Wow. I need baby steps here, people. So instead of washing with plain water, I buy Cerave. I continue with the retinol moisterizer every day but instead put it on at night? Use Ordinary during the day? Or a high SPF moisturizer with hyaleuric (sp) acid? Why exfoliate? Why mask? Why special eye treatment? I don't wear face makeup, only mascara and sometimes lipstick. I'm not averse to doing so, just have never really learned how. I do have some acne scars on my upper lip but people tell me I'm the only one to see them. I don't believe that. As I said, I'm 59. I'd prefer to continue to look younger than my age, that'd be great. I think part of the reason my skin isn't in worse shape is that it was oily for so many years. It isn't any longer, though. For me, the mask is keep my face from drying out and peeling.

Just for funsies:
I also use a serum on my chin. It's supposed to help my chin from being so red.

You use soap on your face? And Pants is getting on me about Noxema! Correctly formulated soap is fine for your face Unfortunately Dove & Caress are "Beauty Bars", i.e. detergents and despite Dermatologist's recommending (especially Dove) detergents for your face...they're really not a good choice. I have no interest in slamming anything that anyone chooses for washing their face, especially when it works so I'm not picking on you countrygirl2. Or anyone else who has a great skin care routine; what works for you, works for you and it's all good. I've personally tried the really expensive skin care products - daughter is an Aesthetician who works for a Dermatologist so she has suggested products over the years....BUT I settled on this for me: I use an activated charcoal bar made with skin-loving oils and butters (super oily skin with super dry spots during the winter) and a face lotion crafted by a friend (she used to sell it on Amazon but couldn't keep up with the demand) that makes my 76yo mom look like she's in her 50's. It's all about what works for your skin type. I agree about the dove and caress. When my oily skin started getting really dry in spots, it was suggested to me and it was not good at all. I'm currently coasting along with good sample soaps I've gotten from various places.

As a good feminist, I just want to take a minute and remind all of us that beauty is not the fee we have to pay to the world for existing. It feels like it sometimes, but it's not. I struggle with this a lot personally. But if you don't want to do all the stuff, you DO NOT have to. I for one don't think less of anyone for wrinkles or dry skin or no makeup or whatever else is "unattractive." If you don't want to dive into the crazy world of dermatology, it's not a requirement. Not even sunscreen.

I honestly don't think all of that is necessary unless you have problematic skin. I'm sure it's nice to do the whole shebang every once in a while to pamper yourself, but if you have basically "normal" skin it's probably fine to have a simple daily routine and do something extra to address trouble spots as needed. Keep in mind I'm not an expert though! I also think a lot of it is environment and genes. And being mindful of the effects of sun exposure. The women in my family don't seem to get a lot of wrinkles or have a lot of issues with their skin. I'm guessing that's part of the reason I've been able to get by with the bare minimum for so long. Unfortunately, we ARE cursed with flabby arms, overweight or not. But that's another story.

Broken out skin sometimes hurts, sometimes itches. (I have shitty skin, so it runs the gamut. I still don't do all the various crap because too much seems to hurt me more than help me.)

Me too on the wanting skin that isn't physically annoying or painful. The dryness and sensitivity issues I started experiencing in my late 20s were what really started me learning anything about this stuff.

Me, too. It takes almost nothing for me to get an itchy rash. Drives me crazy.
I agree, a lot of stuff is probably not necessary. I really do need the sunscreen, though.

I use an all natural cleanser I found at the local natural grocer as my daily cleanser. I added a couple drops of tea tree oil to help with my recent acne problems.
Unfortunately it's not helping with my chin so I got a St Ives acne scrub for that. I'll alternate cleansers thru the week.
I have an small origins moisturizer tube I use in the winter. It's an over night mask and helps with the wind chaping.
I use a lighter moisturizer in the summer that's the same brand as my regular cleanser. Too heavy in the summer and I get blocked pores.
I do have a couple masks. IDK if they really help I just like feeling pampered. This is as close as I can get to affording a spa treatment.

I have never been without sunscreen, at the very least on my face. I am a fair blonde, with freckles and do not tan well, so I quickly learned living in TX that unless I wanted to be chronically sunburnt, I need something on my face and the rest of my body.
My sister was a ferocious tanner, she’s blonde too but not freckled so she tanned better and didn’t burn as badly. She had a stage 0 melanoma removed from her back a few years ago. She was very lucky she caught it so soon. She also looks 10 years older than I do.....and she is younger than me.

I can get a sunburn in about 10 minutes if I don't have a sunscreen on my face. I wear it every day. I've always burned easily, sometimes even with sunscreen.

I have only been sunburned once in my life. That was 3 or 4 years ago, when I cut my grass wearing a tank top. I got sunburn on my shoulders and upper back. I don't purposefully try to get a tan, but I do enjoy the feel of the sun on my skin and I don't mind my skin getting even darker when I have a tan. I did buy some sunscreen products the summer I was riding my bicycle almost every day. I think that was the year after the sunburn. I don't remember how good I was about using it like I should have. I had a serious tan that year. You could clearly see the outline of my riding clothes on my body.

