Three people are in critical condition, including a police officer, after a shooting Monday afternoon at Chicago's Mercy Hospital, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman said. The suspect was also shot and is in critical condition, spokesman Walter Schroeder said. The suspect has been identified as a 32-year-old male, according to a Chicago police source. www.cnn.com/2018/11/19/us/mercy-hospital-chicago-shooting/index.html

It's just domestic violence. It doesn't count as 'gun violence'. It's just something that happens (it's a guy's Biblical right to beat his woman (and children)). It's sad, but what can you do? People have every right to have/own guns. I'm sure it was the victims' fault, too.
I'm sure many thoughts and prayers were offered.
I think I covered all the bases?

... It's sad, but what can you do? People have every right to have/own guns. ... Not only have the right to bear arms but the right to use them, as a last resort of course, when necessary (in their minds).

As long as they are white... I don't think that race is an issue here. Americans of all colors have the Constitution right to bear arms. They have that right to allow themselves to defend themselves. People have different threats in mind when they think of using their guns. Some have them in case of tyrannical attempt by government to take their freedom. Some have them in case of threat to their life or possessions. And others have them in case of threat to their ego or self image. But they all have that right to use them as a last resort when they deem it necessary.

I have a right to kill someone because my ego is threatened? You have a Constitutional right to bear arms. Why? To defend yourself against threat. We all have boundaries for when a threat is sufficient to use that Constitutional protected right. Some people have boundaries we have determined they will face a consequence if they act using them.

I have a right to kill someone because my ego is threatened? Absolutely. Anytime anyone 'does you wrong' a gun can settle the matter and make things right.

I thought we had a Constitutional right to bear arms - to protect ourselves from our Government? I didn't think it was a right to defend ourselves from anything we perceived as a threat. Can a Shovel with an image of a gun painted on it be considered a gun? I'd love to be able to walk around with a shovel and threaten people with it - and even smack a few people in the head with it (Some would get a double tap - or a triple tap).

Stand your ground laws are an example of how your Constitutional Right plays out in everyday life. Society does attempt to draw lines of what is and isn't acceptable situations for use of your protected firearm. But just as we have disregarded that pesky little "well-regulated militia" part of the 2nd Amendment to make gun ownership an individual right, individuals have a tendency to operate on their individual interpretation of justifiable use.

The Pharmacy tech graduated from Lake Central Highschool in Dyer Indiana in 2012,which is about 20 miles west of our house. She was killed because she came down the elevator as he was shooting in the lobby when the elevator door opened. She had told her family she was so happy working there, she would even work there for free. The E.R. Doctor has roots in northwest Indiana. She spends some of her time in the emergency room in Michigan City Indiana about 12 miles northeast of me, as well as at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. She sang for five years in the choir of her brother's church where he is the Pastor in Laporte Indiana which is southeast a couple of miles from Michigan City.... The killer went to church with the doctor's family just this last Sunday even though she broke off their engagement a little over a month ago. The killer had issues that were well known in Chicago. He was dismissed from the Chicago Fire Academy because he had issues with female cadets, etc. It seems he went there with an intent, and he was demanding the return of the engagement ring....... This happened in the big city, but it is hitting families well beyond the city limits today.

The officer he shot and killed was not the first officer on the scene, but he responded to the active shooting and went straight into the lobby where he was shot and killed. Young man with two young children with only two years on the force. The shooter used a handgun and got off 30 rounds, before killing himself.

If it helped you, VB, it wasn't a waste. There's a pre-existing thread on this incident, however. That might be why the dearth of responses.

So tragic that these young lives and their potential were cut so short. I'm sure many, like in the cases of suicide, are thinking "what could I have done to prevent this."

I realize the article I quoted does not talk about the shooter, but he had a history of antagonizm (sp?) to women that was pretty well documented. Looks like the Doctor decided to get out before it went to far.

I can only imagine what the families and friends who lost loved ones to this atrocity are feeling. My heart goes out to them.

Thoughts and prayers.
Last week we had six shot at one time-two died.
Yesterday here, three men were found shot to death in the same parking lot.
It's an almost every day occurrance. Why is the hospital shooting any different than all the other mass shootings that get little to no attention here.

Not picking on you, but I did not see the original thread and wondered why it had not been posted. Turns out it was half way down the second page tonight, and I have not been on for a few days. That said, you can post these types of incidents here on the boards. That was what I did, because it hit me personally because although it happened in Chicago it affected several families in northwest Indiana in two different counties on a Holiday week celebrating Thanksgiving....... Remember my old Chicago killings thread? I posted that to show how bad it is in the cities....... An Emergency room doctor, a pharmacy tech Both getting off work and killed.....at a hospital which one can consider a safe environment... Plus a patrolman just doing what he is supposed to do......and expected to do....... Three extended families totally changed for life......

VB-I didn't mind you started a thread when an existing thread was already here. It happens often. No problem. My point is mass shootings are almost occurring weekly now. All the victims have family and friends who loved them. Many mass shootings don't get media attention outside of local news. It's the unusual places, place where we think are safe environments, where these mass shootings take place. This time it was a hospital. Hospitals are associated with healing and not mass shootings. When are we going to say 'Enough'? Are we to live with armed security at hospitals? At movie theaters? At schools, nightclubs, outdoor arenas, business offices, anywhere where people work, play, and learn. We are becoming prisoners within our own country with the need to be protected by armed guards. I'm rambling at this point. But when will we finally get tired of all this murder and maiming. When will we finally stand up and say enough be enough?

Why is the hospital shooting any different than all the other mass shootings that get little to no attention here. I think the diffrence is in the proximity for VB. It reminfds me of when my sons were little and I would read about an accident in which a child died. If that child was the same age and gender as mine it just seemed so much worse. That could have been MY CHILD! Logically I knew that a lack of similarities did not mean that my child was safe, but emotionally that just did not sink in. That little boy was (say) 8 years old and so was mine → ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod it could have been...
Knowing someone, or knowing someone who knows someone, geographic location, etc., makes it everything that much more real
