Ahhhh the joys of getting older. I'm trying to up my game with taking care of my skin. My skin is dry and gets flaky if I don't stay on top of things. This winter seems to have been especially hard on my skin though.
I normally just use an oil on my face while it's still damp from cleansing. That's been working fine for me, but now I think I need to add a Moisturizer for at least a little while. What are your favorites? I think I want to start with a heavier one for nighttime and if necessary, add a lighter one for daytime use later. I want one with hyaluronic acid. Recommendations?
I've been reading about the wonders of vitamin C serums and I'm interested. If you use one, which one? They aren't exactly cheap and I don't want to waste a lot of money experimenting.
I've never used a toner, and I'm not sure it's necessary for me. If they are beneficial for you, tell me about it please.
Cleansers, I don't have any complaints about the one I use now, but if you use one that you love, I'd like to hear about it. Especially if it has mostly natural ingredients, I don't think my current one does.
Eye creams, do they even work? I have puffiness under my eyes and a bit of darker color. If you use an eye cream that has actually helped with either of those issues, please share!
I'm vain enough to be interested in delaying the signs of aging as much as possible. I already have 11's on my forehead, I frown a lot, even when nothing's wrong. I don't have acne and I don't get a lot of bumps, just very dry skin, which if I understand correctly, contributes to wrinkles.
So what's your skin care routine and what products do you use and love? The more "natural" the products are, the better!
Thanks in advance!

I use Mario Badescu glycolic cleanser and Murad age reforming day cream since I turned 45 or so. When I first started buying the Murad, it was around $22. Now it is $58.
I started using the Murad because at the time it was the only one with an SPF of 30. I am fair enough that I need coverage all the time. There are others on the market now, but I like the scentlessness of this Murad.
I usually buy both on sale sale when I run across them. I recently bought 3 moisturizers for $28 each. I found a similar sale for my face wash, so am good awhile.

I use this for night cream Burt's Bees It's been great for the last three years or so. On my last purchase, I actually switched to a different type of Burt's Bees night cream called Renewal Firming night cream and did not prefer that one; it was too greasy for me. It caused acne and my face was drying out. I didn't even finish it, which is unusual for me.
For regular lotion for my face--which is notorious for easily drying out, I use this facial lotion and also hydrating mask: Aveda
I try to do the mask at least once per week.
Good luck!

I like olay products. They are typically rated well. I have dry skin. I've used Cetaphil cleanser for dry skin for years. It is very gentle so I never have issues. Although lately I'm finding I need help exfoliating too, but it has to be very gentle and I'm not good about remembering to use them. I use olay with SPF every morning, and at night I just started olay regenerist which has hylauranic acid.
I've done microdermabrasion in the past but it is expensive. I just turned 37 and at thanksgiving this year my sister gave me the gift of a little botox. She's an MD and they offer that at the fancy place she works. She didn't do much on me, and said at about 3 months it would wear off. She says if I do it now I won't need much later since it will help prevent wrinkles. I can see the lines on my face again so thought about finding someone here that can do a treatment. I figure if I can squeeze a couple of freebies a year from my sister that I could pay for the rest.
I sometimes use masks at night or when I am deep conditioning my hair under a dryer, but I'm bad about this too. I listen to a beauty podcast called Fat Mascara. It's done by a couple of beauty editors that work at different magazines. They talk about Asian skin care routines a lot. Have you looked at Korean skin care products? Those are really popular. I just can't justify tons of money on stuff. Every time I've ever gone to get a facial they say my skin looks great so to keep doing what I am doing.

When it comes to fighting the aging process I'm actually more in favor of chemicals than all natural products . I use two products designed and sold by my dermatologist (but not prescription) and the others are over-the-counter. I am pale, with rosacea, and very dry skin. I have had great success keeping everything under control with this routine. Morning* Cetaphil cleanser - $9 * Smart Day Protection - $42 - dermatologyaffiliates.com/shop/smart-day-protection - SPF 50 Evening * Smart Start Retinol - $71 - dermatologyaffiliates.com/shop/smart-retinol - contains hyaluronic acid * Summer - Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer - $12 * Winter - Creamy Petroleum Jelly - $5

I’m 36 with oily skin that is prone to breakouts (yes, still!). Here is what I use: Charcoal or baking soda-based cleanser (usually use one in the morning and the other at night, doesn’t matter which) Alcohol-free micellar water as a toner Moisturizer with 10% glycolic acid (+ oil-free SPF 50 sunscreen for the morning wash) Sometimes I’ll use Queen Helene’s mint julep mask or Aztec healing clay mask - they help to draw impurities out of the skin. I think you’d like the Aztec Secret clay better but I can’t for the life of me remember all the brand names of these products!!!

