[br It does not taint the water supply. It kills off the bacteria used in the wastewater treatment process. Making it harder for WWTP operators to meet the effluent levels they are required to meet. But they still had to meet them or risk a fine. Narcotics kill off bacteria or are you talking about antibiotics. I have heard that antibiotics are an issue in wastewater treatment, not narcotics though. Antibiotics. Sorry. The point being that taint the water supply is a really bad way to put it unless you are saying your drinking water comes directly downstream from WWTP (which in some places the WWTP effluent is cleaner than the source water for drinking water). Or you are saying you are drinking your sewage?

Wow, after DH died I just threw all his meds into the trash. There were definitely a lot of pain killers he filled just in case and rarely used. Uh oh. I believe that the way to discard narcotics (if there is no bring back facilities) is to mix them with used kitty litter. I think dog poop bags would probably serve the same purpose.

They recommend mixing with coffee grinds or kitty litter and throwing in the trash. Something to make the pills not so visible and not very attractive for someone to dig through.
And finally the FDA does maintain a list of narcotics for which they recommend flushing because the potential for harm to someone it isn't prescribed for is so great even from a single dose. Now yes, conventional wisdom these days says not to but these are powerful drugs. Ideally you could find a place to take them back but life isn't always ideal. I'd rather someone flush it then it end up on the street.

I crushed the vicodin last night and put it with the cat litter. No more opiods in my house. The pharmacy recommended what I did as a safe disposal.
