For our Friday entertainment I give you President Trump's tweet: Donald J. Trump ✔ @realdonaldtrump
For all of the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon - We did that 50 years ago. They should be focused on the much bigger things we are doing, including Mars (of which the Moon is a part), Defense and Science! Trump Helpfully Instructs NASA to Get “Focused” on “Science”The article is worth reading.

Tweet from last month Donald J. Trump
@realdonaldtrump
Under my Administration, we are restoring @nasa to greatness and we are going back to the Moon, then Mars. I am updating my budget to include an additional $1.6 billion so that we can return to Space in a BIG WAY!

"When does that trip to Mars leave again? Because I know a certain 60 percent of the U.S. adult population that might be interested in a seat."
If I never had to hear, see, or read another tweet ever again from trump, book me a seat.

Sure, go to Mars instead of fixing health care. Sounds about right. He just wants to plant a Trump flag on Mars.

I thought he was such a great businessman?
A lot of countries and private industry are in the planning unmanned moon industrial activities, such as mining for rare earth metals and industries where zero G would be a big asset. Also working on making the moon a kind of gas station for further exploration of space, because it takes so much less fuel to lift off from the moon compared to escaping earth's atmosphere (someone compared it to climbing Mt Everest vs climbing the empire state building). Plus now that we know there is water on the moon, the water could be broken into H2 and O2 - rocket fuel.
Lots of economic potential. I guess if it isn't a golf resort or have a façade that Trump can paint gold and stick his name on, he isn't interested.

Seems like in every administration NASA’s main goals get jerked around and it seems like the manned program pisses away so much on the ever changing primary objectives.
I hope China starts doing some meaningful things in their space program to give the US a kick in the ass to do something with theirs.

NASA should demand the country go metric. Tucker Carlson & some guest had a meltdown the other night over the metric system.
"Almost every nation on Earth has fallen under the yoke of tyranny—the metric system," Carlson said. "From Beijing to Buenos Aires, from Lusaka to London, the people of the world have been forced to measure their environment in millimeters and kilograms. "The United States is the only major country that has resisted, but we have no reason to be ashamed for using feet and pounds."
Panero called the metric system "the original system of global revolution and new world orders."
Carlson replied: "God bless you, and that's exactly what it is. Esperanto died, but the metric system continues, this weird, utopian, inelegant, creepy system that we alone have resisted." "The metric system, meanwhile, is the product of the French Revolution. It was imposed at the business end of the guillotine," Panero said. "It's assumed to be progressive. It's assumed that everyone has gotten to be behind it."
Carlson characterized the metric system is "completely made up out of nothing."
"It's totally made up," Panero said. "Even worse than overturning custom has been the meter's imposition of ten. It's a ten size fits all mentality. Now here's how it gets crazy. The French Revolution went all in for 10. They tried to impose a 10 day week, 100 hours, 100 minutes, 100 seconds—they had a whole revolutionary calendar." "It connects us to our ancestors through cups, through teaspoons and tablespoons, I can still cook the recipes of my grandparents. And it's that connection to the past that the French Revolution and the revolutionaries have always tried to destroy," Panero said. and for the Fox viewers ready to scream "fake news", there's video of the entire conversation.

Christ, what an idiot! Sounds like a guy too stupid to adapt. And the Imperial system isn't "totally made up"? 16 ounces in a pound, 12 inches in a foot, 5280 feet in a mile, water boiling at 212......no, that doesn't sound made up at all. It's a hodgepodge of numbers without rhyme or reason. Well, if it makes sense, the US will dig in its heels and not do it.

If this isn't proof of Fox news crazy control over their viewers, I don't know what is. We are falling behind everyone in the world in math because they all think in tens. Tens for weight, tens for money, tens for distance. Ten is a super easy number to calculate with- add a zero, move the decimal, etc. Out society spends so much brain power trying to remember how many ounces in a pound (and how many ounces in a cup). That brain power could be used for better things. However, an intelligent, educated society is not what Fox and the GOP want. It is harder to control them.

