Hello Everyone. Here is this month's Controlled/No Spend Thread as promised. Please post your goals for the month if you would like me to include them in the bi-Monthly update. For the new people there are no real set rules here, you set your own. The basic goal most if not all of us have are to keep track of the days we don't spend and hopefully by that work on saving money. Some are looking to put it into savings others to pay down debt. For some they only count the day as a no spend day if they spend nothing at all. Others will count it if they keep their total under $5. Some count all spending others only count a certain part of their budget. For example I personally take $400 out of the the bank in cash for everything that is not related to vehicle expenses (like gas, oil changes, insurance etc) or the house (mortgage, utilities, HOA) If I spend out of the $400 I count it as a spend day (although if it is less then $5 I usually count it as a no spend day.) You set your own rules. Any questions feel free to ask. You can post your no spend days daily or whenever you want, just put it in bold at the top with the first number being the number you want me to record. If you are doing daily then: Today (or yesterday) $0 Spend day More then one day at a time: 4/31 days $0 Spend Which translates into 4 out of 31 days in December have been no spend so far. Some use the bigger number as their goal number so do 4/15 No spend Days which means they have a goal of 15 no spend days this month.
CSD: Controlled Spend Day BFF: Best Friend Forever DH/DS/DD/DSS: Dear Husband, Dear Son Dear Daughter, fiance, boy friend, Dear Step-Son DIL, MIL, BIL, SIL: Daughter in law, Mother In Law, Brother in Law, Sister In Law NKCW: No Killing Co-Worker Day (could also be no kill DH NKDH etc) MOAN: Moving our a$$ Now aka exercising NS or NSD: No Spend or No Spend Day NEO: No eating out HTH: Hope This Helps KWIM: Know What I mean FWIW: For What It's Worth IMHO or IMO: In my Humble Opinion or In My Opinion Getting Nitzed is referring to when you have a long post and MSN cuts you off so its in two posts instead one. Having a Startsmart Day is referring to when you have 20+ things on your must get done in a day and you accomplish them. Sharing the Simple Lifestyle aka Toasty; Single Mom-KY aka Smokey; MittenKitten aka MK; Pt_In_NY aka Pointy; Red2Black aka R2B2. The Boy is Sheila in Cali's son. the boy or Mowgli is Nsinglet's son Blue is Red_Wagon's DH
For a while I was doing a Question of the Week. One week my question was "How has this thread changed your habits? What tangible benefits have you seen by being a member? I know we occassionally get someone on here that just doesn't get the concept of no spend is so much more then no spending 10 days to blow everything on day 11."
Honeylioness had a wonderful answer I think really defines WHAT we are about:
"I will admit that during my first two months of lurking, I wondered just how in the WORLD someone could not spend any money at ALL for 25 days? Did they just pay all their bills one day a month, and that same day do the food shopping for the month? Like many new to the concept I saw it as horribly, and restrictively, black or white – an opinion first based merely on the name of the thread.
But once I came to understand that it was not so totalitarian and was more about finding a way that worked for you to track your spending and any “leaks” in the wallet, it has felt more like a tool and less like a punishment. I wish I could say that I have paid off five extra years from the mortgage, or now have an EF of six months take home – but alas that would not be true.
What I do have however is a better awareness of where my “leaks” are, what are my hot buttons that make me want to spend on things I really don’t need or really cannot afford right now. And an awareness of the fact when I AM spending money. I think that awareness is key to learning a new behavior or paradigm. Just like lumberlady, some of us have had to look hard in the mirror and acknowledge that we had a problem. Until people can do that, be it an addiction to alcohol or drugs or credit cards ….. they will never really GET it."
Thanks Honeylioness!

Month End Update:
25 CSD 28 NEO
Okay, now to get caught up on some of my comments
sheila - Keeping good thoughts for your DH and this prospective job. I also don't "get" the mindset that thinks it would be "fun" or "cool" to vandalize someone else's property. Just yesterday there was a story about a historic graveyard where over 50 stones were toppled and/or broken. How sick do you have to be to think this is okay to do?
3cats - So good to "see" you. I hope you have been taking this vacation time to just rest and recharge.
startsmart - You know, no one would think less of you if you just slowed down once in a while, unplugged and/or just worked a 9 hour work day. Remember, one reason you might feel as though the one client is taking advantage is because you have not pointed out that the line in the sand is behind her. You really should not have to be "on call" 24/7.
mizbear - Sorry to hear that not only are you not feeling up to par but that the front office gave you the redcheck notice - If I was closer I would come over and give you a hand. But great job on your NS goals for the month!
reenee - Great news on the apartment! Have fun making it your own.
shanendoah - I will confess for being a sucker for the cats in shelters that are 6+ years old. The last few animals I have gotten that way have been in that age group. Partly because I know the odds against them and kittens always find homes.
dakota - The visual of Mini-D loving his new sheets gave me a well needed smile.
dianartermis - Congratulations on making goal!
ses - I am not looking forward to having to do the same thing when my mom is gone - as she is a hoarder, especially of paper. And I also want SPRING so I can plant in my garden. However this morning we awoke to a really crummy April Fools Joke - 4" of wet sloppy SNOW .... and it is still coming down!!!

