My diamond fell out - probably at the grocery store. Gone forever. I'm having a moral dilemma. I do love how pretty diamonds are, but bothered by the industry. I am considering seeing if I could find a used diamond, or maybe finding a different gem. Anyone know of a trustworthy place to buy a used diamonds? And...go get your prongs checked on your rings.

Oh, that's a shame, thyme. It's an awful feeling to lose something like that. Maybe you could find an old ring with a suitable stone at an antique store or a consignment shop. It is often possible to find nice stones in a setting that is no longer fashionable. You could choose a different precious stone if it would suit the setting of your ring. Maybe a nice ruby, emerald, or sapphire would look nice in the empty space.

There is really no jewel industry that doesn't have a horrible history of exploitation attached to it. You just have to pick the one you can live with.
If it doesn't need to be an actual jewel they have cubic zurconia that is so well crafted that even professionals can't tell the difference between it and a real diamond. Cheaper and no moral quandary attached to it.

I like the idea of cubic zirconia. Emeralds are brittle- not good for a ring.
When I was planning my wedding and looking at everyone's engagement rings on theknot.com, the ones I really loved had color stones in the center. I ended up with an imperial topaz, which is pink. Bonus, although I know you don't want to think about this: now that DH is gone I can still wear it and it's not an obvious engagement ring. (I wear our wedding bands on a platinum chain around my neck.)

my engagement ring is a 1/3 carot diamond with a pink sapphire on either side. I got lots of compliments on it. If I ever manage to somehow land a guy who's not crazy or scary and can deal with my crazy and we are BOTH crazy enough to get engaged/married, I'd opt for a main stone that isn't a diamond. A princess cut pink sapphire or black diamond against a platinum/white gold band would be gorgeous IMO.

I had a diamond engagement ring and plain wedding band. I wore them for the first 15 or so years of marriage. I had to take them off during pregnancy when they got too tight (yes, the best time for people to think you are not married).
The diamond fell out of the engagement ring twice while I was taking wet clothes out of the washer. One time it fell into one of the basket holes into the bottom. I had to call appliance repair to get it out. "What is the problem with your clothes washer? Well I diamond fell into the bottom of it." No repair code for that one. I did get it back. 2nd time was just on top of the clothes thanfully. I stopped wearing after that.
Rings are now too small, and I haven't bother getting them resized. I am not allowed to wear them in the manufacturing areas at work (no makeup either), and it is a PITA to take them on and off, plus could easily lose them.

Have you considered your birth stone? I've seen beautiful engagement rings with pearls.
CZs are a good idea also ....... you can get the color you want.

I'm kinda liking the idea of getting a sapphire. Hmmmm Diamonds are highly over rated. If you or your husband have a birth stone you are attracted to, go with the birth stone.

If you still want the look, brightness and sparkle of a diamond, consider moissanite.

Check with your homeowner's insurance. That happened to my wife, our insurance company ordered a diamond and paid to have it installed.

If you're looking into replacing your diamond with a different stone, you might look into created stones. My wedding ring has a princess cut sapphire from Chatham. It's lab grown, so it's the same sapphire material as always, but not mined. Picking it out was fun, they sent over two stones and while we liked one of them, we were hoping for a lighter, more purple color. The next batch had one that was somewhere close to a tanzanite that we loved. Bonus points for being about 1/10th the cost of a natural sapphire that we looked at, plus it was cut better.

I know the OP already has a setting but for those of you who may invest in a good ring in the future- get platinum, which is far more durable. The stones are less likely to fall out due to prongs wearing or bending. My engagement ring and the two rings I've had made over the years are all platinum. So is the chain with the bands from my wedding to DH, for the same reason.

I agree, would never buy a diamond again. I lost my wedding ring a long time ago and haven't replaced it yet. I think gem stones or birthstones are more interesting and personal than a diamond. I wonder if diamonds will soon be totally out of style....I don't see many young people caring about or wanting to spend the kind of money on a flashy ring....and all the moral issues surrounding them almost makes them tacky. But I really could not care less about jewelry.

Air bag flipped my hand into the windshield. Busted the windshield and bent one of the prongs on my ring. Platinum setting. Shipped it back to Blue Nile and they fixed it for free. They will clean it and check the prongs at least once a year for free.
It's also insured with USAA under a jewelry rider on the homeowner's policy. They would have paid to fix it as well.

I love sapphires, and my ring from the ex has a center diamond with two sapphires on each side which I put away for YDS. My current ring from DH has an emerald cut Tanzanite in the center with small diamonds surrounding it. Although I love it, it is not practical to wear every day since it is too big. I should have it sized again.
Another reminder: If you have a pearl necklace, make sure the jeweler checks the thread because it becomes fragile with age.

And this is why DH had 2 extra prongs put on my ring when we bought it. He figured something like this would happen to me since it happened with a different ring. I just have a 3/4 karat solitaire with 6 prongs in a platinum setting. I am also wearing my mother's diamond which looks to be 1/2 karat solitaire with 2 little side diamonds in maybe a platinum setting. I should get it checked.
I think her engagement ring was an aquamarine. I know my dad had it in his box until I took it. My birthstone, my ring!!!
We have an insurance rider for my diamond since I am a known klutz.

You can get a created diamond, and not a cz this is an actual man made diamond done in a chamber under a lot of pressure and heat.

Not a pearl necklace but a piece of Southwest jewelry. Back in the early 70s, my sister was living in N.M. She had a green serpentine beaded necklace made for me. I wore it all the time. Fast forward a few years and I was on a train heading to Copenhagen from Florence, Italy. A train attendant noticed the necklace and asked if he could buy it from me. I said no. A few hours later, and while still on the train, the string broke and the beads scattered all over the train car. I should have sold the guy the necklace.

Lab created diamonds are cheaper.
Not that it's even close to happening, but I can't settle on a colored stone that I'd like to wear all the time. Plus there's a part of me that sees me smashing my ring into a table or something and at least a diamond won't shatter.

Lab created stones are a great idea.
My engagement ring is a 2.6 karat rose de France amethyst, which is a pretty way of saying a lavender/lilac stone, with a rose gold band. It's so pretty, I love it! One of the great things about a pale gemstone is you can go large and it's not gaudy.

If I were to ever get married again (and I cannot see that happening!) I have to admit that I'm a diamond girl. I just love the look. That said, I am not against a created stone if it looks as good as a real diamond.

I'm sorry about your ring, that has to be gut-wrenching. My mom once lost hers at my brother's baseball game. She and my dad were long divorced, but her wedding diamond was from her deceased mom's engagement ring, so there was a lot of emotional attachment. Luckily she noticed it was gone after a couple of minutes and her eagle-eyed friend spotted it on one of the foot sections of the bleachers a few feet away. Turns out 3 of her 6 prongs were bent or broken, so she's lucky it fell out while she was sitting in one spot... That experience, along with my general cheapness and situational poverty, led me to pick out a CZ in a simple setting (14K white gold) instead of an actual diamond. It cost around $125, which means it still clocks in as my most expensive piece of jewelry (what can I say, I'm really not a jewelry person) and I've gotten a lot of compliments on it over the years. I intended to swap the stone out for a diamond at some point, but 11 years later, it's still close to the very bottom of my list of "things I feel like spending $3K on," so I doubt it'll happen. I told DH that when he dies I'll have him cremated into a diamond and wear that instead.
