You really don’t see the difference? The speed limit on my local highways is 55. People regularly drive 75-80 and rarely get tickets. If I’m following the law and driving 55, should the cops be able to pull me over and ticket me just because people get away with speeding every day? |

Sanctuary doesn’t shield anybody from E-verify. You can speak absolutely fluent English, be as white as snow, I can still check your SS validity if you come looking for a job. What if you are a wanted individual on the 10 most wanted list? Sanctuary laws are saying that immigration agents can’t pick up a guy and throw him in jail because he entered illegally. Basically the law denies acces to immigration officers inside the city limits. Only is such an individual is arrested for a different reason then they can intervene and deport after due process is completed. In all honesty it is a very weird, twisted law but it seems to work and gives some illegal aliens some breathing room. Nothing wrong with that! |

I'm confused. in MA, where I live, anything related to "sanctuary" status has been at the city level. it isn't state level, no matter what the current mayor of Boston might think. so I'm not sure on what legs the question raised by the OP might stand.
are things different around the country? I honestly don't know.

Sanctuary cities limit the use of local personnel and agencies in the enforcement of immigration law. It is neither their function nor their duty, and there is disagreement on whether immigration enforcement by local agencies is even constitutional. There is nothing in or about a sanctuary city that prevents federal agents from apprehending and subsequently deporting illegal aliens. It simply must be federal agents, not local personnel, that do so. |

Nothing wrong with that!I disagree. Would you want someone that broke into your home to have some "breathing room"? Or would you expect the ability to call the police and have the hauled away?
Illegals are by criminals. The fact that the liberals want to protect them absolutely blows my mind.

No point in disagreeing with him. He is wrong on what sanctuary cities are. Nothing about any of these laws would prevent someone who broke into your home from being arrested and hauled away. Nor would they prevent federal officials from showing up and detaining an arrestee who was illegal, as long as they show up on time. They DO prevent local officials from detaining someone BEYOND their regular release time simply to allow immigration officers more time to do their jobs. If the feds consider detaining illegals that much of a priority, show up on time and do your jobs. The idea that liberals want to protect criminals is silly. There are several other priorities at issue. Public health is affected if people do not go to hospitals for fear of apprehension. Criminals go free if witnesses do not show up for fear of deportation. Local law enforcement are not able to do their own jobs if they are tasked with immigration enforcement, not to mention that such enforcement by local agencies is arguably unconstitutional. It is not a simple issue. I am on record here many times saying that every person here illegally should be deported, and I still support sanctuary city laws because of the other implications previously described. |

I can understand what you are saying. I liken it to my approach with my daughter and her friends with underage drinking. I always told them if I caught any of them drinking I was kicking their ass but if they were ever at and not able to drive, they were to call me with no questions asked and it would go no further. I would never want any of them to attempt to drive home just so they didn't get in trouble. And God bless if I ever caught one of them drinking and driving...they wouldn't know what the hell hit them!
But the invasion of illegals is much more severe (imho). We can't just give people a pass. We need to crack down hard and prevent further invasion of our country. I've seen the speeches given by the mayors of some of these towns. It goes beyond a public health issue. They are being told they are welcome and safe there. That pisses me off beyond belief.

There was another thread about this in which I quoted the relevant parts of the law. It is not as bad as it sounds. Still, I agree that it is an overreach to prohibit employers from cooperating. |