Changing around my goals for the month - I want 26 NS/CSDs, at least 12 of which must be NSDs. I also hyave a goal of 12 MOANs - the two nights a week DH is in class and also one weekend morning, when I'm always up a couple hours before him. Since for me a CSD is a day on which I had planned to spend, this allows us 1 day a week for a spontaneous spend - going out to dinner, whatever.

Because of the way my goofy budget works right now- and I have budgeted all of my extras this month- bingo games, two nights out, some DVDs that are going back into the Disney vault, etc- I am shooting for 25 NSD. I know I will end up eating out with DM or DGM paying for it because that is how things work here. I am going to try and have 15 MOAN and make other 5 days CS- as I have an idea what I will be doing those days.
Honey- Thanks for the offer. That's sweet. The girl in the office told me this morning that they aren't worried about me except that I am disabled so if I fail x number inspections they have to put in an APS report on me and they knew I was sick, etc- the boss lady was frustrated because apparently there were major issues other places. She said the same thing I did- at least my place was clean. And the maintenance guys went out and got me the right filter for my vacuum! They are so sweet- I will have to bake them some cookies. Plus they found the filter on sale!

I need to be back in this month. I have to finish coming up with the $2500 I need to be able to pay my taxes. I am almost there but it will still put a small crimp in the budget for the month.
It's DS' birthday at the end of the month but we have his present basically already purchased (may need to buy that paint balls for his paint ball guns). I have a niece with a b-day this month too. But aside from those two things I am really hoping the month is nice and calm $ wise.
GOAL: 25 NSD, 25 NEO, 6 more lbs lost this month.

Honey - I definitely need lines in the sand, preferably a wall. This week I haven't worked much thanks to feeling like I'm dying. The worst part is while I can't sleep I'm also not tired during the day. Most of Thursday I watched tv and monitored email. Didn't really respond to anyone just watched to make sure nothing big got missed. Hopefully working from my office today and over the weekend means I'll get caught up by Monday. Hopefully.
Goals: 15 NSD - mostly to start tracking again. does not include gas purchases or paying my taxes or bills
Today's goal: Conquer email. In my 4 inboxes I have 43 + 81 + 40 + 14 = 178 emails to answer today. So. Much. Fun. Especially when one such email is directions to reschedule a days worth of appointments.

I was really upset yesterday and had forgotten my lunch so my DF and I went for a early dinner to sushi. Amazing sushi, best I have had in buffalo but not in the budget at all so we will not be having any meals out this month. Now, if only I can keep that attitude this month. The reason I was upset was I got a C on my midterm, and I needed a B. I need to make some changes, one of which is that I am quitting my job. I'm putting my two weeks in tomorrow. I was pretty sure I was going to do this anyway but was going to wait till the 8th. When I interviewed for this job I told them about my wedding and when it was. I also told them about needing to go back one more time. I asked about giving them the dates early and was told they did not have a system in place to take dates that early, just remind her. Then, I wanted to start school again, asked about moving down to 3 days or should I give my two weeks and was told it was no problem, then they made me work an extra 1.5 day right before my midterm and were not flexible at all, even though they said they would be. The reason for putting my two weeks in on the 8th was I talked to my boss about the days I need off to go home a month ago and she said she may not be able to give me that time off because those are blackout days. She needs to hire more people, two other people were hired with me, one was fired, and a current employee also quit, she has another employee who is pregnant as well. I am not getting bad grades or missing my wedding for a part time job, no way. But I will miss the money, sigh. Since August of last year I have made $14,000 that is going straight to the wedding fund. My goals for this month are 25 NSD and 5CSD.

I'm in for April
28 CSD/NSD 5 NEO 30 PT - MOANS (physical therapy exercises)
This will be tough - I'm traveling for work a lot this month, we already have stuff booked most weekends, and I have a ton of physical therapy exercises to do.
Today will be a spend day - I've got a bonus at work and I am going to use part of it to buy an iTouch. I've wanted one for a while - but had not saved up. But I'm going to use some of the windfall and enjoy it.

