Just don't go visit Mt. Washington in N.H. tonight....might be -100 with wind chill....actual temp -26 & have had wind gusts up to 122mph. There are a few scientists up there at an observatory!
Coldest spot in the lower 48!

Coldest spot in the lower 48! A friend of mine from high school who then went on to become a scientist spent a winter atop Mt. Washington in the observatory. She said the weather was brutal at times. You cannot do it during the winter, but have you ever driven to the top of Mt. Washington during the summer months? Not a drive I liked doing because there are no guard rails and the two lane road doesn't offer a lot of wiggle room.

Alligators and Crocs know how to survive. Today has temps above freezing. May the melting begin!

The ice melted on top of snow which helped when we shoveled the sidewalk. Today it is in the low 30s and tomorrow will be close to 60. I'll take whatever warmth the weather has to give us.

Possible the pythons and such in the everglades will succumb as they did a few years ago ...there are thousands there...disrupting the natural balance of the place...not native to...few if any predators...released by folks tired of them as pets or just got to big and out of hand...

During the cold spell here which lasted about 8 days, and just to be safe, I ran my in-house water faucets so the pipes would not freeze.
I received a notice in the mail today from my utilities company stating they noticed my water consumption had gone up during the past week and was much higher than previous years during this same time period. They stated I might want to check and see if I had a running toilet or something similar.
I like the idea of my utility company giving me a heads up if they notice unusual/higher than historical usage for the same date range.

I remember long ago that the power company reported higher than normal use and the DEA swooped down on the homeowner who happened to be growing pot (illegal there)

We are getting whooped again, white outs on the highways and it's just a flipping mess. The drive times have increased from 8 minutes on the highways to over 50 minutes now.

I would not want to drive on the roads tonight. We've had sleet and freezing rain from 3:30 until 6 PM when the snow started, and the wind chill will be -11.

Jag & Dee, where is your general location?
We had a high of 66º today, but are down to 48º right now & headed into the 30's for tonight & the 20' tomorrow night. I've put the floating row cover back over my radishes, cabbages, lettuces & carrots...AGAIN. My cabbages are starting to make small heads. Tenn., did you get any of the snow? I have a gal friend in southern central Tenn. and after dire predictions, it all missed them.
ETA...and our wind has picked up, 10-15 mph coming out of the due north!

kadee79, I'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I just put more garbage out and it's so icy, brutal cold winds. It's currently -20c/-4f with the windchill. The tenants have already been out and dug out my front walkway, but it's so ice encrusted snow that's on top and hard to move. UGH, UGH, UGH!

After a good portion of last night with heavy rain, the cold front came through. Then about five hours worth sleet and followed by about 3 hours of snow. In total, about two inches of snow and sleet, mostly sleet. Because the dog houses in the back yard which house some cats are on the backyard patio, I actually had to shovel snow off the patio so I could put food out for them and I didn't want to slip and break a leg/hip/arm/head. Roads are a mess as we don't have plows and only the major thoroughfares are sanded and even this it is mostly the bridge overpasses. Secondary roads and side streets just have to wait for the ice and snow to melt.

Four day weekend for city and county kids: no school today due to weather and Martin Luther King Day Monday. And students just returned from Christmas break this past Monday.

I looked towards the window and it was just starting to come down. DAMN!

Roller coaster weather - we had the extreme cold and lots of snow, then hit 60s on Thursday and early Friday, back down to single digits and a replacement coat of 10" of snow. School didn't close this week, but they cancelled after school activities Friday due to the switchover from rain to ice to snow in the afternoon. No basketball game for you, DS5. Shoveled out this morning, to get him to a morning game, no one there - guess Friday's cancel carried over to Saturday (robocall only mentioned Friday, and no cancellation on the morning news, though, so ). I had to get to work anyways, and it was not dead like you'd think... The quick melt and rain had lots of people near creeks with flooded basements. The utility companies were shutting their gas off, just as temps took a nose dive. Not pretty. A couple of idiots took a canoe out on a creek hunting, and capsized. Way to put rescuers at risk, guys.

TP, some folks can be soooo stupid. I used to live in central Ill., so I know about ice storms, sleet & PILES of snow. One year there were snowmobiles going like crazy across what they thought was an open farm field...well, there was a hot wire to keep the cattle in...it decapitated one of the guys. And then there were the ones who decided to ride down the frozen river, only is wasn't frozen in all parts of it...sunk. And the snowmobilers who came flying up a hill by our house, didn't realize that the old Model T garage that sat almost on the road had created a swirl in the snow & there was a hole about 4-5' deep there...buried one of them in the other side of the hole & the other guys stopped quick enough to only have his SM tottering on the edge.
Tenn. & Jag, ya'al be really, really careful with that ice. I've been on my butt before with it & it ain't fun!...and I'm too old to be doing that now, I'd break something for sure. Keep that countdown going Jag!
We are currently at 33º but will be down into the 20's before morning....and for the next several nights.

Keep that countdown going Jag! We are currently at 33º but will be down into the 20's before morning....and for the next several nights. The following doesn't involve a snowmobile but an ATV. Reminds me of a young man maybe around the age of 15 when I saw him. But the summer of my junior-senior high school year, I worked at a golf course snack bar. A man came in with his two sons. the 15-year-old son had scars all over his face and exposed arms. I later asked one of the country club members what had happened to the young man. He told me the young man had been operating an ATV at dusk and drove right into a multi-strand, barbed wire fence. Tangled him all up and ripped the kid up something fierce. Felt bad for the kid. Snow is slowly melting but we get hit with another cold spell come Monday night. The low for Wednesday morning is supposed to be 2 degrees. Have not experienced that low a temperature since I lived in New England. Normal (average) low this time of year is 32 degrees. So this is way low for around here. And to think, this past Thursday morning's low was 62 degrees.
