Plausible. There is a quote from Destination Truth that is appropriate. When I can recall it. The program did investigate the tiger.

Really? You think shapeshifting is "plausible"?

my thoughts exactly.
I think it's plausible that they really did believe it was a shape shifter, not that it really was one.

Well, there were Americans who thought Obama was a shape shifter, so nothing surprises me any more.

Not surprising, really. Even in the cities superstitions persist. My driver used to honk the horn before we drove across a bridge. I noticed it always happened, so asked him why. It seems if someone died on a bridge their spirit cannot move on and haunts the bridge. One doesn't want to hit the spirit. That's killing somebody twice! Ummm, yeah.

They wanted to build a palliative care unit in Vancouver. The wealthy Chinese condo-owners close-by blocked it. They didn't want to be bothered by ghosts. I can't believe the city gave in.

Given what I've seen and heard about the ability of tigers to disappear in foliage or dappled light, I'm not at all surprised that someone would believe it was a shapeshifter. The way that they can disappear by moving three yards is downright spooky.
It would not surprise me at all if the same word were used to describe the beast and the haint. It seems quite logical to me, even though I don't believe in haints.

deer "disappear" by taking three steps into the woods. It's an evolutionary protection, not magic.

Big cats do "disappear" better than antelope. There are logical reasons why and how, but it's still highly unsettling.

Lots and lots of people are superstitious. The need to be able to control the unknown or the unpredictable is part of human nature. Heck, even me - a skeptical atheist (who can insure that NO paranormal activity will occur with 30 yards of me - hee hee hee I'm 100% natural ghost repellant!) has a "Luck Shrine" at work with more than a dozen lucky charms/symbols/things in it. I'll do just about anything to insure I get that one page report printed that I absolutely NEED without spending 20 minutes mucking around with the printer/paper/toner/my coworkers/the Bad Karma cloud that hangs over me. It shoudl NOT take 20 minutes to get one page printed. It's the freaking 21st Century.

You look at her sitting there, her green eyes bathing you in a baleful glare, you look away, you look back and she's vanished and a minute later you realize she hasn't moved at all.. she's right there. I swear she always "rolls a 20" on her hide checks.

haapai is absolutely right: we can't blame the villagers. They've been terrorized by the uncia for so long they can't tell a mountain lion from a housecat. All they knew is that the big spotted creatures bring death, and when they saw a tiger that resembled the monsters plaguing them--under a porch, it says, possibly at night, with poor visibility--they took no chances. They rallied and took their vengeance. Only it turned out they claimed the life of a beautiful tiger and not that of a vile uncian. The "shapeshifting" probably came in because at some point the attackers believed and claimed the tiger was an uncian. That's what they thought they were killing. When they discovered it was a tiger, they claimed the uncian had polymorphed into a tiger before it died. Possibly because they felt guilt, or possibly they feared the consequences of killing a tiger. In any case, the uncia aren't able to polymorph. As Weltz says, that's just foolish superstition.

There are plenty of superstitions in real life. Maybe most people are only part serious. No one wants to be on the 13th floor of a building.
One time I was assigned to room 664 of a hotel. It was next to room 666. I was ok, but if I heard one add noise from there I was heading to the front desk. It was fine.

I wouldn't mind being on the 13th floor. I also deliberately chose my cellphone number because it had 666 in it. I thought it was funny.