Here I am, coming to you live from my new place. I used my extra hour today to go to the grocery store (I know better than to come into a new place without a pack of TP, a roll of paper towels, and a pack of lightbulbs. am I the only one that leaves a partial roll of TP for the next tennant when you move? It's like the one thing everyone forgets. but I digress), move the absolute essentials into the house for the night, and take a nice relaxing bath.
For those of you scratching your head and going 'I thought she wasn't going to move until like Monday because she works all weekend'... I don't want to go into details, but I got into a screaming fight with my Aunt last night. I spent last night at my BFF's house on her floor, tonight I'm on my own floor. No furniture to speak of right now, but hopefully BFF, her hubby and I can fix that Sunday afternoon. Then I'll have a choice between the floor and the couch. LOL. One of my coworkers has a bed she's going to sell me super cheap, but it will be a couple of weeks before she can go get it (it's in her man's vacation house on the other side of the state right now. but I'm not going to complain about waiting for a $50 bed.)
So obviously money is tight this month, because essentially I have to come up with 3 rent payments in a row ($500 paid today for rent + partial deposit, $475 on the 15th for remaining deposit, and $525 for May rent on April 29th). I'm going to aim for 26 NSD, which allows me 2 spend days for each payday. Today was a spend day, and I need to pick up a few things tomorrow as well. Like a shower curtain.

Final update for March - 16 NSDsI am in for April as well. Just trying to aim for 15 or better. Currently looking for a bigger apartment before the baby gets here and am having no luck. The weather is causing people to stay put My Uncle is sick, has been for awhile, and it looks like he probably won't last the weekend. Do deaths really always come in threes? First Grandma and now this...when it rains it pours!

renee- HUGS! I am sooo sorry! HUGS! I wish I had more spare stuff and enough money to UPS it to you. If you need to vet, feel free to PM me- I know how frustrating family and moving can be. Happy birthday Honey (and everyone I may have missed) I am going to play bingo today- I paid for my ticket last month. You win prizes and I am hoping to win a nice bean pot or some candles or fragrance warmers.

Honey - Happy Birthday!! or (what the heck, it's your birthday, have both if you want) but try not to end up like this Miz Bear - Thanks. It's just frustrating to know that I really WASN'T in the wrong on this, but she's going to be stubborn and make everything difficult for a while. Which is sad, because I just got some very important information for her about getting her house and she won't stop acting like a child long enough to hear about it. First night in the apartment was ok. Either the insulation is really good or my neighbors are very quiet on Friday nights. I'll take either one. I've got a few more boxes I need to bring in from the car this morning, I should be able to empty most of them and use them again for the next trip. Two important things I noticed last night: There's a nice little space in my kitchen where I can eventually put one of those small chest freezers so I can stockpile; and I have a mostly-private patio that should be plenty big enough to do some container gardening. Veggies + Flowers = Pretty!!

I would like to join. I'm an active part of WIR Debt Racers West, and I think this board will be great in getting me to be more accountable to my spending.
My First Goal CS = 12 NS = 18 NEO = 28 (on my tab)

Honey - hope you have a lovely day and the girls help celebrate just how awesome you are! reenee- remember to check freecycle and craigslist for free furniture. at this point anyone with a truck is a friend today I'm staying home and cleaning up. I have 20 minutes to do something on my feet like move bookshelves or organize my guest room closet, then 40 minutes to sit and do something. Currently scanning pages I pulled from magazines and watching the Lion King I'll be back to the guest room soon. Still sick and achy but I slept pretty well last night. Had a very important conversation yesterday with someone, I think she'll be like a mentor. Really opened my eyes to some of the things going on at work and how I should change things. Going to talk with blue eyes about it and get a plan together.

I can't believe that it is "Already April" as well. I will be in again with a goal of 18 NS/CS days.
My current update: 0 NS and 2 CS days. I have no idea what today will bring but I do not plan to leave the house so it should be another NS day.
Renee -- Congrats on the new home Shan -- great news about Larry SES -- thanks for sending the book. I am enjoying looking through it and reading about the areas we will see this summer. mcreal -- Welcome to our group. Sometimes we move a little fast but hang in there and you will get to see that we feel that every aspect of our life is interconnected. What happens in our jobs, our families and with our friends will have some effect on how we view our finances. So if it seems that we get off topic at times don't worry we will loop around and get back on track. Our focus is to become aware of the little things that leak out. these include items like the coffee shop purchase, the grocery items that we just pick up without really needing, the unplanned drive-thru, etc.

Honey- Hope your special day was wonderful!
I'm glad you all are enjoying your Visitors guides
Shannen--Larry is adorable. I love the fact that you choose to give a harder to place adult "puppy" a chance to join a loving family.
Reenee--Congrats on having your own place. You have worked so hard on making this possible. Enjoy every moment.
Welcome, Mcreal! I looked at your amazing progress on the other thread. Almost $7000 paid off in one year!! How wonderful. As moneyaquirrel mentioned we tend to look at our financial lives as they integrate into the entirety of our lives. One of the things I did at the beginning was document every penny spent in a notebook in my purse I kept with me at all times. Keeping it at my fingertips made things more "real" than the same figures in the computer. The detailed documentation really helped plug leaks I didn't even know I had. Counting your NS days really helps when I am plodding along "one day at a time" Every journey starts with one step. Having your big picture in mind at all times is important, but it is the little daily steps that make the progress "real." We can give ourselves credit on a daily basis rather than having to wait for a monthly update. You have a lot on your plate, but never forget to give yourself credit for every positive move you make. This is a great group for positive support and feedback, and just a place to vent when you need it. Here's wishing you lots of positive progress.