Me too, although I only put it on if I'm going to be outside for more than ten minutes. I actually put it on today because I was sitting next to the window to bask in the sunshine without going outside. My daughter actually said it to me right after I thought about putting it on: "Mom--you should put on sunscreen if you're going to sit there for awhile."
I get sunburned in the car too--which ever arm is next to the window.
I don't turn 40 until the end of this year, and I already have two brown spots on my face. I'll get skin cancer at some point; it's inevitable.

I've always burnt easily and freckle. There weren't sunscreens available when I was a child, so my eldest DB and I would burn, peel and eventually get enough melanin to stop burning for the rest of the summer. It was painful. DB has had every type of skin cancer in the past few years. I haven't yet but expect to after that childhood history.
We had suntan oil, or zinc ointment for the nose in those years - that was it. My other siblings tanned well enough to avoid the real burns. I use sunscreen now but also generally avoid a lot of sun exposure. Especially early in the season the sun makes me feel sort of sick giddy. Probably my Finnish heritage coming through. I've had to take care of what types of sunscreen to use to avoid breakouts while still getting maximum protection. Even then I'll freckle on my face and arms. No doubt other parts, too, but I can't see them as easily!
Ideally I'd have a long-lasting sunscreen that didn't block any pores but provided an SPF of 50 or more for summer use, 30+ the rest of the year.

From all of your valuable advice I can see I want:
a cleanser (Cerave?) an exfoliant a moisturizer with SPF and hyaluronic acid if this is available a moisturizer with retinol (have that) a foundation of some type with SPF that doesn't emphasize wrinkles, so cream type with light coverage a rest-of-body sunscreen with SPF 30+
for future consideration, a mask - but I may get an exfoliating mask if there is such a thing also for future, eye cream. I'm not convinced yet that this won't be just extra oil and make me break out.
What should I plan on spending?
Then I'll bravely sail towards my 60's.

Finnime I am 58 and also rarely used much besides soap and moisturizer. Time to step up my game but I am clueless about all this. A friend went to an aesthetician and spent several hundred dollars on just a consult and some potions.

Sephora sells individuals masks for like $3. Look for “brightening” that’s an exfoliating mask right there. Or if you want a physical exfoliator, clay masks are everywhere. I’ve used sand and sky before, it’s pink clay from australia. It’s a nice mask but pricy.

It feels good and doesn't irritate but the colour isn't quite right.

Someone on the style thread last year flagged that IT cosmetics uses physical sunscreen in their products, and they have multiple shades of CC cream for different skin tones (if you're white, anyway.) I put it on my list to try to find in-store somewhere to try.

After reading all of this, I bought a retinol night cream which should be here tomorrow. I have been using Cetaphil face moisturizer with hyaluronic acid which I like for my dry winter skin. I also use Cetaphil body cleanser and body lotion. So far those are the only products that don't irritate my skin. I am not made for the desert.
I need to get something with some SPF. I don't burn or go outside much, so I am pretty lazy about sun protection on a daily basis.

I’m 36 with oily skin that is prone to breakouts (yes, still!). Here is what I use: Charcoal or baking soda-based cleanser (usually use one in the morning and the other at night, doesn’t matter which) Alcohol-free micellar water as a toner Moisturizer with 10% glycolic acid (+ oil-free SPF 50 sunscreen for the morning wash) Sometimes I’ll use Queen Helene’s mint julep mask or Aztec healing clay mask - they help to draw impurities out of the skin. I think you’d like the Aztec Secret clay better but I can’t for the life of me remember all the brand names of these products!!! [img src="http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/sad.png" alt=" " src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png" class="smile"] What benefits do you get from using the micelles water as a toner? Glycolic acid is a chemical exfoliate, right? If I'm wrong, how does it help your skin to have it in your moisturizer? I've never done a mask, period. My whole skin care routine has only ever consisted of cleaning my face and trying to moisturize it. Oh, and I discovered the wonders of exfoliation a few years ago, but I don't have that all the way together yet either. I'm obviously way behind, which is why I have so many questions now lol. Since I still have problems with oil and blemishes, my skin care routine is primarily aimed at reducing both of those things as much as possible.
I only found out a couple of years ago that alcohol-based toners and astringents are a HUGE no-no, as they break down the protective barrier the skin has to protect itself from bacteria and such. The alcohol will temporarily kill that bacteria and reduce oil but it leaves your skin even more open to bacteria. When I learned this, I ended up having to toss out the majority of my skin care products at that time. The micellar water (I use Garnier) draws the dirt and impurities out of my pores without damaging my skin's protective barrier. The lotion I use (Alpha Skin Care) does contain glycolic acid. In addition to the anti-aging skin benefits, it also helps control oil. Yes it's a chemical exfoliate - that's why I have to apply sunscreen afterward for my morning wash. Otherwise my skin will be more susceptible to sun damage than it would be had I not used the lotion. I use Coppertone Oil-Free Faces sunscreen... I love it because it's super light and has no smell. I only use the masks when I remember. I actually have 3 - the 2 I mentioned plus a peel-off charcoal mask. They all do the same thing - draw out impurities and/or reduce oil. Oh, and I exfoliate in the shower with St. Ives Apricot Scrub for acne-prone skin before I wash. I do all this and I STILL have to take BC pills to stay blemish free!

His father was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma in his lungs, which started on his face.
