I had to look up the term "Pack and Play". I had something very similar when my kids were babies. (Back then it was called a "port-a-crib"). It got used a LOT! I took it most everywhere we went except for short outings. After they outgrew it, I kept it for a number of years because it was so handy when friends with babies came over.
When the g'kids came along, I purchased one along with a highchair. Both got used (at my house) a lot.

You are in NY, so the answer is "lots more than anyone else would deem reasonable".
...:::"Take 2 bags/boxes of diapers and call it good. Or a gift card for 35-40 bucks at a Babies R Us.":::...
Good advice. Diapers are the "go to" gift around here, and they are always usable.
I'm the type who would buy the best if it is something I would get a lot of use out of. IMO, a good stroller is probably well worth a few hundred. But babies can be changed on the floor.

Oreo and kgb nailed it.
We did opt for a changing table, mainly because DH really wanted one. It gets a ton of use and when we're done with it, we'll either repurpose it for gardening stuff or pass it on to someone else.
We didn't buy a pack n play. Instead we 'inherited' 3 from different family/friends. I did just return one, as my cousin is pregnant again and needs it. But we love them. Both kids still nap in the them 1 day a week at my mom's house (we're working on Mom and DD to get her out of it.) And DS sleeps in one at night when we go up on vacation.

I love my changing table. I tried changing her "anywhere" and it was killing my back. When I switched to using a changing table my back pain went away. We just bought a used one at the Salvation Army and I repainted it to match her room. $22.
If we could have afforded it what I REALLY would have liked is one of those dressers that opens into a changing table on top, then we could have killed two furniture birds with one stone. Those dresses are NICE and would last her well past babyhood.

And MIL was adamant about us getting one, so we just let her buy it for us - less than $100.

I was looking at one at Babys R Us. It was really nice but WAAAY out of our price range. I also liked one at Nebraska Furniture Mart.
We ended up with a cheap lingere dresser from K-mart for $49. It serves our needs just fine right now when combined with the closet.
We are going to get a bigger dresser for her when we move the changing table out.

DH built a changing table for when our DD was born. He made it to the exact height that was comfortable for me to change her without having to bend. It did have two shelves on it under the top where the baby lied to get changed. I used the shelves to store all the diapers and assorted stuff that goes with it. The other shelf I put clothes out for the week. One one side I hung a bag for dirty diapers and the other side had a bag for dirty clothes. I didn't want a diaper pail. Who wants dirty diapers hanging around any longer than necessary?

We have a little garbage can with a push lid that we put wet diapers in. We line it with a plastic grocery bag and just tie it off. Poopy diapers go in the regular garbage to be taken out that night. I thought about a Diaper Genie, but when I saw how much the inserts cost.. . no thank you.

"we already have 2 registries under our name:" wow... What can I say, my wife is an over achiever ;D Full disclosure, we had a pregnancy scare last year and she thought she might have been pregnant; and decided to start a registry.

She wasn't even sure she was pregnant but went ahead and created two registeries and you are laughing at your cousin who has a $600 jogging stroller on hers?
Interesting perspective.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. This fits so well with how you describe your wife. I bet there were a few things on there for Mommy too.
Have you discussed whether she is going to get a push-present and/or a babymoon?
I always wondered whether you could use cat litter for dirty diapers.

Interesting perspective. My wife is weird/nuts and she knows it She loves planning ahead, she was telling me the other what our house should be like : 3 bedroom, finish basement, etc. She has always been like that, she daydreams about the future and what she needs. Ex, we are moving this june and my wife already figured out how everything is going to be set up in our future aparmtment, down to where we are putting our dog bed.

I meant that MIL was adamant about us having a changing table in some form, so she bought it for us for I believe $80. We bought a nice-sized dresser for under $100 and the crib for $150. All from Ikea. Granted it all has to be assembled, but that's what DH is for.
