Spent money on necessities over the weekend, but saved wherever I could: ~Used a BBB coupon and saved $10 ~Used a $3.95 rewards coupon at Office Depot. I will have $16 in future rewards because of the recycled ink cartridges I brought in. ~Bought 3 books at an actual brick and mortar bookstore (!), two of which were on clearance. Saved at least $20. ~Went major clothes shopping for the first time in 15+ years. The first place was at a store which is closing it's doors nationwide. Saved 20% off all items except for one, which was 30% off. The next store was also having a sale, and my scores included a pair of slacks for $9.99, and several buy one get one 50% off items. Went to a third store because I had a coupon. Saw nothing I liked, and exited without buying anything. ~Used a coupon for free bread sticks at our favorite take and bake pizza place. ~Avoided going to Sam's Club for another month. I have spent wayyyyy too much money again this month buying food and stocking up. I do need to buy a bit of fresh produce tonight, however. ~Comparison shopped for toner for the office. A new cartridge is $192 at Office Depot!!!!! I can buy it refurbished from them online at $75, or via Sam's Club online at $29. Sheesh what a difference.

We spent $50 on flowers to plant today at Home Depot and used a $5/$50 coupon. Does that count? We spent exactly $50.74 before tax, which hardly every happens to me. I either have to run get something to get the total over or it is already way over.
I saw a book on sale at Amazon that I wanted to read for 99 cents. Then I checked the library, and, yes, they have the electronic version.

We didn't do well today. DD and I went out for brunch, she paid this time, was about $45 with tip, we went to Red Lobster. Then we went to the show. I paid for renewal of my rewards deal and the show, its worth it, but with that $15, it was $38, saw Rampage in 3D so that was extra. We shared an icy and she got some Reeses pieces so another $11, need to take candy, but didn't this time. Went to the mall but all I got were some sachets on sale for 20% off at Carson's so about $7, it is going out of business too.We hadn't been to a show in some time, way to much money but we had fun.
I bought a vintage cornflower blue electric skillet for $29 off ebay, I have all kinds of pieces of that stuff, shipping was high, but I have enough reward dollars to pay for it from MasterCard, so no direct costs.

Doesn't look like I'm controlling things well, just saw cable/internet/phone bill shot up to $210 and last month I had gotten it down quite a bit. And of course the system is down and we can't get in to see what is going on.I sure hate to but hubs said drop the damn cable, we will keep internet and our landline. I'm about ready too but we both enjoy watching TV and he likes the news as we live in the country and not much else. But that is getting ridiculous so we will end up pulling the plug sooner or later I guess. Got blocked out of another bank account, primarily hubs so need to get him in here to get into it. I didn't think I tried signing in to many times but must have. On the light bill got off auto pay and not get a paper bill. If you don't do autopay can't see the bill online, and like frontier am on auto pay and can't sign in to see it. Just fuming today.

Drop the cable! You can get the news and many tv stations via the Internet. Go to the website. In Indy, for instance, all the local stations have news live streaming or on-demand any time you like. Other stations like CBS have the shows on their website.

I went to it, got the cable to drop over $40. Landline is $67, internet is $25, the rest is cable. I went ala carte last time and that runs the price up apparently, so changed that. We can drop Starz and HBO and get it to $72, now its $89, so better. I know our son watches TV hooked up to his computer but seems like he has to mess with it a lot, not sure I want to do that. We have talked about dropping our landline but our phones don't always work well out here. We will eventually drop it I think. There will be better alternatives for us at some point.

If you have a smart tv or streaming device like Roku you don't even need the computer.

If you’re thinking of going the antenna route, check out antennaweb.org. Put in your address and they’ll tell you if you can get any over the air channels. I know you live a distance from town, but I’m amazed at the channels we get with our antenna and where the signal is coming from. 2+ hour drive in one case)

I do a lot of cross stitching and I went to Hobby Lobby today to get some floss/thread. I have been looking at a kit for several months and just couldn't bring myself to spend $60 for it. Today is was on sale for $15 ........... and I grabbed it. I know I spent funds that were un-necessary but this will be a Christmas gift for DH when it's finished. It's a copy of a partially destroyed painting that resides in a monastery in Greece. WooHoo ........ yea for me

They only cost about $20 and work a lot better than you would think. No monthly fees, either. Ours has a better picture than cable ever did.

Changed our trash pickup service from weekly to monthly. The change includes a larger trash container (95 gallon versus 65 gallon) and the new service will cost us $11.85 less per month. Recycling pickup is included in the monthly charge and is picked up every two weeks. I wish I had thought about changing our service months ago (sigh).

I mentioned my dead radio/CD player earlier in the thread. I went to SVDP and they still wanted $15 for a CD player that was sticky to the touch (seriously, I had to wipe my finger on my jeans and then couldn't wait to wash whatever it was off). I passed. My son pretty much gutted his room the last couple days, and had a small radio/cassette player he wanted to get rid of (his CD player didn't work anymore). So, I took it I junked my old one (it still played CDs, but skipped horribly, the radio no longer worked). I have radio while I shower again, for $0!

