Ancestors.com is good, but they do have a charge for their services. They're connected to the Mormon church, so have access to their genealogical records which are probably the most complete of any. As an aside, I've used them and have never had any sort of solicitation to join the Mormon church, so I think the connection is tenuous, at best. They're just allowed to use the archives.

My family tree's been researched by other family members back several generations. A lot of missing slots were filled in by checking on Ancestry dotcom, but some records from the past weren't always kept too well, so there's still some tracking to be done.

I had a cousin on dad's side do the heavy lifting for us - he traced Memere's family back to the 1700s, and Pepere's family back to the 1600s in France. that sparked the interest for me, I've been trying to do the same for mom's side.
I've gotten some info from mom's side off of ancestry.com and have filled in some blanks with church records. neither side of my family has been in the US long - I think the oldest is only from the turn of the century ~1900.
if your family has stayed put for generations, and are linked to a church, you might want to start there. births and deaths used to be recorded in parish ledgers, and the records in some places were better than the official town or city records. good luck, it is fun when you actually find stuff.

My brother has a genealogy research business.
It is time consuming, can be very addicting. Check with your local libraries or community college. There are often classes on beginning genealogy, and if you are serious about it, I would think that would be an excellent start. The Church of Latter Day Saints, keeps extensive and excellent genealogical records, and it is possible you live in an area large enough to have a local LDS library. If you are serious, PM me, and I will see if I can put you in touch with my brother so you can ask some "getting started" questions if you want, I am sure he will be happy to point you in the right direction.

I have a brother who has done a good deal of this through various sources and traced my our mother's mother's family back through New Amsterdam (now New York) to Holland and part of my dad's family back to Germany on the early 1800s. Just remember all those blanks that can exist may be there because people lost touch back then or for a reason!

There is a DNA project...they can find all your roots from your blood sample. Damnit!!! After pouring through thousands of records & hundreds of hours of research, I find out that all I had to do was give someone a drop of blood & my genealogy chart??? Now I'm pissed!

I second USGenWeb and FamilySearch.org. I read recently in Family Tree Magazine that the latter has been redone and has more records available, but I haven't made time to check them out. You might also check with your local library to see if they have a subscription to Ancestry's Library edition. It's a little different, and I think you have to be AT the library to use it, but it's free! They also might have a subscription to Heritage Quest, which you can usually access from home through your library's website. Just remember, start with yourself, work backward, and always write down your sources if you want your research to be of any use to others.
