I am retiring as of June 1, and every day seems to bring something else I am supposed to do. A couple of days ago it was to mail copies of our Medicare cards.
Today it was paperwork to select a payout option.
I am slowly trying to declutter and clean out my room. I don't want to strip it of everything interesting, though, until my seniors take exams. That still leaves a week. I signed up to have it painted, a gift of sorts to whomever moves in. Once you get stuff on the wall, no one wants to take it all down to have the room painted. I don't know when it was last painted, but it wasn't in the 20 years I have been in there. Anyway, now seems an appropriate time.
I worry some about money and healthcare. I have a pension, SS, and $460k in retirement savings. I really don't want to touch the retirement savings. There is no COLA adjustment for our pensions. Retired teachers last received one in 2008. Those retirement savings will be really important some day.
Anyway, it's all just really odd. I'm taking off Monday just because. I have six extra days that get me no additional retirement credit. I can't take that many, but I'm definitely taking one or two.

Congratulations! I am so happy for you! You are clearly a stellar teacher, you care so much about your students and your colleagues.
I'm glad that you'll finally have more time for yourself and your DH.

Oh wait....you have that pesky, expensive healthcare to worry about. Never mind.

By the way @bamafan1954 , if you're really worried about retiring/finances I'm guessing you can sub? Not sure how that works there, but I know it works here. If it does work there and you do opt to sub, I'd definitely limit it to 2 or 3 days a week this year as a transition, and then to 2 days. You do NOT want to be subbing FT.
We ran into DS1's and DS3's favorite MS teacher recently (DS1 is 32, DS3 is 21). She retired 3 years ago, but the school was short on teachers this year, so they begged her to go back to FT for a semester. She told us she will NEVER go back to FT again LOL. But she WILL sub for them 2 days/week.

I AM planning on subbing but only 2 days a week. 😊

Congrats! What are Medicare cards? Should I have one? It's the U.S.' mandatory (if you are eligible) healthcare system for those 65 and older. Look at your last paystub and you should see an employer/employee contribution for Medicare.
There are exceptions of course.
You might want to read up about it at medicare.gov

Congratulations! It's a new world but it sounds like you are approaching it in exactly the right way. Ironically, most of the worries I had about retiring never materialized so I regret wasting many good nights sleep for nothing!

Don't worry about retiring. I went really early and it was one of the best things I did. Your income sounds like "enough" if you are careful. One thing I highly recommend is putting some of your retirement savings into income producing stocks. Study up on investing and do it slowly. You can usually average a good return and be safe by investing in utilities and other quality stocks. Reinvest the dividends until you need them. That will help the nest egg grow. When you do need it, try to only spend the income. My company had a plan to cover health insurance until you hit 65. Then Medicare took over. Do consider a supplemental plan for Medicare. No problems yet. Good luck.

Congratulations! I’m so glad you’re going to have some time for yourself and your DH. I retired at the end of March with about the same in savings but have Tricare for healthcare as well as Medicare Parts A and B. I’m having so much fun, I don’t know how I found the time for work, except I don’t have to do housework on the weekends any more!
You should think about getting a supplemental plan tp help with your healthcare costs if you don’t have other coverage.
Good of luck with subbing.

Alabama provides a "supplement" of sorts for retired teachers and family. It will cost us $162 a month (only $35 of it is for me) with really good prescription coverage (no doughnut hole). I think it will be fine, but you never know until you have to really use it. I know I was really upset about the coverage for the ambulance ($300 out of a $2000 non-negotiated bill) when DH had one of his heart attacks. Fortunately, Medicare, which he had, was more generous and covered the rest.

Congrats! I retired in January and absolutely LOVE IT!! I think you will be fine, money wise. My MIL (she's passed on now) retired with a lot less and had an absolutely wonderful retirement. It's really about family, friends, hobbies, and time. You fit what you want to do to your budget, but it's all good!
Enjoy.

Congrats!
I really love hearing how much people are enjoying retirement. I work around a lot of people that can't seem to move on...I can't figure out if they are afraid of being bored, of not having enough money, or maybe both...These are people that have made good money their entire lives and have been extremely involved in their profession. It seems like they just don't know what to do with themselves if they stop working.