The more "natural" the products are, the better! Thanks in advance! Hello, skincare issues twin. 1) What cleanser are you using? If you're getting flaky skin, might want to move to a gentler cleanser. I use cerave hydrating cleanser. 2) Eye gel - I use baebody. I have noticed a bit of a decrease in how much I look like I got punched in the eyes. It's cheap, so why not? 3) Hyaluronic acid - I use The Ordinary. I put it on as a serum before putting on my facial oil (have been digging rosehip oil) and my skin is the least dry it's ever been in winter since I was a teenager. The ordinary is so cheap! This product is so good! I buy like 4 of them at a time so I never run out! 4) Vit c is citric acid. It's going to dry out and exfoliate your skin, so think about how you want to use it in your routine. I only use antiaging products in the summer when my skin's not struggling so much to retain moisture, so your mileage may vary. 5) I had a facial last week and the facialist recommended that I use plain yogurt (not-greek, just plain yogurt) once a week as a "peel". It's lactic acid, but not a high concentration. Her recommendation was based on peeling off the dead skin so the moisturizer can penetrate deeper skin layers. Or something. Who knows, anyway I did it for the first time last night and I will say my skin is very soft today! My wrinkles also feel less prominent maybe? Someone told me I was glowing, so that's good. Anyway, that's my middling-natural skin lowdown. ETA: Toner. Facialist recommended using rosewater as a toner before and after the hyaluronic acid and rosehip oil. Something something seals it into your face something something. I don't really understand, but rosewater is again, pretty cheap, so I'll probably give it a shot.

I'm just now getting a chance to come back to this thread. My apologies for taking so long. The Walk of the Penguin Mich I've never heard of Mario Badescu and haven't paid much attention to Murad, I'll have to look into both of those brands. Thank you! Knee Deep in Water Chloe I tried one of Burt's Bees lip balms several years ago and had a reaction to it, tiny bumps all over my lips. I'd never had that happen before and it was not cute! I won't be trying any more of their products lol. I've heard that Aveda is good stuff, I'll check them out. Thanks! bobosensei I used an Olay oil-free Moisturizer for years and years. It never really helped my dry skin, I'm not sure why I kept using it lol. I've read good things about Olay Regenerist and said I was going to try that line, but I never did. Do you feel like the one you use at night is helping your skin? I know you said you only recently started using it. No, I haven't looked into Korean skin care products. When I was researching oils and butters to make my own body butters with, I discovered camellia oil, which was supposedly used by geishas on their hair and skin. Different place and culture, I know. But I am a fan of the oil. It's one of 2 that I regularly use on my face. gs11rmb I am hesitant to start using certain things without the guidance of a dermatologist and I've never been to one. I see that retinol is a pretty popular ingredient in skin care products, but that's one of the things I'd rather have guidance with than experiment on my own. Thanks for the info!

Glycolic acid is a chemical exfoliate, right? If I'm wrong, how does it help your skin to have it in your moisturizer? I've never done a mask, period. My whole skin care routine has only ever consisted of cleaning my face and trying to moisturize it. Oh, and I discovered the wonders of exfoliation a few years ago, but I don't have that all the way together yet either. I'm obviously way behind, which is why I have so many questions now lol.

