During last week's discussion about a bill that would prohibit governments from deducting union dues from a worker's paycheck, Florida state Rep. Scott Randolph (D-Orlando), used his time during floor debate to argue that Republicans are against regulations -- except when it comes to the little guys, or serves their specific interests. At one point Randolph suggested that his wife "incorporate her uterus" to stop Republicans from pushing measures that would restrict abortions. Republicans, after all, wouldn't want to further regulate a Florida business. click the link for the rest of the story. ******************************************************* have we become so prudish that we cannot discuss body parts during legislative debate??

The problem was probably the fact that 'her uterus' made it sound like the woman might actually have some control over it or something... that thing should be called the fetal habitat... so we can recognize up front who it belongs too...

well - uterus is just a weird word, no matter what it means. Starts with a vowel, hard at the beginning, ends in "s" even though it is singular. The word is just badly crafted.

Democrats should know better than to say words their constituents do not know the meaning of. Which is most words, but I bet uterus really threw them for a loop.

This is like when they changed the pronounciation of the planet Uranus.

Well I never knew the pronunciation for Uranus had changed. What are folks calling it nowadays (I'm almost afraid to ask)?
Phonetically it was: Your Anus.
Then it was changed to: You a nus...

I know its totally off topic, but it reminds me, for middle school writing class today i asked the kids to have a passage from a book ready to share that showed good dialouge and my 12 year old chose the passage in one of the Percy Jackson books where the kids are at Hoover Dam and talking about going to the dam bathroom and buying a dam t-shirt... etc... etc...

"I'll be sure to use the correct pronunciation at all the finer cocktail parties"
I used to pronounce calendula ... cal en doo la. A 'friend' pointed out that its ca lan du la (the dangers of reading more than conversing i guess..)
I corrected myself... but a few months later when she suggested that it was 'un deeve' ... I was like ... no... its en dive... I didn't say 'you pretentious bi!ch,' ... but i think maybe my voice implied it... we aren't really 'friends' anymore...

Oh, and I didn't say "You uneducated moron" - but my voice must have implied it. (Just kidding - I'm sure if you and I ever met in real life I would be both the uneducated moron and the pretentious bitch. What a horrible combination!)

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

The pronunciation of Uranus wasn't changed. The word comes from the Greek ouranos, who was the sky god. The accent is on the first syllable in Greek; however, most three syllable words in the English language have the accent on the second syllable. The common English pronunciation of the word is based on what we're accustomed to hearing, not on the original pronunciation of the word.

I wonder if the 'pubs know what it means.

I looked up endive... both are possible pronunciations... but mine is listed first .... and that's how my gramma always said it... so that's the way it is... Calendula is the proper name for pot marigold... it makes a great salve for skin... Its my fav, and i grow a whole bed of it...

Endive is pretty bitter. My grandparents ate it, or young dandolion leaves, with a 'hot bacon dressing'... (I'm in PA, and its a PA Dutch thing... ) which sounds absolutely awful... and actually can be... but when gramma made it (usually with pig stomach.... yum...) lol...
