My mother can no longer handle money or write a check, so I'm closing out her bank account and changing her direct deposit social security to go to my dad's bank account. That is her only income.
I did it online over the weekend, and it won't start until the August 12, 2019 check.

wow, that's long. obv employer vs SSA, but my change at least took effect enough to not DD to my old bank within one pay period. I got a live check this time, next one should be DD.

Well, June's payments are probably already processed or in process, and July would probably be a live check, thus Aug would be the 1st DD. SS is paid out monthly, isn't it?

I remember that from making changes to MIL's SS checks. Massive PITA.

I changed banks and SS said if I made change by a certain date it would hit the next month. It hit the next month. I think I put the change into effect on the 15th. Now the website said up to 3 months for change to be good. Guess I just got lucky.

Yeah, this is typical. I'm changing bank accounts and revised direct deposit information for my 2 pensions and for SS around mid-April. Both pensions went to the new account on May 1. SS did not. Will be interesting to see where it lands in June.

I think when I was rep payee, I did receive the first check by paper. After that, they went to the new account.
With my civil service pension, they have gotten so much faster. The cut-off date for making changes is now a week later than it used to be and any change goes in to effect the next month if it's made by the cut off date.