Heyyyy Pants! 1. I've been using Philosophy Microdelivery exfoliating facial wash. It's suppose to be gentle enough to use every day, but I don't. When I use it regularly, I don't get the flaky skin. I alternate it with Noxzema (don't laugh, I've used it for as long as I can remember lol), and some mornings, just plain water, depending on what I used the night before. If I go too long without using the Philosophy, I use Neutrogena "deep clean invigorating foaming scrub" to exfoliate and wait a few more days before going back to the Philosophy. I've tried another Neutrogena scrub, but my skin didn't like it at all. My skin has always gotten flaky regardless of what cleanser I use (or don't). 2. Baebody eye gel, I'll have to see if I can find that, never heard of it. It's on my list now. Thanks. 3. The Ordinary, I've seen that brand mentioned in a good way somewhere. So you just use that and the rosehip oil, no Moisturizer like a cream or gel? Do you use these at night, in the morning, or both? 4. Warnings about vitamin C noted. Is that the anti aging product you use in the summer? If yes, do you have a specific product that you like and do you notice any real difference when you use it? 5. Yes, glowing is good! This "glow" is one of the things I'm after. Sounds like yogurt could be used in place of exfoliating, right? I've read that exfoliating helps whatever you apply next penetrate and work better. I've read that rose water is good for your face and hair. I don't remember exactly why either. If you try it, let me know what you think, please. Your natural skin lowdown was helpful. Thanks!

I have pretty bad insomnia, bad allergies and I think some of mine might also be hereditary, so it would probably take a miracle or surgery to get rid of mine completely. But I'll take even a little bit of help with it, if I can get it.

As far as "natural" products. Target has a good selection of Acure, I love their cleansers. Full-size are $10. They usually have trial sizes of some for $3, So affordable to try them out.
Another cleanser I really like is Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Cleansing Gel, which I use every day. It's more expensive at $38. It's got more chemicals in it, but I like it anyway.
Someone mentioned Olay Regenerist. I love their Whipped products. Target has trial sizes of those, too.

I'm madly noting down everything recommended here. At 59 I'm still trying to figure out a reasonable plan of care for my skin. It used to be very oily but is now, finally, "normal" I think. Wrinkles are emerging. I've been using a Retinol moisturizer every day but just wash my face with plain water otherwise. Time to step it up.

No. 7 has gotten excellent reviews whenever I read something about skin care. I know Target sells it and it is reasonably priced.
If one of my products became unavailable, I’d probably try this. Once I find something that works for me, it get very reluctant to switch as my skin hates a lot of stuff and I wind up going through a lot of $$ to find something that works. For years, I used Neutrogenia.

I've read that rose water is good for your face and hair. I don't remember exactly why either. If you try it, let me know what you think, please. Your natural skin lowdown was helpful. Thanks! 1) Hi, so ok, first things first: if you have dry skin, you are using way too many exfoliating and drying products. Noxema is extraordinarily drying. If you have dry skin and no issues with acne, you should be using a gentle exfoliator a couple times a week. I don't know the frequency you're using these products, but you're beating up your skin when you cleanse with exfoliators. Out of what you've said, that would be the #1 immediate change I would make. Exfoliate less. Less dryness. Less things you have to put on top to counteract the dryness. 2) Baebody gel I got off Amazon. 3) Yes, I just use the serum, eye gel and rosehip oil, twice a day. I've just started swimming again, so also putting oil on after rinsing my face after getting out of pool because chlorine is super drying. 4) The only vitamin C product I've found that I liked is crazy expensive, so I don't use that any more. For anti-aging I use The Ordinary Buffet. It's got... peptides? Look, I don't know what peptides are or what they do, but it says it's antiaging and it doesn't kill me with dryness, so that's what I use. 5) Yes, the yogurt is a substitute for a physical exfoliation product. I put it on like a mask and waited for it to dry, then rinsed off with warm water. Rosewater - I do have a rosewater spray that I use sometimes. It's the Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe and Rosewater. I've been spraying it before and after putting on my serum and oil. I haven't seen any difference positive or negative, but it's only been like, 3 days. TBD on that one.

Daily sunscreen is recommended by the experts. I've pretty much always worn sunscreen, especially on my face, to avoid sunburn. I never gave it much thought, but I'm frequently told I look young for my age, so now I think there might be something to it.
Regular sunscreens are too oily for me. So I use Bare Minerals bb primer with sunscreen every day.
Don't be afraid to try some of the expensive products. I've found with most of them a little goes a long way. If you have a Sephora nearby you should be able to get free samples. Other stores will give samples, too.

