I don't even want to start another hurricane thread, but Maria is already up to a Category 5. We'll want to keep track of her path as the week goes on. I can't recall so many large hurricanes in such a short period of time. Maybe we should ask our experts in Texas & Florida how unusual this is?

Not very. The last time we had three in a row was 2004. I don't remember any others.

We've had a lull in the last decade or so. Makes a lot of people forget about past active times. Like that year we ran out of names!
It's not totally unusual to get a cat 5, what's more unusual is that it stays it for any length of time.

I believe the number of hurricanes is staying fairly constant. It's the intensity that's ramped up. Bigly. The oceans are warmer, which means more water evaporating into the atmosphere. That leads to bigger hurricanes with much more rain. Evidently, it's the new normal.

It looks like the Virgin Islands, British and U.S., are going to get clobbered again.

I think all the rescue cruise ships have already offloaded refugees at PR to fly out with a small number continuing on to Florida. So hopefully those without safe places after irma are long gone.

But don't try and sing the song as 'Mar-ee-a'. In the song about the wind, it's pronounced 'Mar-eye-ah' as in Mariah Carey.

Puerto Rico looks like it's in direct line of Maria. I was under the impression that PR was being used for staging for Irma relief efforts due to mostly intact infrastructure.

I've been watching the Weather Channel, between the Caribbean hits and trying to figure out what to expect of what's left of Jose when it hits Cape Cod tomorrow. I think Maria has been downgraded and re-strengthened a couple of times between Category 4 and 5, no? something about the eye being so much more concentrated and strong than what is normally seen.

I think I heard one meteorologist this morning call the eye a 'pin-prick'eye. The eye was so small, maybe ten miles across, which indicated a very intense storm.

It takes a lot of strength to remain a high category. I think irma just took the top spot, but then there's only two that lasted 3 and the next all lasted under 2. It's usually pretty normal for hurricanes to go up and down as the interact with land, various water temps, and other weather systems.
