DH & I have been without health insurance since I got laid off in Nov 2008. I seem to recall that in that situation there is a period of time like 6 months or a year after you finally get insurance again where you are under a pre-existing condition sort of thing, and certain things would not be covered during that time period.
I have never been without health insurance before, so I don't know about this. It was just something I think I read at the time that Cobra was offered.
We didn't do cobra because it exceeded what my UE benefits were at the time. When insurance finally became available for DH at his old company, it was so expensive, we couldn't even afford to cover just him.
ETA: I meant to mention that with this new company he is with, it is available and more affordable.

Cheesy, call your state rep. Often the state has programs. PA has one little know programs for such cases.

Blue, we will be getting insurance here as soon as DH's probation period is up.
My question was about the pre-existing condition thing.

I have no idea. I went without insurance for two years after college and when I started my first professional job my insurance kicked in with no conditions.

This is correct, at least for 'stand alone' plans. It may or may not be different for group plans, however most I've belonged to do not use this as the plans are so large that there's enough people to spread the risk. It's particularly noteworthy for chronic conditions.
It does make sense, or healthy people would jump on and off health insurance just to get issues taken care of. I know that more than one person on other boards posted that they were going to use this tactic to pay for their pregnancies.
I also know that another woman on a hip group that I belong to was getting insurance after being without for an extended period, in order to pay for her hip replacement.

I have had coverage for 20 years now. DH started a new job last june and it had preexisting and again in Oct with his current job. I think it is 63 days without coverage where they will check, they did with me and we had to send them ID cards and everything.

Are you thinking for DH's newly diagnosed viral meningitis?
Does he have disability insurance?

Cheesy--it will probably depend on the insurance company. I was with one that would exclude pre-existing conditions for 1 year but held the right to refuse certain conditions forever. My dental was a year before it would cover more than a basic exam and cleaning. My latest, I believe, didn't have a pre-existing clause, but I joined them 10 years ago so I'm not positive.