The best thing I ever did for myself was to buy a metric measuring tape. Fuck trying to find half the distance of 34 3/8.
The hardest part about it is that my brain is still wired to the imperial system, so if I want something to be x-feet long, I have to convert it to cm first since thinking in those units does not come naturally.
What a weird, weird thing to get bent out of shape about.

What a weird, weird thing to get bent out of shape about. It will, with practice. It didn't come naturally to me either, at first. Now, ordering 200 grams of smoked turkey comes very naturally. Water freezing at 0 and boiling at 100 makes all the sense in the world.

the metric system is fundamentally sensible.
having the king's foot as a unit of measure is just dogshit stupid. and only a complete asshole would insist on it.

It connects us to our ancestors?
Our ancestors didn't think it was healthy to take baths more than once a week, and thought tomatoes were poisonous. I don't think we should get too hung up on doing things exactly like our ancestors did them.
I work for an International company and have to submit tracking reports in kg and metric tonnes every month, which means I have to translate lbs and short tons to kg and metric tonnes. Pain in the ass, but since every other division of my company uses metric, I have to, too.
They're not at all impressed with Americans clinging to their 'ancestral' weights and measures.

Speaking of Fox and bat shit crazy, Hannity went on a rant about Pelosi making the comment that she would like to see Trump in prison. Calls to lock up political opponents are only something that happen in 'banana republics' he says.

So he is trolling us, does he have dementia, or does he somehow think there is a difference between calling to have Hillary thrown in jail, vs trying to lock up Trump?
I mean, I know Hannity lives firmly up Trump's ass, but he has to recognize how hypocritical this sounds.

Hannity knows what he is doing. He is making a fortune and has a god-like status among his fans. He doesn't give a crap about sounding hypocritical, or the "right" thing to do, or corruption by one party, or the country.

Someone needs to convince Trump the metric system is a good idea. He'd make a big show of rolling it out, he'd claim he invented it and would normally win an Oscar for it, if it wasn't for the damn liberal media.
But, at least we would switch to the metric system.

Don't call it the metric system - convince Trump he's invented an entirely new and improved system, based on powers of ten (like money!), call it Freedom <something>. He'll eat it up, want the glory, etc. And yeah, we'd finally get the metric system I remember them trying to roll out in the 1970s. . Then can we please redesign the stupid time system we have? Babylonian base 60 hours, minutes, seconds. Days named for Norse gods. Months named for Roman gods, or just Latin number words (in the wrong places - September is not the seventh month, and so forth). Random month lengths. No logical alignment of seasonal start points. Wait, no I want to shift everything to hexadecimal instead of decimal. With everything computerized, the math would be so much cleaner in hex. No more float issues when converting hex to decimal for the stupid humans. Just start teaching kids hex at birth. Ok, and get 6 new chars instead of co-opting A thru F, please.

Once again this is what happens when people consider science beneath them because it requires you actually fucking read and understand something rather than shout your opinion in 40 characters or less. Trump is merely a symptom of a much deeper problem with this country. You go back to the moon dip shit because the moon is going to be used as a staging place/rest stop/gas station for longer and longer space voyages leading to the goal of getting to Mars. Also we need to go back to the moon so we can practice establishing bases in space and study the effects of living long term in space on astronauts BEFORE sending them on a 2+ year voyage to Mars. You don't leap straight to sending people to what quite possibly could be their deaths. JFC. Do the tragedies of Mercury 1, The Challenger and the Columbia mean absolutely nothing?

a better example is trying to find the acceleration of a given object given an applied force in English -vs- Metric systems. or, even worse, an impulse and momentum problem. or how about a mass moment of inertia problem for a rotating object?
the English system is completely fucked up in terms of MASS (there really IS NO mass unit), and mass is crucial to physics.
temperature is also really lame. the only way I can remember the THREE common systems is to remember the temp that CO2 freezes/sublimates at. it is completely absurd.
but sure, if team USA wants to keep crashing satellites into planets due to conversion errors, you just go right ahead.
