I've never even heard of putting marshmallows on sweet potatoes. Must be regional. Think of the core Thanksgiving sides: sweet potato casserole with marshmallows and canned cranberry sauce with wiggling rings still appetizingly intact are a sure bet. They're iconic! Classic! Traditional! Delicious? That's open for debate. Tracking down the origins of these mainstay Thanksgiving sides is as easy as saying "hard pass" when your family's legendary gelatin salad is handed around the table <snip> First, all you need to know about sweet potato casserole is that it was literally invented by the marshmallow lobby. And a century later, we're still playing into their fluffy, sugary hands. According to an article from Saveur Magazine documented by the Library of Congress, the first recipe of mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows dates to 1917, when "marketers of Angelus Marshmallows hired Janet McKenzie Hill, founder of the Boston Cooking School Magazine, to develop recipes for a booklet designed to encourage home cooks to embrace the candy as an everyday ingredient." www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/11/23/cranberry-sweet-potatoes-thanksgiving-explained/75912804/

I don't like sweet potatoes, though I've never tried them with marshmallows. That just seems like all kind of wrong

I like green bean casserole only one in the family that does as usual. Also sweet potatoes with marshmallows sometimes, and I love cranberry salad with jello, and orange, way to much sugar. Hubs and DD don't like those either, I sure grew up different I guess.

www.marthastewart.com/340211/green-bean-casseroleMy children like the concept of it, so I make it for thanksgiving. However, as I’ve been able to afford higher quality ingredients, I’ve used the above recipe for the past few years. I much prefer that version than the canned ingredients.

My XH’s girlfriend made the sweet potatoes with marshmallows, and my daughter tried to replicate them. I’m not a fan of marshmallow topping though.

My husband makes phenomenal cranberry sauces. One version he does with dark cherries. We live in an area that has many cranberry bogs, so we’re lucky to get fresh ones at thanksgiving.

I will eat most foods, there's not a lot I won't try and not a lot I don't like. DD is a typical one that was raised and had way to much fast food, mom worked and didn't have time to cook each night.
But at least she likes a lot of things like fried green tomatoes and chicken livers and gizzards so she got some of it right, LOL.

Gizzards and hearts are my comfort food...slowly stewed for hours with onion, garlic and rosemary.

I have a beef heart in the freezer now to fix. I like liver and onions but rarely have it, its so messy to cook though.
But chicken feet, anything like that and yes, chicken hearts. Mom even cooked the egg bag of the chicken in dumplings,
it was good.

We raised 400 broiler chickens every year and kept about 125 of them for ourselves.... my "assigned" parts were the drumsticks, gizzard and heart. Also love beef and pork liver. The one thing i mentally could never really enjoy was beef tongue....... tasting something that use to taste things...... just couldn't enjoy it. Thank god for lots of mustard to get me through it.

If loving green bean casserole is wrong, I don't want to be right.
I have a good palate and eat well most of the year. I can enjoy green and gray glop once a year.

I know you all hate the cream of glop soup, but I do love the pot roast gravy that you get from dumping a can of cream soup and a packet of dry onion soup on the roast. That's the way (uh-huh, uh-huh ♫) I like it! I make mine that way too.

I am not a fan of sweet potatoes. I like them even less with marshmallows. Sweet potatoes with marshmallows are common around here. Yuck.
I don't like things that confuse my tastebuds. (sweet and sour etc) LOL I am not very adventurous when it comes to food. I don't care for gourmet foods. I like things simple.
I prefer canned green beans. And cranberry sauce (not whole cranberries).

DS and I love green beans, but not canned. I lightly boil fresh green beans (al dente), then strain, and add butter and freshly -grated parmesan cheese. I tried canned green beans once. Never again.

Yeah, blue cheese and the like smell like stinky socks. It tastes worse than it smells. Stinky cheeses are quite delicious. As a kid I enjoyed trying new foods. I was eating escargot by the time I was eight years old or so. Still like them. I love bleu cheese, and I would totally make this. Thanks! And I knew I liked you for a reason, Tenn. I love snails, too. Not to mention all the garlic butter and bread on the side that's part of the deal, yanno.

Ours does that too! I like it because I am the only one who refuses to eat the canned stuff. I make my own fresh compote.

I prefer my green beans with butter only. But it would be cool to have something you created become big like that, I think. Peace. No butter, just a teeny bit of nutmeg and fresh green beans. That is the way they are supposed to be eatenWell, for you. I'm okay with that, as long as I don't have to eat them that way.

Another lover of green bean casserole here. I use cream of celery soup instead of mushroom, though.

Any recipe that includes a can of cream of barf soup is instantly rejected in my house. Those recipes are all gross.
