Satire from The Borowitz Report Betsy DeVos Calls “60 Minutes” a Waste of a Half HourBy Andy Borowitz WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Furious about her treatment on the CBS news-magazine program on Sunday night, Betsy DeVos spoke to reporters on Monday, and called “60 Minutes” a “total waste of a half hour.” “I had never watched ‘60 Minutes’ before, but I can tell you this, I will never watch it again,” the Education Secretary said. “I have better things to do with a half hour of my time.” Calling her interviewer, Lesley Stahl, a practitioner of “gotcha journalism at its worst,” DeVos said that it was “very unfair of her to ask me so many questions about education.” Complete article here: Betsy DeVos Calls “60 Minutes” a Waste of a Half Hour

So basically don't ask the Education Secretary about education, okay how about what's your next job going be?

Lol. I think I should go watch the interview now. You really should. It was right up there with Sarah Palin's interview when she (Sarah) was asked which newspapers she read.

She wants to pull funds from public schools in favour of charter schools, Here's the problem.... Charters are public schools, funded by taxpayers and widely promoted as open to all. But Reuters has found that across the United States, charters aggressively screen student applicants, assessing their academic records, parental support, disciplinary history, motivation, special needs and even their citizenship, sometimes in violation of state and federal law. www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-charters-admissions/special-report-class-struggle-how-charter-schools-get-students-they-want-idUSBRE91E0HF20130216They get to pick and choose which students they want. They don't want kids with poorer grades or disciplinary issues. What happens to the kids who are struggling, but could still make it with concerned and involved teachers? They lose, as more funding is yanked. They sink even further, and face a life with no future. I guess these kids are dispensable.

Is that a sexual reference? Because I am as far from a fan of Betsy Devos as you'll ever find, but that's completely inappropriate. Would you make the same comment about Rex Tillerson?
There are more than enough aspects of her experience, philosophy, and qualifications with which to find fault without making things up (reply #8) or insinuating that she's sleeping with Trump (reply #10).
Do better.

As Secretary of Education, isn't it her JOB to visit struggling public schools? Take stock of what they need and what improvements should be made? No, she just wants to cut funding.

Regarding Sec Tillerson...he has had a illustrious career before entering public service...my only problem with the man, once our Donald undermined him and publicly dissed him...that he didn't RESPECTFULLY offer his resignation, realizing his efficiency in his position was no longer possible...the mans reputation was firmly confirmed..surly didn't need the income... "When Tillerson left the company, he walked away with a $180 million retirement payment. According to CelebrityNetWorth, as of June 2017, the former Exxon-Mobil executive’s net worth is $300 million." Once he realized the make up of his boss...to stay....bad mistake..IMHO of course.

Stopped in to get directions or something, not realizing she's in a public school. Here is the exchange that took place on the show: Betsy DeVos: Michigan schools need to do better. There is no doubt about it.
Lesley Stahl: Have you seen the really bad schools? Maybe try to figure out what they're doing?
Betsy DeVos: I have not-- I have not-- I have not intentionally visited schools that are underperforming.
Lesley Stahl: Maybe you should.
Betsy DeVos: Maybe I should. Yes.
link What she is admitting, IM(not so)HO is that she has never said, "Staff, identify for me an underperforming school so I can visit it to examine it firsthand." First off, "Yeah lady, before you shoot your mouth off, you should." But also here is where I have a problem with the quoted post: Public schools are not the same as underperforming schools.

So its better to take resources away from kids who can succeed with less support? So play to the lowest common denominator is your interpretation of quality education? No wonder our public schools are shit.

They lose, as more funding is yanked. They sink even further, and face a life with no future. I guess these kids are dispensable. I live in a place where we have a lot of charter schools, along with open enrollment. Not only have I seen the rigged selection process, but (more so) the process of treating undesirable students and their families like shit until they decide to go elsewhere. I know of several people who used lawyers to demand what is required by law after months of failed meetings and discussions with the schools. Unfortunately, the kids who are most at risk don't have parents who are able to navigate the tricky system. I think of how many resources (brains, money, information, doctors, lawyers, language, outside testing, etc) that my friends have had to use to get their kid a proper education. The kids that need the most help are falling through the cracks of charters even worse than ever. We need them educated so we can keep them out of jail, or off the streets, or employed.
