*But not from President Trump. Donald Trump Thinks the Fourth of July Needs Much More Donald Trump According to multiple administration officials who spoke to the Washington Post, the president is “making tentative plans to address the nation from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial” during this year’s independence day festivities. Hopefully only the Trump Network will broadcast it if he does.

Any other President, I mean a real President, would deliver a message from his office without a public love fest. Wouldn't interrupt a celebration to get attention. Oh a 2020 campaign speech.

For 50 years this has been a celebration of American, with fireworks and music, and presidents have not intruded on it. It's supposed to be a celebration of US, not of any particular politician or political party. Until Trump figured out he could make a campaign rally out of it without costing his re-election committee a dime.
At least he's backed off his insistence he has to have tanks and jets flying overhead. As far as we know.
In the small city where I work, they used to have a Kudzu ball ever year on the same night as the Cotton ball (the coming out party for the daughters of the wealthy families). The Kudzu ball was held in a Kmart parking lot, and people wore camo, some of the ladies made kudzu ballgowns, and everyone drank beer. I think we need the Kudzu Fourth of July on the same day as Trump's fourth of July rally, in a DC Walmart parking lot. I bet there would be plenty of musical talent willing to play for free, and I'd donate to the fireworks fund NO POLITICS WOULD BE ALLOWED.

I thought those went the way of the dodo birds.

Probably has gone the way of the dodo birds everywhere but the South, where we cling to our elitist traditions as tightly as we grip our guns and our mint julep glasses
