounding acreage saving/restoring it for future generations. The biodiversity here is amazing.

Well, we have no oil under the land and most of the dunes were mined out decades ago. If they want to expand Lake Michigan's foot print I guess they could mine some more sand. He could mandate the expansion of the Port of Indiana that is next door. They mined the sand dunes there to build the port. Since they announced it is a National Park instead of a national sea shore, locals have to get there by 9am or they cannot get in because people from Michigan and Illinois want to visit the newest park in the system. Does not look on -e sand grain different then it did as a natioanal sea shore.

Indiana Cyanide Leak Kills 3,000 Fish and Shut Down Beaches at America's Newest National ParkBeaches at America’s newest national park were shut down earlier this month, after an Indiana steel factory leaked cyanide into a tributary of Lake Michigan, killing 3,000 fish. The National Park Service closed the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk beach area, at the Indiana Dunes National Park last Friday, according to a release from the agency. Those areas remain closed. The park was designated the 61st, and newest, national park in February after a century of seeking the title. John Cannon, mayor of Portage, the city where the chemical spill occurred, has criticized the state’s environmental agency for waiting several days to report the incident. “The biggest concern I had was that the city was not aware of any kind of difficulty in our waterway until Thursday when thousands of dead fish show up in our marina,” Cannon tells TIME on Tuesday. He continued: “We can handle the truth. Let us know what is going on and we can advise our residents in a proper manner without panicking.” Complete article here: Indiana Cyanide Leak Kills 3,000 Fish and Shut Down Beaches at America's Newest National Park

Well, they're allowed to do that now. The Stream Protection Act is now dead.

For example: New Grand Staircase plans greenlight mining on lands Trump stripped from Utah monumentHundreds of thousands of acres inside what used to be Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument will be opened to mining and drilling under a plan the Bureau of Land Management released Friday, renewing charges that President Donald Trump’s executive action reducing the 23-year-old preserve was engineered to promote energy extraction in some of America’s most scenic landscapes. The plans also greatly expand access for recreation on lands remaining in the monument, with expanded visitor services and signs, group size limits lifted to as many as 50 people, and allowing competitive sporting events, such as next month’s Grand to Grand Ultra footrace, which currently is routed outside the monument. Friday’s release comes on the heels of the final management plan for Bears Ears National Monument, the other big preserve Trump eviscerated a year into his presidency. Go for it if you want I guess. I need more than that. Are there any regulations as far as how this mining will take place ?
