in their posts and responses...well to be honest...there are reasons for it....definitely in todays America...following is just one example...I will suggest just one of possible thousands being played out every day in the States in different forms. =========================== Hey Donald...: "T HIS IS WHY THEY KNEEL! I’m very vocal and always will be! You think racism does not exist, IT DOES!" ================================ www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/applebees-waitress-told-dont-tip-black-people-customers-091918091.html

Wow. Interesting that they could accept the work she did and the effort she made on their behalf, but they couldn't leave her a tip. -Jerks!

I've become skeptical about these notes left to restaurant servers. Too many have been proven to be written by the servers themselves. A need for attention I guess.
I have more faith in these incidents if management has thoroughly investigated the notes and comments and that they are the ones who take it public and not the server or their parent(s).

I agree, especialy when written on a blank sheet of paper, and not the actual bill, etc. Funny thing, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel Monday for lunch. Both of us had the daily special, the wife had free water and I had coffee. The bill was less than $14 with taxes. The service attention was beyond excellent. The young woman was black, probably early 20's. She made honest eye contact with both of us and was great. I have to say it was the best attention towards service we have received from a waitress in a couple of years especially considering our small order dollar wise. She brightened our day. I left an eight dollar cash tip. I never tip like that. Never. Did not leave a note telling her anything. We did thank her for good food and service when she left the bill. She just impressed both of us so much and made our day. This was not reported anywhere by anyone on the internet, so it probably never happened, lol. But now here it is and it did happen.

I think it could be easily proved by management, just have the server write the same message...might try but it is hard to fake handwriting...

We had a man come into our store and tell us he wanted to only purchase items that black people haven't touched. He didn't want to be waited on by any black people either. My manager told him that half the receiving crew is black, so perhaps we aren't the right store for him. I didn't witness it, just heard about it after the fact. I so wish I'd been there to give that guy a piece of my mind. This was just a couple of months ago. Yes, this stuff still happens in 2018!

VB. When I have a small bill and get great service it feels wrong to leave 20% or so. I had a $4 bill once and left a $3 tip. It was a small group meeting at a dinner we frequent and we were there a long time discussing things.

It was a small group meeting at a dinner we frequent and we were there a long time discussing things. Agreed. A $15 bill for lunch or breakfast requires a larger tip percentage. They work just as hard, or maybe even harder, than a $60 dinner tab where alcohol inflates the the total bill, so the tip has to be better than normal, but believe me, an eight dollar tip on a bill under $14 is not something I have ever done. I do not know what came over me! It did impress my wife. She said there is hope for me after all

If service is not up to par, I'll leave 10%. If it's good, then 20%. More if it's really great. And skin color has nothing to do with it. The overt racism that has been displayed again since Trump was elected disgusts me. I know we'll probably never eradicate it, but now the ones who've been hiding their racism have stopped hiding it again. If Trump can be openly racist, then it must be ok...🙄

This thread is about tips, and lack of one and racism. This situation of not tipping blacks has happend for decades before Trumpmania. As far as skin color having nothing to do with it, not sure why you say that, and then say it is racism. In my case, the waitress being black had nothing to do with my service. I mentioned it because acts of proper tipping never get reported in this sort of situation and I wanted to say it goes the positive way at times too.

Neither of us were claiming it happens a lot of times. but it does happen. I wouldn't suggest that it hasn't happened though I haven't read of any such happenings...S**t happens, we know that...but if it did happen, I WILL suggest it was a very isolated thing and trust me, I could add racial happenings to this thread as links just by those reported on different sites I visit... The fact is, the country is divided as never before not counting the "War Between The States"....and a major part of that division is racial and our current leader is doing nothing to try and heal that rift..if anything, just making it , the division, larger. Decades ago, when I returned from over seas , a cousin of mine, also a returned Vet. and I borrowed a trailer from his dad and took my truck and took two months going across country...camp grounds...seeing the country..from the Grand Canyon to Mt Rushmore and everything in between relaxing, unwinding, ...lots of fishing too with those guest licenses sold at corner small groceries... Had many a brew in local joints meeting folks..never met up with angry anti warfare folks...did meet up with many returned vets though..lots of binding, healing. In todays political climate, I don't believe I would do that trip today, considering my political outlook and so much of how certain parts of the country believe and who they support...I believe we are close to real war between ourselves...possible not real fighting but the hatred is real. [very sad and I do put much blame on our POTUS ..not all the blame but a lot of it]]

The first example was about a tip not given but the reason it was not given was definitely because of the race of the server.

Do you really want a discussion, or just another attaboy from your friends here? Getting back to racism in America.......over the years I too have driven through alt right wing territory and saw things that are wrong. Really cannot fight that fight in areas out of my state. As long as I do not belong to or back these groups privately or publicly and write my representatives on these and other issues, as well as vote in every election, I feel I am doing my part. Some might feel it is not enough, but I am not that much of a radical to show up on the sidewalk and shout down or spit at my opponents either.

deziloooooo and Value Buy - he is one example of a false claim from this past July. And to be clear, there are real and confirmed cases of servers being denied gratutities because of their race, gender, perceived religion, sexual orientation, etc. It's just that there are not that many of real and confirmed incidents in the first place and when it turns out the server falsified the event, it dilutes the real/confirmed cases percentage of true discrimination. Here is the July 2018 example: Waiter 'entirely fabricated' widely-reported racism claims

The largest (%) tip I ever left was when I paid $20 for an $8 lunch at Denny's. I was on a long road trip (this is not typically I place I like to eat) and right after I sat down a family with 9 kids were also seated in her area. And they had all kinds of demands. Yet she still managed to get me my food and coffee refill reasonably fast (or faster than a speeding bullet considering the circumstances) and she stayed pleasant throughout

It's not a poor example, VB, especially if the poster is unaware that some servers fake not being paid a gratuity for some bigotted reason. It is true we do not know if the server was telling the truth. The server could have been telling the truth for all we know. I just wish the powers that be who publish these types of stories would look into these claims before publishing these types of stories.

Let’s not forget about the races and genders who don’t tip at all. Or tip very little. That’s more prevalent than servers being mistreated because of their race. Leaving a religious tract instead of a tip isn’t cool.

Leaving a religious tract instead of a tip isn’t cool. what races don't tip? The Pentacostal Christian sect, Church Of God in Christ (COGIC), was founded here in Memphis. It is primarily African-American. For the longest time until very recently, COGIC held their annual convocation in Memphis. Headquarters are still in Memphis. I know several past and present restaurant servers who stated they and other restaurant servers around the city wanted time off during the convocation because many of the attendees were very poor tippers. Table meal totals of $250-$300 for a group meal might generate a total tip of maybe $10. COGIC moved their convocation to St. Louis (I believe) because they were not getting decent hotel room rates in our city. Restaurant servers were not sorry to see them leave.

We have restaurants here who won’t serve certain parties, mostly religious groups of all denominations because they tie up the tables forever, discuss things that upset other patrons, and don’t tip.