Well, I have 2 NS, but I haven't decided how to classify the first- I knew it might be a CS since I was getting the kiddies. And I had a doctor's appt. But instead of things going as planned, I ended up taking them out to dinner and spending my EO/fun money (or the bulk of it) on feeding them at a restaurant. I guess since that money was already budgeted it is a NS, but I am still on the fence about that one. It also means that I probably won't get to go out now this month- but I wasn't supposed to have to feed the kids that night.

Please send all positive thoughts and prayers to my dear sorority sister who was in a horrific car accident on Friday. Below is a picture of her car - she is lucky to be alive but is still in serious condition and in a drug-induced coma and has a long road ahead of her.

SMKY - oh my! shocked that anyone could survive that!
It's Sunday, I slept until 11, did my grocery shopping and snagged the last 4 bags of chicken on sale, now home and trying to slog through 160 emails. I've given myself a deadline of 8 hours so if I'm not done by 9am - screw you guys, I'm going to bed.
I have coffee and the original star wars trilogy playing next to the computer. I can do this.

Today is my first NSD of the month! Woohoo, only the third day and I've got one! LOL. I still needed a few things when I moved in, so I posted a note at work with a list of the things I could use with the hope that I could find one or two things that were taking up space in someone's house. One of my dear coworkers, who had already pledged her couch and loveseat to the project, came through with a small table, two chairs, a cookie sheet, two skillets, a sauce pan, 3 mixing bowls, and a hand mixer!! Plus she loaned me their spare microwave that her husband usually takes to job sites for the crew's lunches... her daughter (who manages another apartment complex) has her eye out for a permanent microwave for me. I just was struck with a thought. Some of my younger coworkers have expressed a bit of awe and disbelief that I could be so calm and accepting of the idea that I might be sleeping on the floor (or the couch) for the forseeable future. And that I could "make do" with an apartment that's almost empty. Or that I would even consider moving before having everything I needed, even if I charged it. But the thing is, many of them would have turned down the hand mixer my coworker gave me today, it's probably as old as I am. I looked at it, chuckled to myself and thought "hey, it fits right in with the rust orange countertops!" as I put it away in the cupboard until I need it. But the woman who gave me all of these things told me that she was happy to give me anything she had surplus of that I needed, because she knew that I would happily use it, make it work, make it my own, and not be ashamed of turning second hand into treasure. My couches? Beautiful, in great shape, comfortable, they just need to be recovered. And she was excited to see the pretty fabrics I chose to make it new again. On that same vein, I've had so many people ask me if I had a TV or if I wanted one. And to all I've replied I can take it or leave it. No one can seem to understand that I don't really care that I won't have one. So I finally started telling people that I plan to buy one next black friday when they're super cheap. Who needs TV when I have you ladies and my sewing machine?

Smky: Yikes, lots of thoughts and prayers going her way. Was she alone in the vehicle?
reenee: People really don't understand not having a TV. The kids watch ours more then I do. Now I would be lost without my computer LOL
So I have a situation that I can do nothing about but it is irritating me. My DS#1 is best friends with the kid across the street. Kid is pretty good and I go walking with the mom when the weather is nice, BUT the parents are uber strict. Since it has been so nice out the mom has put the mandate out that the kids cannot go inside. So yesterday after DS's karate tournament his friend came over and we let him in. Anyways he was in our home less then 5 minutes and his pain in the butt brother comes over (they are 1 year apart in school and 2 in age) maybe to play but really to try to get his brother in trouble. So since I told him his brother was inside the little creap went tattling staight to mom. So she tells her son she can't play with DS for a week. So my son is now punished as he doesn't feel he can go play with the group of kids now since his friend is.
What I really hate is that there are double standards like no tomorrow. the brother is a middle child and just a pain. When they are supposed to be outside he gets irritated and goes storming inside, stays there for 10-15 minutes and nothing happens to him. Think typically whining middle child who runs whining to mom every time someone looks at him cross eyed, regardless of what he did to cause it. The sad part is his mom believes he is so picked on etc. I just want to tell the kid he is a mean spirited tattle tail but of course he will just go tattle to mom. I do think next time his brother comes over to play, if he tries to come over I am just going to tell him that DS can only have 1 friend over right now.
Thanks for letting me vent, now maybe I can get some sleep!
