From the article: Emergency alerts sent to the cellphones of Hawaii residents Saturday warning of a “ballistic missile threat” were a false alarm reportedly sent by mistake, officials said.
Shortly after 8 a.m. local time Saturday, several alarmed Hawaii residents began posting screenshots of alerts they had received, reading: “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”
The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency tweeted at 8:20 a.m. local time that there was no missile threat to the state. The U.S. Navy also confirmed in an email the emergency alerts had been sent in error.
“USPACOM has detected no ballistic missile threat to Hawaii,” Cmdr. Dave Benham, a spokesman for U.S. Pacific Command, said in an email. “Earlier message was sent in error. State of Hawaii will send out a correction message as soon as possible.”

Wouldn’t recommend doing it on purpose but they should study what people did when they got the alert. Depending where I was at I may have broken in somewhere to get in a basement.

This dovetails to my million dollar idea----portable fallout shelter!

If they would have had the same reaction that I might have had, then there is a lot of extra laundry to be done today.

There's no place to run to in Hawaii, unless you make it to the caves. If you get one of those messages, & it's for real, all you'd probably have time to do is KYA good-bye...

There is a lot you can do to stay alive if you aren’t at ground zero, it really should still be taught in school and other places. A lot of people died in Japan because they didn’t get inside and drank the rainwater. “The simplest of the warnings is: "Don’t run. Get inside." Sheltering in place, beneath as many layers of protection as possible, is the best way to avoid the radiation that would follow a nuclear detonation.” www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/amp/don-t-run-get-inside-public-need-know-how-respond-n750466

In Indiana Jones, Indy survived one by hiding in a big freezer, so it can be done. Also, in 24, Jack Bauer survived one by rolling down the opposite side of the mountain that the nuke hit and I am pretty sure there are mountains in Hawaii.....

I don't understandards why it took 38 minutes to send a correcting message?? I agree. I'm a ham radio operator and involved with emergency communications at many levels. Their system is new so I hope they learned from this.

FFS, really? If this is how easy it was it was a matter of when this mistake would be made not if. “Someone clicked the wrong thing on the computer,” he said. “It was erroneous.” Mr. Rapoza said a new procedure was put in place hours after the mistake requiring two-step authentication before any such alert is sent out.” www.google.com/amp/s/mobile.nytimes.com/2018/01/13/us/hawaii-missile.amp.html

I imagine some were sleeping in and missed it, but oh boy............ Not easy to do if you have a cell phone. I have a lot of family on Oahu and the Big Island and the alert went out on the cell phones like an Amber Alert...as in really loud and obnoxious. My aunt is pretty laid back. She figured there was nothing she could do and they'd probably miss anyhow, so she tried to go back to sleep, but all her kids and grandkids started calling. My cousin works at Kualoa Ranch and they funneled all the tourists and area residents into the bunker there. There is a tunnel going through the mountain on their property. He said people were climbing the fences to get on the private property so they just opened the gate and let them in.

There are, but it's only a 12 minute missile flight from NK to Hawaii. Not a lot of time to get anywhere and if being on the other side of the mountains would be helpful, what side do you pick??

You drive to the top of the mountain and watch which side the missile strikes, then do a combat roll down the opposite side (that's pretty much what Jack Bauer did in that episode of 24). Easy peasy
