holy crap, what a day! after driving home from a friend's, where I'd crashed after a wine tasting - none of us were in any condition to drive anywhere - I set about to make a pot of soup for this week's lunch. I had just turned down the heat to simmer, and popped online here to catch up, when I heard this big crash out on my back patio. I opened the blinds to investigate, and see this big bald dude I'd never seen before, hanging off the fence that separates my back patio from the wetlands interior to my condo complex. the crash had been the idiot crushing the plastic box on my patio (gardening tool storage) as his step-up to hopping the fence. I initially thought he was trying to climb *up* the fence onto the patio, rather than the other way around. I watched him run through the wetlands and run off through the complex until I couldn't see him anymore. I ran inside and called the cops, who immediately sent 3 cruisers to try and find this guy. they took statements from me, as well as a couple of my neighbors who also saw the guy, and poked around the grounds a little bit. I came in the house and called my dad, who lives a couple towns over, to see if he wanted to come by and hang out for the afternoon. I live alone, and was a little rattled. after I got off the phone with dad, I noticed the cop that took my statement was walking around just across the wetlands from my condo. I went outside to see what was up, and he told me that they caught the guy a few streets over. he started asking questions, so I drove around the complex rather than continued to yell from my patio. apparently, the clothes my neighbors and I had described were different than what he was wearing when they caught him. I guess he was pitching layers as he ran. apparently, he had stolen some stuff from the grocery store across the main road, and had cut through my complex and the apt complex next to us trying to get away. the officers were trying to retrace his steps to find the layers he'd tossed. so now, I'm back in the house. all the doors/windows are locked. I've got the blinds at ground level wide open so I can watch the world go by. I just finished a big steaming mug of the soup I started simmering before all the drama, and it paired nicely with a big glass of nero d'avola. I hope all of you are enjoying your Sundays, and that you're not dealing with anything like my day.

That is scary. I have never had nero d'avola. Is it a red or a white? I guess I could go google it.

thanks. I'm still a little rattled, even knowing they caught the guy. I keep one of those huge maglites (the ones that take 4-D batteries) in my car, it's now sitting on the floor next to the overstuffed chair where I'm camped out - in full view of the sliding glass door to my patio. between this and the idiot that lives next door, this is definitely not the place I moved into 5 years ago. if I had to run across to the grocery store (yes, the one today's genius robbed) for something quick, half the time I didn't even close my slider! that changed about a year and a half ago, when the next-door neighbor moved in. I'm trying to reassure myself that this is the only thing that's happened in 5 years, so it's OK to open the doors/windows when I'm home and it's nice out. a few days to digest this will probably help. I do appreciate the Angel, nero is a smooth Sicilian red. I'd picked up a case for the holidays (I host both T-day and xmas) and have a couple bottles left.

And please let it be available at Kroger. Hey maybe some wine would help me with my homework.

This next weekend I plan on driving down to the D to Cost Plus at the Eastern Market and stocking up on some of my favorite wines. I LOVE that store.

We have a big wine store near me I think they advertise 800 kinds of wine. The only good things I've got there are a Riesling I randomly picked when you said Riesling would go good with my chicken salad and the layer cake malbec. Everything else you've mentioned I have to get at Kroger when I am in WV.

Chiver glad they caught him. Did he destroy any of your property with his fence antics?
There are wackos everywhere. I wouldn't worry unless you see someone else near your fence or running through in the near future.

I had a maglite and I used it so little I didn't notice the batteries corroded in it. My brother destroyed the cap getting it off. Those are replaceable but I think my dad threw it out. My stepmom always took one of those maglites with the D batteries when she showed real estate. I've been using one I got for free with coupon after Halloween at Kroger one year. I have two of them. I'll replace the maglite someday. I think if I made a complete list of things I want for the apt it'd be depressing how long and spendy the list is.

I actually bought it for the ass that moved into the unit next to me about a year and a half ago. he likes to blast music/movies loud enough to shake things off my wall. I figured it might come in handy when I started complaining to the board about him (and he got fined...). when I rang his doorbell like a rational adult and asked him to knock it off, he told me, rather colorfully, what to go do to myself. I specifically picked it for the heft and balance of that weight. ladies, my nero is a Duca Di Camastra. I found a link that has a pic of the label I have, so you know what to look for.

Well, I always think you should try to resolve this rationally and then proceed to other options like the board when that doesn't work.

Optimist, thanks. that's exactly what I need to hear tonight. the only thing damaged was a cheap plastic patio storage box that I'd picked up at a Christmas Tree Shop a few years back. he used it as a booster to launch himself over the fence, and the cover caved in from the weight. it probably was weakened from the snow piles over the winter, but like I said, very cheap. I kept gardening tools and my chimney starter (for the charcoal grill I don't have anymore) inside.

Well, I always think you should try to resolve this rationally and then proceed to other options like the board when that doesn't work. funny, that's what the police said when I asked them to run his name for a sanity check after the quoted exchange. the older officer came out to the lobby where I was, folded his arms, and said "we appreciate that you made the effort, but please just call us next time." um... I have no clue what was in his record, they couldn't tell me, but I bought the maglite that night. I distinctly remember standing in Home Depot and consciously choosing the black casing over the silver, so if it came to it, he wouldn't see it coming in the dark.

Chiver thanks for the link. I have bookmarked it so I can check to see if Cost Plus has it.
I may not like my neighbors, but none of them are dangerous or insane. They all pretty much leave me alone and I leave them alone.

Angel and TD - where is TD's recipe for his Bloody Mary? I want to make one and I can't find it. This thread is about wine, so I figured I'd find you here. Chiver - I hope things calm down soon in your area and people start acting human again. (((Hugs)))

Angel, everyone else is pretty normal. in fact, the people that used to live next to me are horrified that this is who they ended up selling their place to (we're FB friends). IMHO, if you can't live respectfully of the people around you, then you really shouldn't be living in an adjoining space. if you do end up finding my wine, I hope you like it.

Well based on what I have read about the wine, it does sound like something I will like.

Go figure the county I used to live in has Red Bicyclette and Cupcake wines advertised on their sales fliers. I think I need to go have dinner with my brother this week. And perhaps DB will do the wine shopping for me since he's by the stores all the time.
