They were killed for one reason and one reason only. They were women. Annual École Polytechnique memorial lights up Montreal sky in honour of 14 victims Hundreds of people braved the cold and snow to attend Montreal's annual memorial event honouring the 14 women who were killed at École Polytechnique on Dec. 6, 1989. Fourteen beams of light — one for each of the victims — illuminated the Montreal skyline between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/polytechnique-memorial-in-montreal-1.4934951

The École Polytechnique massacre, also known as the Montreal massacre, was a mass shooting at the École Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec, Canada that occurred on December 6, 1989. Twenty-five-year-old Marc Lépine, armed with a rifle and a hunting knife, shot 28 people, killing 14 women, before committing suicide. He began his attack by entering a classroom at the university, where he separated the male and female students. After claiming that he was "fighting feminism" and calling the women "a bunch of feminists," he shot all nine women in the room, killing six. He then moved through corridors, the cafeteria, and another classroom, specifically targeting women to shoot. Overall, he killed fourteen women and injured ten other women and four men in just under 20 minutes before turning the gun on himself. His suicide note claimed political motives and blamed feminists for ruining his life. The note included a list of 19 Quebec women whom Lépine considered to be feminists and apparently wished to kill. It is the deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89cole_Polytechnique_massacre

As I get older, twenty-nine years ago doesn't seem that long ago. I remember the day and event well.

Whoa! What a horrible event! But I love the memorial lights. Very cool/classy way to pay tribute.
