My 2006 Mustang's odometer just rolled over to 20,000 miles ~ which isn't too bad for a 5-year-old car. My wonderful DH's 2002 Explorer has 80,000 miles ~ and I think that might be about average for a 9-year-old vehicle.
This got me wondering ... what's the age of your car and the mileage?
Is there a certain # of miles after which you think you're driving on "borrowed time" and it's just a matter of time until a newer vehicle will be needed?

My 2007 has over 17,000 miles I think it might be over 17,500 since I took a trip yesterday.

170,000 miles on my 96 honda civic. I think...hope....we can get a few more years out of it, but hope to be able to get a newer car in the next year or so.

Our 2003 Tundra has 90,000 miles on it. My 2000 RAV4 has 144,000 miles. DH and I were just talking about what to do when it dies. We're thinking about replacing the engine when the time comes -rather than replacing the car. Haven't yet decided what we'll do. Maybe we'll get another 60K to 80K before that happens.

123,170 on my 2003 Windstar. My 96 Windstar we gave away to a family member at just over 100,000 miles figuring it was on bonus miles. It is still going, albeit barely running at about 190,000 miles. I figure the 2003 can give me another one or two decent years. We did replace the tranny for about $2,000 in fall. It is still a really nice car if all I have to put into in the next year or two is the $2,000.
I am trying to decide what to replace it with. This is my third van, and it is hard to see myself driving a car. I live a 2008 or 2009 redline Saturn vue, but I saw I can only expect about 15mpg. The van averages 19mpg and I am not willing to go backwards. Thinking that in two years I will consider an Equinox or like car I expect to get 30-40 mpg. I also like the Ford Taurus or Fusion or Edge. I only have 2 kids one will be a Senior Next year and the other a Freshie so a 4 or 5 passenger vehicle should be adequate.

2004 with 47,000 miles
It's had all sorts of interesting problems already so I have no idea how long it will last.

I think the national average is around 12K/yr. I usually put 13-15K a year on my car, as I commute 18 miles one way AND have to use my own vehicle for work travel daily. I have a 2006 Toyota, bought 1 year ago, had close to 69K on it and now it's around 82K. I really hope to get another 82K out of it, at least!

2006 Corolla with slightly less than 50,000 miles on it. I've been watching the mileage because it has to go in for a 50,000 mile servicing when it rolls over.
The amazing thing to me is that I just bought tires last week, and I'm still on my first battery. The only problem I've ever had with this car was a "check engine" light that turned out to be the computer malfunctioning. They replaced that "under warranty" even though it had 42,000 miles at the time.

My 2007 Subaru Forester has about 32K miles. I bought it new and have put every single mile on the odometer. My test drive of it took the odometer off of 0.

My car is 6 months old and just hit 1800 miles. I work about 4 miles from home. Still, I think I need a life!

89 Wrangler (the odometer says 240K, but the engine is a baby - only has about 5K miles). It seems pretty sturdy and DH enjoys tinkering with it so it should hopefully last quite a while.
93 Honda Del Sol - 210,000 miles, about 30,000 on the current engine. I think it has a lot of life left, very fun to drive.
97 Honda Civic - 191,000 miles, still has the original engine but we put a new transmission in about 20,000 miles ago. I think it is due for a couple mid-three-figure repairs, but also hope to get another few years out of it.
If we were spending more than $200 a month on maintenance for any of the cars, I'd skip the trips to the repair shop and invest in a newer vehicle - but they have all been pretty good to us, and it's great not having a car payment. (Plus since none of them book for more than $4K, our insurance is dirt-cheap!) Of course, now that I've posted this, one of the vehicles will break down within a week - guaranteed ;D

I don't understand where this 12,000 miles per year average comes from. Maybe it's because we live in the Pacific NW and everything is so much more spread out here, but I've never seen only 12,000 miles per year.

2005 with 130,000 km. That converts to almost 81,000 m. My commute to work is very short. I put the miles on taking road trips.

Forgot hubby's cars 2001/60,000 Ford Focus 1989/210,000 Ford F-150 So far our repairs were a timing belt and new catalytic converter on the Odyssey, the Focus had none, the F-150 has a new gas tank and electrical system. The rest was just brakes, tires, batteries, and oil changes.

2009 Subaru Impreza 69k Actually its at 69,700 something. I was just looking at mileage today bc apparently I need brakes at my next oil change. It had less than 100 miles on it when I bought it new. Unless something crazy happens, this will be my first year owning it where I don't rack up 30k miles in a year.
Not sure how long I will keep it. I don't love the acceleration when merging onto highway and I had an oil change go awry and oil plug came out along with oil while I was driving at 70mph.

My last car I averaged 10k a year but those were college years. With my new car I've had various commutes that put ~500 miles/week on my car.

1999 Honda Civic with 123,400-something. I bought it in 2003 from my stepmom when her Mom died (car had 10,500 miles when I bought it). I've been taking mass transit to work since June 2009, so I really only drive it on the weekends and trips.

1994 Honda Civic with 112,000 on it. Most of those came during the first 5 years when I was commuting to work. Since I've retired, there were years I didn't put 3,000 miles on it.
Major repair has been a $1500 transmission last fall. Everything else has been in the book as required maintenance. When I got the new transmission, the Honda repair department manager said it should be good for another 100,000 miles.
I am saving now for a down payment for a new car. I will keep this one until it dies.

2002 Subaru WRX with about 115,000 miles on it. I get somewhere in the low 20s around town.
ETA. When I bought it I talked to the local Subaru shop I deal with (not a dealer) and they said they see a lot of these with 200,000 miles or more on it. I don't drive constantly with the turbo operating and so far, they said the car is in great shape.
I washed it finally today and it looks great. It's a sharp looking car. Except for the giant rear spoiler (aka the STi) the previous owner stuck on it.

2004 Mazda 3 with ~91k miles.
I put a crapload of miles on it when I was commuting 120 miles a day for about six months. (I have an 80-mile round trip commute now, but now take a vanpool which helps.)
