really hoping to keep this one out of Religious Discussion.....this is about enabling child predators. some links for you: Pope Francis to participate in funeral for Bernard Cardinal LawGlobe Metro: Kevin Cullen - Bernard Law should be remembered for what he was - an enabler of abuseBernard Cardinal Law, disgraced former Cardinal of the Archdiocese of Boston, has died in Rome at the age of 86. As explained in the 2nd link, Law assisted in relocating "problem priests" to other dioceses around the country without notifying the destinations as to the reasons why relocation was needed. this allowed many priests to re-offend. The Boston Archdiocese was highlighted in the recent movie "Spotlight" based on the coverage of the Boston Globe investigative team, the coverage which blew the nationwide scandal wide open. as I said on FB when I posted the first link this morning, Cardinal O'Malley, Law's immediate successor, has spent countless hours working to help abuse victims and try to make amends for what the Catholic church allowed to happen. for that, he is to be respected, I believe. I also believe that anyone who had left the church during the child abuse uncovering that might have been on the verge of coming back has just been lost for good. to give Law a full Vatican funeral and burial is a slap in the face to the survivors of the abuse allowed by Law and others.

I can't bring myself to watch that movie, but I remember reading all of the Globe columns as they came out. this is the Archdiocese I was raised in, and all of this (how it was NOT handled) is a significant part of why I left the church. the other stuff I have talked about on these boards was confirmation of everything.
just so disgusted by the response of the Vatican here.

What little comfort it might offer to the victims and their families, maybe Law had the opportunity to confess his sins prior to his passing.

A disappointing slap in the face to those who were victims. Those who represent Christianity can do better.

Not being of the faith, but respecting the over all premise of it and the great majority of it's faithful..never understood how those in leadership positions , and assuming not consumed by the same sickness of the perpetrators...seemed to condone the actions, covered them up, spent the hard earned treasure to payoff the victims and accusers if they remained quiet and then , as in this case, seem to reward the perpetrators in the end..Why? Possible the fault lies in the fact that leadership is vested only in those who are male and those who are ordained..civilians really are advisors only, cash cow when needed but as far as real influence, not much beyond for a few, given the right to privately speak their thoughts and then to forever more, be quiet. The thought being...better to lose members..even the demise of the organization before control of the ship is shared or even changed...basically better ship sinks taking every one with it if needed. Remember...not a believer, just interested observer...

I am sure he did...but that confession is for his own soul and inner peace...the organization itself he was a key member of did not owe him honors..beyond allowing him to be buried in sanctioned ground.

I can only hope so for those that still follow the teachings of this church after their loved ones were so victimized by it. for everyone else, I can't see how that would help.

Chiver and dezii-I understand. Cardinal Law caused much damage to the victims and to the Catholic church. There is no peace for the victims with his death. Hopefully the Catholic church will go forward making sure this never happens again.

Simple burial with basic religious service in a sanctified location would have been enough...simple basic public notice would have taken care of victims and victims families feelings...again IMHO.

I don't know why but this doesn't surprise me one bit - full honor burial and all.

The church cares that they were caught. Not that they were wrong in covering it up.
I have ties to the church and lots of good memories from it, but nothing they've done since the abuse has come out can convince me there is any true remorse.

Again...and again too, it is not my faith so just as a interested observer...if females had more of a role and influence in the institution...does one believe this negative stain on the organization would have been allowed to go on as long and as deep as it has...just a thought.