Pants I hear you on the cleansers. When I started using the Neutrogena scrub, I would use it maybe twice/week, if I even remembered to do it that often. Honestly, when I started using the Philosophy every 2 or 3 days (actually nights, to be more accurate) and using avocado or camellia oil immediately after, the dryness improved dramatically and the flakiness disappeared. As long as I was consistent, that is. Avocado oil seems heavier than the camellia and doesn't absorb as quickly, so I only use it at night, mostly in the winter. Noxema moisturizing cleansing cream on the nights I don't bother with the Philosophy. Water only in the mornings if I cleaned my skin the night before. Camellia oil immediately after. Once I started using the Philosophy, I stopped using the Neutrogena, unless I went a week or so without the Philosophy and started getting flaky again. Then I would wait a few more days before I started the Philosophy again. That's been my entire skin care routine for at least a year and more attention than I've ever paid to my skin. I've been happy with the results until recently, apart from wondering how best to address the under eye puffiness. Now my skin feels like it needs more moisture (I'm blaming it on the stupid weather we've had this winter), which is how I became interested in moisturizers with hyauloric acid. Looking into that made me start thinking that maybe it's time (past time, really) to consider an anti-aging skin care routine and down the rabbit hole I went. I got overwhelmed and decided to ask my YM peeps what they do for skin care. I'm sure it's obvious that I'm clueless, so thanks for taking the time to answer my questions and go into detail. I have to say you cracked me up with #4, the peptides. I appreciate everyone that has chimed in and shared information with me. It's a huge help. And I'm glad that someone else, finnime specifically, is getting some information that might be useful to her too.

I'm not afraid to try some expensive products, I just don't want to get stuck with something that doesn't work or worse and it was expensive to boot. I do have a Sephora nearby. I was just thinking last night that I should probably stop by and see about some samples. There's an Ulta near me too, I'm not sure if they are similar to Sephora with samples though. Thanks!

@pinkcshmere I do remember that my dermatologist told me to be careful with Retinol and start out very gently because it can be irritating for the skin. She recommended starting with an over the counter cream (RoC Retinol Correxion Night Cream) before working up to either dermatology creams or even prescription creams. When I first started I used a tiny amount every other day but now I can use the stronger one nightly without irritation.
The other thing she told me to do was only use it at night before bed. Retinol can cause your skin to burn more easily so you don't want to use it as part of your daytime routine.

Right, but the noxema. I think you would see a huge difference just swapping that out for say cetaphil or cerave or a comparable face wash.

I wash my face with soap and water. I use whatever moisturizer I find on sale, or even from the Dollar store. I was given a spectacularly expensive eye cream, ( $130 for a half ounce) but there was no difference between it and something from Dollarama.

I'm 72 have pretty good skin. I use Dove or Caress soap only. Some nights I will use some night repair stuff from Estee Lauder or Merle Norman, most nights I use nothing. I also got a $1 jar of crème from our family owned pharmacy, its as good as the expensive stuff. Sometimes I use it. Also doubles as hand crème.
For makeup, Merle Norman base. blush, MN powder, and Maybelline brow pencil. I have used Merle Norman products since I was 18. I would use their blush but went to powder, I like the crème better. And they had refillable brow pencils for years but they kept making them thinner and thinner to the point they would break while putting them in the holder, enough of that. Lipstick and that is it. I think you can use to much stuff. My DIL Is always cleansing and messing with her face, I think less would be better. If she just washed it and used a good quality base, her skin is fair and nice. I gave her a set of Merle Norman, it looked good and she liked it. But her friends in Korea made fun of her using old peoples stuff so she quit, her loss. When I was young I found to many products were worse for me. Probably what helps more then anything is continuing to take Premarin or hormones.

Lol! I also use Ceruve for face wash. I bought my daughters Philosophy cleansers, and they do like those.

With the clot issue last month, I stopped taking oral contraceptives. I was taking them primarily for clearing up my skin. Less than three weeks out from stopping the pill, my face started breaking out again. Sigh.