Since you found one that works, just file this away for future reference. - Alcohol (the rubbing variety) gets rid of the sticky. I had remotes that I couldn't stand to touch. It really works.
- You can get a nice cd player/radio for about $10 on places like the Trading Sites. I got one for my classroom. Sometimes I play the CD version of something we are reading. I can use the computer, but I like to be in the front of the room facing the kids.
Still free is always better.

I bought a new Kindle Fire today. The school reclaimed our Ipads. They were old . . . maybe 1st generation or 2nd. Apple would not be updating the operating system, and the IT dept. said they were slowing the network. We all have Chromebooks plus desktops. To be truthful, I used it only at home to play games and read with the Kindle app. I had a 1st generation Fire. The charger won't stay in the port. I checked, and this is a known defect. The solution is to buy a new port, take it apart, and solder the new one in. Lol. Yeah, right. Plus, that's about a $40 solution since I don't have soldering equipment sitting around. I struggled between buying an Ipad or a Kindle. I have $50 worth of Itunes credit. I have had it for 5 or 6 years. My sister gave me most of it when I got the Ipad. My music is on Amazon. I have Prime for videos. The Ipad supports the Kindle app, but it is 2X the price. The Kindle I wanted was $99 today instead of $149. I hope I made the right decision. I still remember Betamax vs. VHS.

I only spent about $20 today, been working in the house, had to go and pick up DD after her
monthly social activity, so nothing else. I bought dad and I dinner from Burger King, thought I
had a meeting and it was next week but I got out of cooking dinner at least. DD had dinner with
her behavior management person before the activity.

I am not an Apple user but can't you buy something and download it on your desktop and just transfer as needed?

I went with a friend to Armadillo Willie's today. How does that save money you may ask? Well, I felt like stopping for a brisket sandwich at Costco tonight. The sandwich itself would have been cheaper but I rarely get out of there without spending at least $100, so I am claiming a $90 win

I mean, you can download Itunes to the desktop and play stuff through that. It's just awkward to have stuff in two formats. I am actually planning to write a snail-mail letter to Apple and explain my dilemma with the App Store credit. Maybe they will have "pity" on me, and maybe they won't. It honestly never hurts to ask. The worst they can say is no.

You can get a lot of apps on the Kindle.
I have iTunes on my computer and an iPhone, so I buy music. I have also bought a couple of books on iBooks that were not on Amazon.
My iPad2 finally stopped working this winter. It was so big and bulky compared to the current iPads.

I was at the UPS storefront and while I was there returning some items I ordered, in a matter of minutes 2 different people came in returning their dish boxes. The guy was telling them save their receipts as Dish is terrible and will come back a year later and say they weren't returned. Mine is supposed to be frozen for 2 years, I bet it isn't. If not we may pay the penalty and opt out. Enough is enough. I got about $30 off on it and $11 off on our phone bill, not much but helps. Soon as hubs gets electric wired in his garage, we have a huge LED light to put up and getting rid of the rented one from the light company that is almost $30 a month. As the guy at UPS says wait until the first of July when net neutrality is thrown out the window, the prices will go nuts. At some point we will likely just cancel it all.

DH can't get his baseball team without cable. None of the streaming services carry the channels they normally play. Apparently a handful of teams are like that. We have a two year contract.
I am making copies of the receipt where we returned the equipment to DirecTV. And I'm scanning it.

Yes, I was assured that the 2 year price will be adhered too, do I believe it no. The thing always creeps back up again,
its really aggravating. Greed is going to do them in over time as even for us in the middle of nowhere some viable alternative
that is easy to use will finally appear.

We have satellite and cable. Lol. The satellite is Directv. Quite honestly, they have been reasonably generous over the past 14 years. They've given me upgrades for free as well as tons of price reductions. For four tvs, we currently pay $100 a month for everything but premium channels and including the repair service. They run enough free premium weekends to please DH. The few times they have given us 90-days free he couldn't find anything worth watching. I have no complaints. We pay $60 for a cable landline and internet. We have to have the landline for DH's medical equipment. That's about $30 - $40 without long distance with BellSouth. They have no contract and reset it to the promotional price every summer. Again, I have no complaints. It is true that $160 a month is probably a lot for these services, but DH is retired. He watches a lot of tv. He has a hard time switching over to the DVD player. He is 75 years old, and his skill set isn't what it used to be. It is important to me that his television be seamless. Different strokes for different folks. Meanwhile, we pay $25 a month for cellphone service for two phones. It all works out the same in the end.

The one thing I didn't do today to save money was to stay home: I'm spending the weekend in Fairbanks, Alaska, with a friend who's got a play in a festival up here. We've been doing this for years, splitting the expense of the hotel room and gasoline. It's important to me to be able to share this with her, so I budget for it.
That said....She is at the festival this evening (I went yesterday), so my dinner came from the supermarket: a freshly baked roll eaten with one slice of ham and two slices of Muenster cheese from the deli department. (They gave me mustard packets for free.) I had some iced tea, which I made in the hotel room (it's got a full kitchen) and some dried mangoes that I brought from home.
Sorry to have been away from the boards for so long.
